About
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State University was designed by Arnold Palmer with the help of N.C. State graduates Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson. It's home to the university's men's and women's golf teams but it's open to the public as well. It's a favorite among locals who claim it's one of the toughest golf courses in the Triangle. The course sprawls across more than 200 acres on the southernmost portion of Centennial Campus, a location that is easily accessible from I-40 and offers scenic views of the Raleigh skyline. The greens can be difficult to read and they are often framed by rough
areas and strategically placed bunkers that make them even trickier. It's an especially tough golf course to play on windy days. Lonnie Poole G.C. is a beast from the black tees but the shorter tees make it accessible for high handicappers.

Fun
Maintenance crew does a fantastic job of always keeping the course in excellent condition considering the volume of play it receives. Fun layout and pretty open in most spots. Greens can be tricky if you get in the wrong spots, but also plenty of slopes to utilize to get the ball close on approach shots. Pace of play isn’t very good, but that’s due to amount of play and course difficulty. Rangers do their best to keep play moving, but aren’t obnoxious about it. Best public course in Raleigh and always enjoyable to play.

Slow but enjoyable
Slow day, cart path only. Starting to green up but several bare spots on the green collars. The greens were quick but inconsistent due to rain and time of year.

Course is a gem, restaurant leaves a bad taste.
Love the course. It is difficult and challenging in all the right ways. The restaurant was a double bogey at best. I’ll not eat there again but will keep going back to play and practice.

Double booked
Unfortunately there was a 27 hole tournament on the day that i played. That resulted in a shortage of carts and very slow play. If you like 5 hr rounds this course is great. If not go elsewhere.

Greens beat up
Pace was play was extremely slow. Just over 5 hours to play. A lot of ball marks all over the greens, which a shame on such a nice course.

Great course/ Unfriendly Staff / Slow Pace
I live in Raleigh and have played Lonnie Poole many times. I love the course and location. However, the clubhouse staff here have typically been unpleasant and, in my opinion, unwelcoming. I hit balls here nearly twice a week most weeks and have had interactions with a majority of the clubhouse staff and would be challenged to remember a pleasant interaction above just being asked what I need. I certainly am not expecting a red carpet, but just be prepared to feel like you can’t leave the clubhouse fast enough for them.
Of course I’ll be back because of the proximity. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to play here- only because of staff.
If you’re looking for a fun course with great staff go play Duke. Some of the nicest staff and the majority of people that play there are very friendly. The greens are also in better shape and much faster if you prefer that.

Slow going

Course is in decent shape but it would have been nice to know beforehand that they have mats on all the par threes.

Lonnie Poole firstimer
Was surprised and impressed. My only caveat was the condition of the course, but given the time of year - mid-March - I understand the conditioning - trimmed down rough, early stages of new grass, etc. will have to play in high season to review again.
