Golf Club At South Hampton
About
The Golf Club at South Hampton was designed to give every golfer appropriate risk-and-reward opportunities that supply both encouragement to beginners and challenges for more advanced players. The slope and contour of the course’s landscape is its trademark with strategic mounding and over 60 contoured bunkers that emphasize the terrain’s natural undulations. The course features rolling fairways and massive greens. There are also sixteen large lakes that come into play throughout. The signature hole is the tremendous par-5, 17th, which is a scenic hole that features a lake, fairway bunkers, and a breaking green. Although the course is a challenge, there are six sets of tees to accommodate all skill levels.

South Hampton is always a great track
It's been a while since I played here last. I wasn't disappointed after hearing the course was not in good conditions a few months back. To my surprise and excitement, it was just as good as you'd expect this time of year in north east Florida. The Greens were good on most of the holes, and definitely need a bit more growth, however, they were true and slightly faster than the average 8 - 9 you expect from a public course. I've played at SH many, many times over the years, and I just love the layout and challenges it offers.
This course is worth playing
Made very welcome by both staff and players on the course and in the clubhouse. I rented a set of ladies clubs which were practically brand new and reasonably priced to rent. The fairways were in very good condition. We were made aware by the pro shop and the starter that the greens had recently been diseased but were getting better. They were not as bad as what we were expecting having been told this. The tees are not numbered however as we stuck to the path with the buggy they were easily found. Good practice facilities available before you play. I would recommend playing this course if you are in the area.
Poor greens, no rangers, slower than...
My fault for trying to play on a holiday weekend I guess. Every out of town guest who only plays once a year wanted to get in a round while visiting relatives in Florida, I suppose. Spent an hour playing the first 3 holes behind a group that included some guy in jeans and a t-shirt who took 3-4 practice swing every shot to chunk or top it 50 yards if he was lucky and the rest of the group wasn't much better and all equally as slow. We skipped the 4th hole to get past them and didn't catch another group until 11, that's how bad it was. Never saw a ranger or employee once. I gave up at 11 seeing nothing but slow foursomes ahead. Greens are spray painted green but I've rolled better putts on carpet compared to most of them. Rest of the course in good enough condition for the season, but the greens are NOT back yet.
Need new greens
Greens were splotchy but rolled fairly true. I played with a member who informed me that new greens would be coming sometime in the next two years.
One of my favorite courses
Had a pretty good round until 2 holes on front nine and 2 holes on back 9.
Nice Layout
Played behind a shotgun start event, so had whole course to ourselves. Good course conditions, beautiful weather, wonderful outing. The house salad in the bar/restaurant was excellent as well.
Not a good value
The greens continue to struggle, though they have improved. 1st green had been sanded and was all scuffed up from the machinery. A few other greens still had patches of mold or whatever they've been having problems with for the last 2 years. This course is greatly overpriced in my opinion for the condition of the course and the staff in the pro shop is hardly ever friendly. Fees listed in my review included a small bucket of balls (not part of greens fees).
Greens are beginning to improve
With the exception of a few greens, the course conditions are pretty good. The greens are not totally ruined; there are areas on a few greens that have damage. The course appears to be making efforts to get them back
Getting better
The course is shaping up nicely. The greens are much better and roll true. A little slow but not bad. Will play again here soon.
World Golf Village Stay & Play Package
Thank you very much for coming to visit us this past Wednesday. We are sorry that you did not have a good experience. On Wednesday morning our maintenance team performed a routine procedure of spiking and topdressing the turf canopy. Our superintendent discovered an issue with the process as you referenced on the first green and immediately changed what they were doing. Unfortunately they were not able to roll the greens until later in the morning to help with this problem. This procedure is completed about every 10 days during the winter months to keep the turf canopy open and improve both air flow and drainage through the thatch layer. In the summer time this procedure is completed as well, but it typically is a verticut and topdress. These procedures are supposed to have limited or no impact to play, but obviously with an equipment issue, it can have an impact as you noticed on the first hole. With regards to the rest of the course, we do not have a mold issue. All of our issues are rectified at this time, the few greens we had issues with the most over the summer months still have perimeter spots that are recovering, but have limited or no impact to normal play. The issues were limited to the past 6 months and we look forward to continuing to better our conditions as we work with different consultants going forward and have changed several chemical and fertilizer programs. There has been a vast improvement in the last few months since our unfortunate incident involving Bermuda Grass Mites which is extremely rare to hybrid or ultra dwarf Bermuda Grass. We invite you to stay tuned to our Facebook page as we continue to post updated pictures of course conditions and look forward to seeing again soon.
