Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State University was designed by Arnold Palmer with the help of N.C. State graduates Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson. It's home to the university's men's and women's golf teams but it's open to the public as well. It's a favorite among locals who claim it's one of the toughest golf courses in the Triangle. The course sprawls across more than 200 acres on the southernmost portion of Centennial Campus, a location that is easily accessible from I-40 and offers scenic views of the Raleigh skyline. The greens can be difficult to read and they are often framed by rough

areas and strategically placed bunkers that make them even trickier. It's an especially tough golf course to play on windy days. Lonnie Poole G.C. is a beast from the black tees but the shorter tees make it accessible for high handicappers.

second time impressions...

Still enjoy the layout, visually and how it's set up. Never found a sand trap (a good thing) so can't comment there. The issue is with the greens. After three weeks past aeration, they are still very slow (maybe an 7 or 8?), bumpy, and inconsistent. No run on the fairways either but probably wet weather related. Low screaming draws would hit the fairway and stop dead in two yards. In two months, it will be glorious I'm guessing. The weather and pace of play was excellent, despite the 90-degree rule in place.

Great golf

Staff was friendly, we were teeing off at 1020 with 3 people. The woman starter said she has never seen a threesome go off and we were told to wait she was determined to get a 4th. She left we waited another guy came down and asked if we were waiting for someone we told him what she said . He told us to go no problem, he was friendly and nice. She obviously had no idea what she was doing. After playing a couple holes we noticed about half the groups out there were 3s. Even the group that was in front of us was a 3 some. I give her credit for being determined to add a single on but not this time. It was great golf great course.

Best Course You Can Play in Raleigh

Aside from the heat index being 108 degrees, course was in great shape. Greens were a little softer/slower than normal but still rolled true. Putting green is being redone and looked like it would be closed for awhile.

Worth a $63 Hot Deal every day and twice on Sunday. Would pay full price only if I was from out of town and playing it once, but that goes for every university course in the Triangle these days.
