Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University
About
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State University was designed by Arnold Palmer with the help of N.C. State graduates Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson. It's home to the university's men's and women's golf teams but it's open to the public as well. It's a favorite among locals who claim it's one of the toughest golf courses in the Triangle. The course sprawls across more than 200 acres on the southernmost portion of Centennial Campus, a location that is easily accessible from I-40 and offers scenic views of the Raleigh skyline. The greens can be difficult to read and they are often framed by rough
areas and strategically placed bunkers that make them even trickier. It's an especially tough golf course to play on windy days. Lonnie Poole G.C. is a beast from the black tees but the shorter tees make it accessible for high handicappers.

tough course
you better hit the fairways, the grass is 4 feet tall just off the fairways, and there is grass in some of the bunkers.
Nice course layout
Greens had ben aerated recently- very bumpy- wasn;t aware of this when I made the Tee time.
No GPS on carts- type of course where a GPS would be handy
Sandtraps
Arnold loves his sandtraps. My problem is they are really waste bunkers, I'd prefer they be just sand bunkers. Also, they want you to complete your round in 4:22 but if you miss the fairway, the rough is so high you can't find your ball. I don't mind dropping but there are others who will look over 5 minutes for their Top Flite. Cut the rough to make finding your ball quicker which will help speed up rounds.
beautiful!
Fun and tough course. My only complaint were lack of marshals and refreshment cart.
new course that plays very well...
built within the last 5 years this course is in very good shape. pace of play is slow due to long grass and folks playing from tees they have no business playing at... nonetheless, a must play in the RDU area.
new clubhouse construction has limited the amount of parking available.
staff was great.
Test your game....book a round on this one!
Challenging but fair course. First-timers should consider moving up one. If you are playing well you'll love this course. If not, it's misery. Spraying shots will blowup your scorecard and lose balls. Watch out for the hazards within the bunkers. Scenic holes. Limited number of practice area Tees. Forget about walking this course unless you are super fit. Carts are slow but equipped (no GPS). Would definitely recommend this course and look forward to replaying.
Very challenge, very nice layout, very well maintained
I dont need to say much. If you are looking to play a course that has very nice tee boxes, very nice fairways, very nice bunkers, very nice and fast greens, and very nice staffs, then just go play Lonnie Poole. If you are looking for some great tee time deals, then check out golfnow.com.
No houses, few if any OB stakes, very natrual - loved it.
The course is very challenging: length, sand, tall grass & big sloping greens make it tough. There are very few OB stakes though which makes it fare. Well marked in fairways but not sure about pin locations.
Harder than your avg public course
Right off the 1st tee I knew this was going to be a good round on a good course. Long PAR 5's, long PAR 4s and challenging PAR 3's. Bunkers and trees can come into play virtually every hole if you play driver on 4s and 5s. I can't wait to play this track again
a real enjoyable course.
The course was well kept except for a few spots of hardpan, the Toff's were in great shape, the course was very challenging because of the massive amount of sand and water, some of the rough areas were to the extreme, the greens were in great shape, some of the fairways were kind of tight but manageable.one of the other things that made the course kind of nice is they had areas set up in the middle of the course to chip and put incase you had to wait for the next tee and they had table's on the tee boxes to set your things on or enjoy a drink and some food while you wait, on top of all that the course was very hilly and scenic. I would love to be able to play that course again at an respectable rate.
Great Course.
The course is a great test for all levels of golfers. Plenty of challenging risk/reward holes and great greens to go with it. I will certainly play again.
Great course layout
I really enjoyed the layout of this course. With heavily bunkered greens and fairways this course can be as challenging as you want depending on the tees you choose. The course was well maintained for this time of year and the pace was reasonable in relation to the number of players. Like any course you can usually get around quicker on a weekday. The staff has always been cordial and responsive. I hope to play Lonnie Poole many more times and I do highly recommend it.
What an experience...and for $15 -- best value
Will definitely play there again - especially if it's under $20. Great deal - had the course to myself - no rush - no waiting for troops ahead. Great day - thanks
this course. is kept in great shape and is very challenging
I have played this course several times and it keeps bringing me back. The pace of play can be a bit slow. But it is worth it. The staff is super friendly. The greens are usually in very good shape. That is very important to me. I am very satisfied with this course. The price I paid online is exceptional for this course.
Top of my list to go back too
Wow, one of the finest if not the finest I have played in the Raleigh area so far.
I have played four different top rated courses, so far.
Right now it's at the top of my list, followed by Crooked Creek.
I have one more week to play as many different course as I can.
Next on my list to play is Eagle Ridge.
Excellent
Excellent course - Good quality - Nice facilities. I enjoyed the course... Was a great challenge to skills - shot making - targeting
Unbridled Potential
Consider the month was December, third week at that; the day was sunny, the temperature was in the mid sixty range you could not have found a better place to play. The newness of the course remains evident in places but the overall experience is well worth the pricing. Tees, fairways, greens as well as the rough are nicely groomed throughout the course.
Our pace of play was slowed due to many people taking the week prior to Christmas off from work and the day lending itself to golf with bright sunshine; however, the lack of knowledge of the course's difficulty was a contributing factor to the pace of play as most foursomes I saw were playing tee sets that posed too much for the players' abilities. There are six sets of tees for good reason. The staff should be better instructed in helping visiting golfers, like myself, choose appropriate tees from which to play in order to keep play under 5 hours.
Great course, tough, but in good condition even in the winter.

Great views. Unique design.
Tough course. Must pick the right tees. Great design.
Staff always friendly.
Course is in good shape.
Lonnie Poole is in the best shape that I've experience on it, since opening. It does get a lot of play so expect at least a 4.5 hour + round. The layout differences from the front nine to the back nine is a nice contrast and makes it's one of the more exciting courses to play in the triangle. They offer enough tee box selections that one can find a distance that works for one's game.
