Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University
About
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State University was designed by Arnold Palmer with the help of N.C. State graduates Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson. It's home to the university's men's and women's golf teams but it's open to the public as well. It's a favorite among locals who claim it's one of the toughest golf courses in the Triangle. The course sprawls across more than 200 acres on the southernmost portion of Centennial Campus, a location that is easily accessible from I-40 and offers scenic views of the Raleigh skyline. The greens can be difficult to read and they are often framed by rough
areas and strategically placed bunkers that make them even trickier. It's an especially tough golf course to play on windy days. Lonnie Poole G.C. is a beast from the black tees but the shorter tees make it accessible for high handicappers.

Nice Tract & Great Staff!
The course has fairly wide fairways, yet offers challenges of doglegs, fairway bunkers & some uphill/downhill lies. You can attack the large greens but know where to land your approaches to save you an extra putt! A fun course to play!
One of my Favorites
I have only had the opportunity to play here a few times, but one of the best courses I've ever played. The variety of holes is awesome!
Great Golf Course
This golf course is very well designed and gives you any golf a challenge. The course conditions are amazing and the staff couldn't be better. This is a course you will want to play over and over again.
Lonnie Poole in December
Fairways were in good condition -,challenging course
Decent
A little pricey and the staff seems to think they work at Augusta or something, but I would recommend playing it when you get a deal.
Lonnie Poole is the most beautiful golf course in the Triangle and the best value for your golf dollar.
Lonnie Poole is the most beautiful golf course in the Triangle and the best value for your golf dollar. The scenery on and surrounding the course is gorgeous. The course has a lot of undulations and change of elevation from the tee to the green. The best way I can describe Lonnie Poole is to say that the course has a lot of character. It also presents a lot of challenges. If you can play well at Lonnie Poole, you can take your golf game anywhere else and be confident in your abilities. I cannot wait to play it again.
Excellent test
Requires every club in your bag! Must be precise off the tee to avoid the bunkers.
Easily top 3 public course in Raleigh/Durham market
New Arnold Palmer designed public course ( w/n 5yrs) here in Raleigh. I've played three times and always seem to score well. It has extremely scenic holes where the city skyline is a highlight. The course is right in front of you. No gimmicks, just well planned and placed holes. It looks like the massive club house is close to completion. It should be a treat in the spring. I found its always difficult finding a super friendly staff at university courses. It seems the staff are just to young to master exceptional customer service. Validation at both UNC and State course. But if you are in the Raleigh/Durham area, PLAY THIS COURSE. A few years ago Golf Magazine rated Raleigh 47th of 50 areas in the country to play, before this course was completed.
Very Picturesque
One of my favorite golf courses. I do not get to play a course with that much land without seeing houses surrounding the course.
Great greens. Very fast course
Greens and fairways were in great condition. Fast course with lots of sand. Pin placements required accuracy but were not too hard to reach
super fast greens
beautiful layout N.C. state home course very fast greens with several tiers and curves some elevation changes
Not too bad a course.
Nice layout, some very scenic, tough holes. I'm a bit torn on whether this course is worth the premium pricing, but it's not a bad track.
Great Course
I rate this course the best public in the RDU area!!!! A must play for the avid golfer. Shot 76 from the tips and it was all you want at almost 7,000 yds
Best shape of any public course in the area!
The only downfall to Lonnie Poole this weekend was the lack of a beverage cart. It was 75* on a busy Saturday, but not a beverage cart in sight. However, this course is in awesome shape outside of the fringe on one or two greens being repaired/replaced. There isn't a course in the area with better fairways or greens right now, and the sight of the clubhouse nearing completion gives us all something to look forward to in the future. A bit of a cluster with all the carts near the putting green, but the starter/ranger did an outstanding job in getting the cart situation under control and getting the tee times off right at their scheduled times.
awesome course with great views
We enjoyed playing this challenging course on a beautiful day. Very quiet and peaceful even with the new clubhouse construction.
Challenging golf course with fast, immaculate greens.
The course is well maintained with excellent , fast greens. Subtle to severe breaks in the greens add to the challenge. Five sets of tees accommodate any level of play. I look forward to seeing the new clubhouse, which is under construction.
Good views, fun course
Recently moved to Raleigh and played this course several times now. It is a fun course with great views of downtown Raleigh. I'll definitely be heading back.
Best Layout in the Area
Unique combination of fun and challenging. Course is long on the scorecard but plays shorter due to downhill approaches and tee shots. Fairways provide plenty of room off the tee. Nothing unfair about the design and by far the best Palmer course I've played.
Super Layout
I am 66 years old and do not hit the ball that far....But even with the length of the course it was challenging and fair. I will play there again and bring more friends with me. Can,t wait till the Club House is finished, should be exceptional.
