Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State University was designed by Arnold Palmer with the help of N.C. State graduates Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson. It's home to the university's men's and women's golf teams but it's open to the public as well. It's a favorite among locals who claim it's one of the toughest golf courses in the Triangle. The course sprawls across more than 200 acres on the southernmost portion of Centennial Campus, a location that is easily accessible from I-40 and offers scenic views of the Raleigh skyline. The greens can be difficult to read and they are often framed by rough

areas and strategically placed bunkers that make them even trickier. It's an especially tough golf course to play on windy days. Lonnie Poole G.C. is a beast from the black tees but the shorter tees make it accessible for high handicappers.

Great Layout

Tremendous layout. Great courteous staff and rangers that actually didn't tolerate slow play. My son and I had a really nice day.

The course is not for walkers...lol

Enjoyed it. We came on a day when they were aerating and we were told we had to play the front nine twice...not what you want to hear when you get out once a month...if we had called directly we would have known before hand but got a good rate on Golf Now...so what are you going to do. We would have preferred some additional discount due to the fact that even the greens they let us play (the front nine) had been recently aerated themselves and were not exactly playable...be back in fall and try again.

The course has great potential!

Overall, it's a good design. It's only downfall is it is overplayed. The tee boxes seem to suffer the worst as very few players actually fill in the divots. The green complexes seem to do well in North Carolina weather. The staff is not to blame, the players who play the course should shoulder this burden.

Great layout, great setting, one of my favorite in the area

What a great course in a wonderful location. First time playing and I can say it is one of my favorite courses now. Everything was great down to service and quality of play. Very challenging but fun. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a well maintained , and fun course . The 667 yard par 5 overlooking the Raleigh skyline was really a treat.

Fun day with a deal!

I have played this course before but enjoy it more each time. The $45 rate at 2:00 was a great deal and we were able to finish comfortably. The course was very busy and had waits on most tees but that was the only downfall. I would recommend to anyone who hasn't played the course before.

Arnie Creates Monster for Wolfpack

This course is a beast! Based on demands of golfers the course had to be re-rated/sloped recently and scored harder than originally thought. In response the course added another set of moderate tees for the average golfer. This is a course that makes me wish I had gone to a big university with an awesome golf program. The idea that college kids and alumni get to experience this course on a regular or daily basis makes me extremely jealous. Big, wide fairways. Enormous bunkers with plenty of wastes areas in them make this course one where you need to think and put your ball in proper places to score well. There are no tricks and all the hazards are there before your eyes. It's up to you to avoid them. All the various grasses they used for different parts of the course are well maintained and make the value for your money very high. If I lived in/around Raleigh I'm not sure I'd play anywhere else.

Exciting layout and great greens

We played Lonnie Poole in early August, the course was in great shape. They are in the process of building the clubhouse so the driving range and putting areas were a little confusing. Yet we took our time and warmed up appropriately.
The greens were fast and undulating. The work crews were installing an irrigation system. The carts are old and worn out however I would imagine when they open the clubhouse they will replace them as they are very old carts.
I would play it again.

Awesome Course

Lonnie Poole is an excellent course. Lots of topography. The course is always in excellent conditions and the greens were almost perfect. The clubhouse is currently under construction which doesn't give a good first appearance, but the course is great. Very challenging course and course management is at a premium. Be prepared to lose some balls because there are lots of hazards that suck up poor shots. Shot accuracy is required, as a wayward shot often times ends up in a bad lie requiring a layup shot. This is NOT a course for beginners. Unfortunately, I was was randomly paired with some very high handicap golfers and spent most of the round looking for their balls. Our round was over 5 hours long. But that shouldn't be the norm. This is definately a course you want to play.

Great Course; Fun and Somewhat Challenging, but Manageable!

I played the course with my 20 year old son and we had a great time. The course can be challenging because of the placement of sand bunkers and water on a number of the holes, but it is manageable for a 12-14 handicapper such as myself. I am not a long hitter by any means, and that was not a problem on this course. It is a course where accuracy is important to score well. Overall, it was a very fun time. I will definitely play there again.

Wonderful course.

The course was beautiful and challenging. It is a young course so I'd love to see it in 5-10 years once there are more wooded areas that will be filled out by then. My only complaint is on the 10th hole, I almost got hit in the head by a ball that came within a foot of hitting me in the head from the driving range. I think a net should be put up on the boundary of the range and the 10th fairway.

Slow play ruined the round

I love this course. Very challenging from back tee's. However on this day the pace of play was unbelievably slow!!! waited on every shot! Ranger drove by and asked if we had been waiting, we said yes, he said well that's about normal. Why even have a ranger then? 5+ hour rounds are ridiculous. We were paired with another twosome. They chose to quit after a 3 hour front nine... we should have done the same.

Tough, but fair, track

Always an enjoyable round due to the challenge of the course. Lonnie Poole is pretty tough, especially from the Black tees, but is fair and fun. I would not pay the rack price, as I don't believe it is worth the price, but anytime there is a HotDeal for <$40, I would say its worth it.

i like the links resemblances.

The course is in great shape! The links style set up is unique in the area. We have some great courses around but this one sets itself apart. The greens are fast but they roll true, they can be deceiving though so make sure you look at every putt from both sides of the hole. I just wish they would lower their prices so more could enjoy it. They are doing major construction though so I guess the steep prices are helping cover costs for the new clubhouse. Keep your eyes on the HOT DEALS section, I played for $29.

Best Public Course in Raleigh

Booked tee time through golfnow for 3 people. Got to the course and a friend wanted to join us. The staff was able to make this happen for us, which saved us a headache. The course was in remarkable shape and continues to grow in nicely, despite how new it is relatively speaking. It is very difficult if you tend to spray the ball, however. It was CPO when we played, which made it a long day. The experience was well worth it, especially when the cart girl had turned in for the afternoon and we called the proshop and one of the guys brought us some refreshments (we then realized we didn't have enough cash - he took our credit card to the shop, ran it, and returned it to us on the course. THAT'S service!). I cannot rate this place highly enough- it's only going to continue to get better and will be amazing when the new clubhouse is finished. Congrats to the team @ LPGC. Well done.

Beautiful

Beautiful course
Large landing areas. Large greens. Due to significant rain in the area it was carts on path which slowed play somewhat.

Loads of fescue, however the landing ares for the most part are large and only wayward shots found the fescue.
