Laurel Hill Golf Club
About
Laurel Hill Golf Club has some of the best conditions of any public course in the area, which is why it is popular amongst the locals. It is hard to believe that the club sits where the DC Department of Corrections facility at Lorton used to be located. The layout has a traditional design, but unlike older golf courses it runs a lengthy 7,102 yards from the back tees. The greens are lightning fast and undulating. There is defined contouring throughout the course, which allows for some interesting holes. Although the fairways are wide open they are still punishing towards errant shots. There are dramatic elevation changes throughout the golf course, making a flat lie nearly impossible to find. The course provides a formidable test for even the most seasoned players.

Hole 16, Par 3, 185 yards Photo submitted by EthanZimman on 06/17/2013
One of my favorites in northern Virginia
This course is a fun course to play. A little pricey but worth the money. Some of the holes are wide open from the tee but still very challenging from tee to green. The course condition is immaculate. Green can be fast. The only drawback is that the course sits on top of a hill and it seems to be windy most of the time. I will definitely play again.
Long and challenging course
Laurel Hills is my favorite course in the DC Metro area. The course was in excellent condition. The greens were still fast even after rain earlier in the day. Fairways and greens were excellent! The only issue was geese on number 18. Caused for difficult putting surface. Overall, I can't wait to play it again
Quick greens, visually appealing
not superfast greens. People need to learn to repair ball marks! Lots of divots in fairways because it was cart path. Nice views from tee boxes, tee ball needed to carry over wasteland on some holes. Fair, but challenging.
Great condition before amateur tournament
Only complain is that cart path only policy made it impossible to guess distance form the pin. The layout is tricky and slope makes updown, and contains lot of doglegs. I understand the course makes strict policy for amateur tournament next month, but little bit stress for first time golfers. The price is expensive if I pay regular price ($70), but $55 makes sense even if weekday deal. I played very badly in score, will be back to play in the near future.
Best Course in NoVA
I have played over 20 courses classified in GolfNow's "VA - Northern" region and Laurel Hill is BY FAR the best course in almost every respect. For a course owned and operated by Fairfax County you would think it might be rough around the edges. All tees, fairways, rough (plenty of it), and greens were in pristine shape. While this might be due to the fact they're hosting the USGA Public Links Amateur tournament in the summer, I got the feeling this is just how it is at all times. The driving range is large, the practice green is ample size, and the practice putting green ran true to the conditions on the course.
Every other review might focus on how difficult the course is or how long it plays. While the course is very challenging I never thought it was unfair or unplayable. The fairways are generally pretty wide with some holes requiring the player to carry the ball off the tee a fair distance. The greens were running a bit slow, but I assume that was just because it's easier for people to get around the course quicker on the weekend. You could tell that they're in good enough condition that they could be made much, much faster if the superintendent wanted.
This is one of the few courses in the area that can justify its high ($100) greens fees on the weekends. However, we started our round at 3:30pm and easily finished with enough daylight for a another few holes. The "super twilight" rate would almost feel like stealing. Awesome course.
Great Public Course
Rivals Private courses in just about every way - except gets crowded with slower play on weekends/holidays. Expensive for a public course, but it's hosting the 2013 US Amateur Qualifier in July 2013, so that speaks volumes.
Best public course in Northern VA
Course was in excellent shape. Challenging - good mixture of long and short holes - picturesque - 10 minute tee times. Paces was still a tad slow.
challenging golf course in good shape. Has a tendency to be overpriced for area golf courses
good course chalenging and in good shhape Has a tendency to be overpriced
Excellent layout; complete test of your game.
Well designed tract that tests all aspects of your game. Wide fairways with subtle undulating greens that play fast.
Great place to play
Don't miss playing here. Wide fairways, tough traps, huge undulating greens with great facilities and staff to help you enjoy your outing.
Good test of golf. Be prepared to play from proper tees!
I have played here several times and look forward to coming back. it is an excellent test of golf and has tee boxes which allow the course to be played from 5,000 to 7,100 yards.
The course is in very good condition, not surprising since the USGA Amateur Public Links Championship will be held here in July. Note: USGA is looking for volunteers and each shift will earn you a round of golf at LHGC or any of the other county courses.
The marshals have done a good job of keeping the pace of play moving. I have noticed that many people play from tee boxes which are beyond their abilities. Come on boys! There is nothing shameful about playing from the senior tees: 6,000 yards, slope 134. You will enjoy your round better if you at least give yourself a chance for a par once in a while!
Some players arrive at the course with attitudes. Add a little beer and the next thing you know they are driving their carts all over the place, taking huge divots and not replacing them and berating the staff.
