Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University
About
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State University was designed by Arnold Palmer with the help of N.C. State graduates Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson. It's home to the university's men's and women's golf teams but it's open to the public as well. It's a favorite among locals who claim it's one of the toughest golf courses in the Triangle. The course sprawls across more than 200 acres on the southernmost portion of Centennial Campus, a location that is easily accessible from I-40 and offers scenic views of the Raleigh skyline. The greens can be difficult to read and they are often framed by rough
areas and strategically placed bunkers that make them even trickier. It's an especially tough golf course to play on windy days. Lonnie Poole G.C. is a beast from the black tees but the shorter tees make it accessible for high handicappers.

After a week of weather in the teens and some snow the course was in great shape and the greens were probably playing at about 11 on the stemp meter.the traps were damp due to a slight mist thru-out the day but were also in great shape..cant say enough, especially for the price, its usually out of my price range during "season"Great Course...ps the hotdog at the turn wasn't much to talk about
Great design
I was impressed with a modern club house and practice area.
Unfortunately, they closed 5 holes due to frost, unable to play.
The course has a definite character
First Time Here and LOVED it!
This course and its layout are beautiful! If you love extremely fast greens, this is the place for you. Short game is my strength, so I loved the speedy greens. Also, the greens were GREEN and well taken care of, unlike some other courses that let their greens die in winter. I used to live in the area, but never played this course, for some reason. I was back in town visiting friends, and decided to play. I definitely missed out playing this course on a regular basis. If you get a chance, while you're in the Raleigh area, play this course! I surely will, when I return to visit!
Big boys course !!!
Been wanting to play this since forever....
Finally got a chance while visiting some family .
Course is spectacular , a real test of your game greens were very fast ... I would guess around 12.
The facility Is first class ... they had the grass shut down due to maintenance seedling . No biggie 7 bucks for bucket . Weather was windy and cold so we played the red tees 6500 or so . While one of the college kids played black 7000
It’s crucial that you play the right tees for your HCP
In order to enjoy yourself here more than ever . I’m a single digit Hcp and in this day with the weather and course difficulty I had all I wanted in my plate .
Pace was slowwwww.... in fairness there was a large group of golfers that were stinking up the place ..rangers had there hands full and we did have a two some jump in front of us . Other than that all was good .
You can see the city from on a few of the holes make sure to snap a few shots without holding up pace.
Staff was professional and courteous.
Love to try this again with better weather.
Fair fun and challenging!
Well laid out course with challenging holes. Take a couple time to play to adjust to contours and placement on greens. Loved them. Great condition greens true and fair. Can't wait to play again!
Great Course
Great Course, excellent condition, greens were perfect and fast!
Good layout, expensive and can be slow
Good layout but over priced compared to local courses, greens are pacey but let down by players lack of pitch mark repairs making them bumpy
Par 3s are strong
7300 off tips is a real challenge, the blues @ 6500 will give a good challenge
A must play course
Lonnie Poole is a must play course with tees boxes to fit the games of scratch players to beginners. Conditions were very good. Only down side was drink and snack bar does not open until 9AM and was late. Service at turn was a little slow which hurts pace of play. Prices for food and drinks are very fair.
Raleigh skyline on back side is a unique feature. Great proton, well stocked and service is friendly.
Wonderful layout, very cool bunkering
Despite being quite crowded, pace of play was very good. Really enjoyed this layout. Feels like a Coore/Crenshaw design with the shaggy bunker edges and undulating greens. Some great views here and no homes/development on the course really make this a great experience. Greens were in excellent shape as were the fairways. Highly recommend this and Duke University Golf Course when in the area.
A Must Play in RDU
Lonnie Poole is a must play course if you live and/or are visiting the Raleigh Durham area. I had a few guys coming from Southern NC and had the responsibility of picking the course so Lonnie Poole (and UNC Finley) are my go to selections. Lonnie Poole plays long and offers a great challenge for advanced golfers. Picking the right tees is key here as that will set the tone for how course is played that day. The course elevates at various points and offers some great views of the Downtown Raleigh skyline along the way.
Championship Course
This is simply an awesome course. Beautiful facilities, challenging course, and great scenery. I would probably have given this course a 5 star rating but some time near the end of the front nine a marshal, not so kindly, told us we needed to pick up the speed. Well we were in a threesome, I shot 73 from the tips and the other guys played a couple tees up and shot in the mid-90's. There was no one pushing behind us at all, and to that point we were waiting regularly on a foursome in front of us who were CLEARLY struggling around this course. I understand the cart said we were a few minutes behind but it was obviously it wasn't our fault and it left a very bad taste in my mouth that he was so rude to us without assessing the situation. I will say the rest of the staff was nice and helpful.
Very good course
Excellent condition and beautifully designed with numerous elevation changes and views of the Raleigh skyline.Challenging and fun course to play even with the abundant strategically placed bunkers .Nice amenities like friendly staff and reasonable prices at the snack bar. A little pricey but worth it!
Great Course
Great course, tight fairways on some, wide on others, long par 4s, and scorable par 4s, short and long par 3s, its a players course.
One dig, and its not the course's fault, if your playing at a nice course like this, fix your ball marks you goons, and pick your feet up when you walk on the greens ! Nothing worse than people with spiked shoes that drag their feet all over the green and wont fix a ball mark, because they paid to play there !
Excellent and challenging
Amazing course
Red tees were more than enough distance
Watch each other's shots because errant balls are hard to find
Take your time and measure the shots
Awesome layout- awesome staff and food in the new clubhouse also excellent
Can't wait to play again
A true gem with unique city views
Visitors to Raleigh must check it out!
