Laurel Hill Golf Club has some of the best conditions of any public course in the area, which is why it is popular amongst the locals. It is hard to believe that the club sits where the DC Department of Corrections facility at Lorton used to be located. The layout has a traditional design, but unlike older golf courses it runs a lengthy 7,102 yards from the back tees. The greens are lightning fast and undulating. There is defined contouring throughout the course, which allows for some interesting holes. Although the fairways are wide open they are still punishing towards errant shots. There are dramatic elevation changes throughout the golf course, making a flat lie nearly impossible to find. The course provides a formidable test for even the most seasoned players.

Good Course, but overpriced

Very nice course. The staff was also incredibly friendly, helpful, and flexible. There also was a relatively good pace of play.

That said, the course is quite pricey for a municipal course. If I hadn't received a big discount, I never would have played the course.

Rushed

This is the first time I played this course even though I drive by it daily and have always wanted to play it but was unwilling to pay the ridiculous green fees for a public, county course. Scheduled through GOLF NOW and got a reasonable rate. Course is magnificent, plays long, in great shape, extremly challenging. Several blind holes. Golf assistants travel the course to make sure you are playing in accordance with the time limits per hole posted on your cart. Assistants and staff are very courteous but you feel like you are being watched and pushed on every hole. If your pace of play is not what the group behind you thinks it should be they complain. At the end of 18 we (Foursome who had never played the course before) were 7 minutes beyond the projected completion time. If you don't mind being watched, monitored , and pushed along this course is for you, not for me. Not a good experience.

Playing slow does not just impact the group behind you, it impacts every group following you. The allotted 4.5 hour pace (as clearly posted on every cart - with intervals every three holes to keep you on pace) is more than adequate. Finishing over 4.5 hours is not acceptable. I'm just disappointed the Marshalls didn't do more to "push" you along.

Beautiful but very challenging

Definitely a tough track even playing from the middle tees. Top notch practice facility with everything you would need to sharpen your skills. I wouldn't really recommend playing this course if you are new to the game of golf but it is a must play for any links golf enthusiast.

5 STAR COURSE -- MUST PLAY IN THE DMV

WOW! First time playing Laurel Hill and definitely WONT be the last. Amazing layout, one of the best in the area. Definitely some memorable holes. I wouldn't say the course conditions were pristine, but very close to that. Amazing track, cant wait to play again.

Worth it.

I was in D.C. on business and wanted to play some courses in the area so this is one that was rated high on GOLFNOW. After playing the course I can see why. It was is fantastic condition and the look and the history that the course has was great. It is defiantly a risk reward course and if your going to play it I would suggest looking at some pictures or at least an aerial shot. Some holes will fool you but they all have a great look. Loved the course.

Great course and incredible value on GolfNow for weekday twilight rate. Very difficult, must keep it in the wide fairways. In great shape as the prep for us amateur links championship.

The Perfect Friday

Laurel Hill is one of the nicest public courses in the area. The course is in really good condition considering all of the rain we had earlier in the week. Pace of play was good, a little windy but just the perfect day to get a Friday afternoon round in with my buddies. The food and drink cart lady was especially nice since she took our food order went back to the club house, got our food, and brought it back out to us! Very nice since we were starving.

Yankee fan

What an outstanding facility. Great service and friendly staff. Course in outstanding condition for this time of year. Very appealing visually. Fairway carries make it interesting and requires good T shots. Greens in great condition and well protected by incredible bunkers which my playing partner spent a lot of time in (LOL). Weather was poor with very high winds adding to the difficulty of the course. Look forward to playing again with more favorable conditions.

Great fair test of golf

For the middle of April the course was in great condition, and even though the greens had been recently air rated they still ran true. This course is long but it is very fair. If you hit good shots you will be rewarded and you will be penalized for poor ones. The fairways are wide and generous, and it's needed for a course of this length. It's not nearly as tough as everyone makes it out to be, but it is a blast to play. I will be back!

Wanna go back without snow

Played with a big storm bearing down so the course was wide open for the front nine. Got stuck behind the only foursome on the entire course on the back nine that refused to let me play through. Kind of lame when it's 35 degrees. I figure most people will play on an average day though so I have no idea what pace of play would normally be like.

Course was in great shape and the greens rolled really true. I just wish I could have played it without the sleet and snow bearing down on the last five holes. It's just a little pricey for regular play.

Winter golf in NoVa

Got out and played on a hot deal the first day after the course was reopened following the snow. Stsaff was friendly, and the course played fine. I think I was one of two singles out on the 18, so not sure if the pace was a realistic measure. Will be back in the future definitely!

Fantastic course; not at Bushwood, Sir!

You can't knock anything here with regards to design or maintenance. If you want game testing firmness/fastness, then you will certainly find it at Laurel Hill. And, in my estimation, you won't find two greater holes than 9 and 14 in the entire state.

The problem with Laurel Hill is the all encompassing elitism that pervades here. With the exception of the maintenance staff and food service staff, the employees and volunteers certainly exhibit the sense of entitlement seldom seen since the downturn of the golf economy.

10 years ago, it wasn't uncommon to see a shop pro or starter put on airs of superiority. But now, while most courses have made sweeping adjustments to encourage growth of the golf landscape, here is a county course that seems to be stuck in it's own ugly past.

I will continue to golf Laurel Hill, solely due to what the golf course offers. It's a shame that such a fantastic layout doesn't have to play by the same rules as many other local offerings, because I have personally rediscovered some less attractive courses due to their renewed emphasis on PR.

Superb/Excellent

This course impresses me every time I play it. The fairways are well kept and the greens are fast and tricky. The bunkers were redone and are in perfect condition. I have never seen it in bad shape ever! It is a great place for tournaments and it is by far the best course in Northern Virginia.