I've played with many of the members and find them to be a pleasant group. One or two think that a round of golf should be played in three hours, but most are cordial.
The pro shop is well-stocked and the little restaurant has very good sandwiches.
The course has an events calendar online, so check ahead before coming out. There are quite a few outings and other events during the season. Maintenance usually closes the course on Tuesday mornings.
The scenery is nice and the wildlife abundant (deer, turkeys, foxes, hawks. I even saw an eagle at the pond on #16 once.)
Interesting, challenging layout. Be prepared to pay and wait though...
Certainly an enjoyable course and well maintained. Two steps above the typical municipal course, although it was still a bit hard to stomach the price given the pace of play (slow) and silly rules (cart path only and a closed practice green; perhaps even a dying USGA event brings with it delusions of grander.)
Regardless, the layout was interesting and challenging; lots of elevation changes, and it was nice to play a course that gives one a bit of space off the tee. Be sure to choose the correct set of tees though; even the whites play long, particularly on a windy day.
One final note; walking is more or less a nonstarter and the course is poorly marked. The obligatory carts do not come equipped with a gps system, so bring your own or be prepared to eyeball it like the old timers.
Beautiful, challenging course
My son and I played this course from the 6,700 yard blue tees during a practice round for a tournament or else we probably would have played 6,300 yards. The course is set on a beautiful property and the contours of the terrain require somewhat careful shotmaking. The blues on the front 9 were almost 3,500 yards, and features some really long uphill holes, With the wind howling during our round, reaching greens in regulation was tough for both of us, and then, with a number of holes with false fronts and two-tiered greens, getting up and down was also challenging. Overall, a great test and for the money, totally worth it, especially with the Golfnow discount. I can see why the USGA is planning to host the US Public Links championship there.
Course is awesome. Very challenging and big time feeling. Nice use of the land. Nice staff. Sunday afternoon following a 9 4some outing?
On a Sunday afternoon with the temperature @ 35-40 degrees and rainy, there was an outing ahead of me. I, as a single asked the group I caught up with if I could play through and was denied by one of the members of the foursome. I later joined 3 players who were local and made a few calls to the clubhouse to get the groups to pick up pace. The group in front of us declared that there was nothing he could do about it cause the outing they were playing in required all players to putt everything out. These were players getting bogeys, double, and triple bogey at best. There was some help from staff and for about 5 holes the pace picked up to an acceptable level but then went back to waiting 3-5 minutes for each shot!! No kidding. The only reason I didn't leave was because I am from out of town and also the guys I played with were very funny and made the best of a lousey situation. What a shame that a beautiful course can be ruined by slow play. Especially surprising on such a raw afternoon that usually only brings out the hard core golfer type....
Teed off at 11:57am and finished at 6:00pm!!!!!!!!!
The course is nice. It is expensive. The staff treats the public poorly. Dont play there.
I have been there numerous times. The course is in good shape. The staff has harrassed me every time I have played there. As a member of the public, you are treated like a second class citizen. It is A municipal course that has memberships and they like to create an upper class feeling for the members. One time on January, I called to see if I was ok to dress in Nike warmups. They said yes. I got there and the starter told me I couldnt play as I did not have a collared shirt. on. It was 40 degrees. An argument ensued. It was not a fun round. Aniother time, I went to the practice area and the ranger said my ture was on the grass and I was chipping on the wrong area of the practice area. There wre no marlings or directions provided. Another time in March, I was with a twosome and a fourspome in front was talking on cellphones looking for balls in the woods. They became angry when we went around them to the next tee yelling at us. They called the ranger and he reprimanded us. They were members who lied to the ranger but the ranger kicked us off the course. Since members pay, they kiss up to them. This is the worst course I have ever been too for professionalism and customer service.
Great course in Lorton
This was the second time i played this course and it's in the dead of the winter and it still looked amazing. I would def play this course more if it wasn't so expensive.
Great layout
Arrived early and was greeted by the very friendly pro shop staff and on asking if I could tee off early was told the starter would fit me in when I was ready to play. On informing the starter that I had not played the course before he gave me a very detailed breakdown of the first 9 holes which added to my enjoyment. The course is challenging but fair with reasonably wide fairways and the rough is tricky to get out off but not too long that you can't find your ball. With all the frost lately I was impressed by teh condition of the course.
I will definately be back when the weather improves.
February Golf @ Laurel Hill
The greens ran a little slower than usual, but what can be expected after several hard freezes, and recent snow, sleet and ice? The course is in amazing condition considering it's February 6th.
Laurel Hill remains one of the very best courses in the area.
Great public course
Private course layout and conditions in a muni (but priced like a top tier private course).Great value on Golfnow but worth the full price.A definite "must" play.
