Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University
About
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State University was designed by Arnold Palmer with the help of N.C. State graduates Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson. It's home to the university's men's and women's golf teams but it's open to the public as well. It's a favorite among locals who claim it's one of the toughest golf courses in the Triangle. The course sprawls across more than 200 acres on the southernmost portion of Centennial Campus, a location that is easily accessible from I-40 and offers scenic views of the Raleigh skyline. The greens can be difficult to read and they are often framed by rough
areas and strategically placed bunkers that make them even trickier. It's an especially tough golf course to play on windy days. Lonnie Poole G.C. is a beast from the black tees but the shorter tees make it accessible for high handicappers.

Great course very challenging
First time playing at Lonnie Poole. Great track played in 4 hours. Staff and starter were a pleasure to talk to. Tough course but multiple tee options allow you to make it more or less difficult. Great views of the Raleigh skyline!
Greens are So-So
The course is in great condition other than the greens. Greens have lots of thin areas and bare spots around the collars. Rest of course in great condition.
We need some nite temps into the low 60's to get the greens right. Always a fun play....from the correct tees......but I think it will be early Oct. before it's in prime condition.
Man size course
This course is not for the average golfer. Major trouble lurks on every hole except for a few. Even Par 5’s are difficult with hazards in play. Pretty stressful probably for anyone with a 10 HC or more. Long bunker shots the norm, if you go offline or short. Greens were not in good condition but the beauty of the course is from tee to green. Even good players will be challenged. Recommend playing a tee box up from what you’re used to, because there’s no roll right now. A lot of downhill lies on approach shots also make several tough holes even harder. I would play it again, simply because it’s really hard, and makes other courses look like a walk in the park.
Love Lonnie, Just Not It’s Best Day
Lonnie Poole is a great course, but today just wasn’t it’s best day. The pace of play was pretty slow (especially for a weekday), we dealt with course maintenance crews on multiple holes and the greens weren’t up to their traditional standard. That said, I’ll definitely go back, when I’ll be hoping Lonnie gets back to being the course I’ve known and love.
Great Course - Great price
This is a really great course - challenging. Great staff. Nice cart - GPS a bonus. Opportunity to challenge yourself. It would be great if courses like this can offer hot deals (cheaper rates <$30) more often so that we "poor" golfers get the opportunity to play on superb courses. It worked for me this time because Golf Now offered the $25 off next round. Promotions like that are great- Golf Now
Challenging but Fun and Fair
Bent greens had been verticut in past week. A little slow, inconsistent in speed. Rest of course in very good condition. Several collars around greens had been newly sodded. Love Lonnie but they really need to change to Bermuda greens.....the bent grass just doesn't tolerate NC summer heat. Probably won't play it again until mid-Sept when the nite temps drop.
Great course, but...
My son and I were excited to play this course together for the first time. As we were about to tee off, we were joined by another father (a member) and son... the son was 6. The young beginning “golfer” hit, or tried to hit, multiple tee shots on each hole and then whiffed, shanked and topped his way down the fairway. We endured this for 18 holes. It was not the experience we expected at a championship course with hefty green fees.
Best course in the Raleigh-Durham Area
Besides being one of the best courses in Central NC it also has tremendous views of the surrounding Raleigh area. Favorite course to play .
Great day of golf
Treated great. Conditions were very good. Couldn't have asked for anything better.
Challenging course, great conditions, pace of play poor
I thought the course was in great shape, extremely well maintained. But, pace of play was a problem. It was not a busy day there but there was a very slow twosome in front of us and the marshals, who were quite visible, did nothing to move play along. On a day when temperature was in the mid nineties, having to wait on every hole really detracts from the experience of this beautiful, challenging and well maintained course.
Better greens for a 5th star
The greens had been verticut and dressed a few weeks back, so they were hairy, soft and slow. On several occasions the ball plugged on the greens. I appreciate he fact that they were keeping them that way in the very hot weather, but would prefer the green speeds to be faster. Overall always a joy to play this track.
Very nice
Outstanding course that’s getting a little work done around the greens. One small complaint about the greens staff, in that there more than a little rude. They don’t get out of the way when your trying to hit up to the greens they are working on, and fly around on there carts while your trying to hit. Obviously not golfers. We even had one guy nearly hit us with his cart , really dump behavior . Otherwise it’s a beautiful place.
One of my favorites
LP is a fun and challenging layout. The conditions are typically good, and there is an abundance of tees. One of the best in the area.
Don't Walk This!
I struggle with the concept of golf cart required golf courses. It is not a sport if you cannot walk the course. On the front side, the meanders to and fro and has mindless walking between green and tee. The back side is a little better, but I will not return here.
Collars are dead
For a course that has the resources that NCSU has, along with a turf management program, they have somehow allowed all the collars around the greens to die. There is a good one to two fee around each green with nothing but dirt. They notified everyone in advance that they had aerated the greens but it just did not seem as though there was a lot of grass covering all the greens as other courses in the area. For the money they ask to play this course, it really should be in much better shape. If I am not mistaken they just held the NCAA men's regionals just a few weeks ago at the course.
Lived up to the Hype
Not much to say that hasn't already been said. Only downer about the round was that they just punched the greens so putting was not as fun as I had hoped. Otherwise great course; difficult, but multiple opportunities to score, and some really fun decisions especially on par 5s, of which there are plenty.
Bad greens and Aprons
Bad greens and Aprons. No grass at all on the aprons, greens were wicked fast at times, not consistent.
Hello Rick, thank you for the five stars! We are happy to hear that you found our course in great shape and had a positive experience with our staff. Thanks for stopping by, and we hope to see you again soon!
