Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University
About
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State University was designed by Arnold Palmer with the help of N.C. State graduates Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson. It's home to the university's men's and women's golf teams but it's open to the public as well. It's a favorite among locals who claim it's one of the toughest golf courses in the Triangle. The course sprawls across more than 200 acres on the southernmost portion of Centennial Campus, a location that is easily accessible from I-40 and offers scenic views of the Raleigh skyline. The greens can be difficult to read and they are often framed by rough
areas and strategically placed bunkers that make them even trickier. It's an especially tough golf course to play on windy days. Lonnie Poole G.C. is a beast from the black tees but the shorter tees make it accessible for high handicappers.

Good track
I love playing this course. If you're ever in Raleigh do yourself a favor and play this one.
Watch out for bad attitude staff
Lonnie Poole is one of the best courses in Raleigh in my eyes, great layout and almost always perfect course conditions. Its just a shame that they have some of the worst/mean people working in the pro shop, who give attitudes almost everyday. I also hear the same review from most of the people playing there. The starters are fantastic and nice, just not so much the people working the register in the pro shop.
Beautiful Course but Overpriced
Course was beautiful as always. However the tees were not in good shape at all. The course layout is tough but fair. I do think for what you get there are other courses in the area that are comparable for a much better price.
In the future if Lonnie could bring those down to a little more reasonable price it would make for once a month customers rather than most who I play with who maybe play once a year.
Lonnie Poole a Great Layout
Have played Lonnie since the day it opened (literally). A very fun, interesting layout....if you play from the proper tees. Bent grass greens get sketchy come August (they were a bit shaggy, slow on 7/12/17).
My only issue is the sand in the bunkers....too much, too heavy. Great play using Golf Now Hot Deal.
Rest of course in very good condition.
Think the course flow would be better if they started play on the current #10 hole.....things can back up now with players going back to clubhouse for drinks/food at turn.
Course Management
For the most part, this course is wide open and receptive to a driver on all 4's and 5's. There are risk/reward holes as well, that can be parred easily by teeing off with a well placed long iron. The clubhouse should offer a free drink to anyone who can finish without experiencing a bunker. Very helpful to know what the greens will do on approach shots -- there are some occasional severe slopes. Love going there and look forward to the next round!
Great Course
Fun to play. Every hole is unique with ample variety. Pro shop is well staffed and stocked. After round bar and food is great, although they give plenty of time to recount your strokes.
Awesome course
Really a hard course for me but it is very exciting and so green and clean. One of the best in North Carolina
Nice course
layout is challenging but fair, fairway is in great condition. Green is a bit slow but rolls true. Nice course and will be back.
Sublime...
Great course. You do have to know where to hit it. Can be a little tricky and some hidden trouble lurking on slightly off line shots. Not a flat lie anywhere but the greens held shots well and were in fair shape. Perfect speed, not blistering fast nor slow.
Don't let customer service ruin your round.
I got a hot deal for $40 so I couldn't pass it up. Interaction with staff was not good. I was rushed off the practice green 10 minutes before my tee time. Told by the ranger multiple times throughout the round to pick up pace even though we were stuck behind at least two groups. The greens looked like they were recently aerated (very sandy) but were manageable. The fairways were in great condition. The tee boxes were hit or miss. They were either in pristine condition or just a dirt patch. The carts track your pace of play and let you know when you're behind pace which can be kind of annoying. Overall it was a good experience but they should work on their customer service.
Great Course
Perfect day, tremendous course, staff was extremely helpful and friendly especially the starters. It was my 1st time playing there so all the tips and advice they gave was great! Will definitely play there again. if in The RDU area, it is a must play.
Nice!
Nicer course than I usually play, well maintained. Greens had recently been aerated but were still as good or better than courses I usually play. GPS on cart was occasionally annoying, telling you to return to cart path on holes/areas that seemed to be marked as OK for cart traffic. Cost $13.50 for two Powerades and two candy bars -- might want to bring your own. ... But for the golf, was nice to play a course with consistent fairways, interesting layout, some challenge but not unfair in any way. I would definitely play there again.
What a blast, thanks Arnie
What a great time we had playing this course after our plane landed in Raleigh to start our Pinehurst vacation. The layout is spectacular with elevation changes that give you great views of the skyline of Raleigh and really nice landing areas that allow you to score on this course. The greens were splendid with great pace and they rolled true all day. Be smart with your distances as the elevation changes really do effect your distances. The staff was phenomenal including the folks in the restaurant who were really great to speak with. This was such a great experience for us, we will be back and we hardly every play the same course twice on vacations.
Experience Unlike Anything Else Around
Great course. Always in good shape. In the top 3 on list of courses I check first when making a tee time. Would play more often if not for price but definitely worth a splurge. Would be nice if they had more deals on GolfNow when they need to fill slots.
Used to have an awesome pace-of-play rule to keep things from backing up (1. warning, 2. move you up a hole, 3. invite you back for another day). Not sure if they still do, but seems to back up less than other courses that couldn't care less about 5 hour rounds.
Lonnie Poole Golf
Very nice course with a great layout! Early in the season so the fairways were not as lush as I would expect at the height o.f the season. Greens were relatively quick and true. Tees were not in very good shape. Ran across two large black snakes. First on 14 tee and second on 17 cart path. Wasn't prepared for that!
Wow Conditions
Played on May 1.
Greens were NOT that fast.
Fairways were EXCELLENT (felt like a carpet)
Personally, I like this course more than
Finley.
Nice Course
Greens were very slow for a course of this caliber. Beer cart was non existent on the back nine.
