Good course but needs some maintenance
Good course with some interesting holes / some generic holes - will be easy for the long hitters but not so easy for us mere mortals - well worth a visit with some good scenery and wildlife on show in the wetlands around the park. Rating would have been 5 stars but for some very slow play over the first 9 holes that frustrated our group and the group behind us. Also the tee boxes and aprons / greens weren't in great condition - some of the aprons need re-seeding to sort out bare patches (a temporary ban on buggies might help restore some of the grass) and the greens need some attention to get rid of pock marks and worm casts which made putting a bit of a lottery. Distance pegs that appear to have been buried in small pits on some of the tee boxes are odd and are a nuisance in some instances.
Ruined by overcrowding.
Our game was ruined by there being far too many players on the course. From the 3rd tee onwards we waited on every tee. From the 9th hole there were 2 groups waiting on the tees. We were caught up by a 4 ball who seemed to enjoy hitting balls at us. 8 minutes tee times is ridiculous on a course that busy. We walked off from the 16th tee.
The course itself is good with wide fairways but if you do go into the rough it's long and you probably won't find your ball. There is plenty of ball collecting lakes as well. The online cost of £18 is very attractive and if you don't mind taking forever to play your round then go for it. Personally it's not for us.
Tough course
Course in great condition even though we've had quite a lot of rain.
Quite a challenging course and even though fairways are wide took a bit of getting to grips with.
Staff very friendly and efficient.Easy book in and instructions given.
Clubhouse very nice and bar staff friendly.
Very Nice Course
We found the course in very good condition considering the recent wet weather. The layout is good with a few hazards but not as much water as The Lakes course. Longhirst Hall is in a great location with two fantastic courses with plenty of interest and challenge for any golfer
Very highly recommended
Longhirst has to be one of the best clubs I’ve played at so far. I’ve played The Dawson Course here several times now and I’m already planning a return visit and potential membership based on my recent experiences here. A must for anyone in the local area
Afternoon round
Bar the wind, conditions were very good . Fairways and greens in great condition.
Great value and our 4 ball had plenty of time on each hole. We all enjoyed the round.
Such a beautiful course
Played off the reds and they was perfect, really well payed out course
Course is looking good
The Dawson course is in great condition other than lots of swan and goose ‘waste’ but that is unavoidable unless the birds are chased off the course which should never happen.
Pace of play was not the greatest as groups were slowed by a two ball not interested in letting a quicker group play through (a four ball was moving faster than the two ball). Sad but true!
Great value for money though and the clubhouse bar is well equipped!
Dawson course
Great value . Great course . Challenging the further into the course you get. Staff excellent & friendly. Will be back.
Just a bit rough
The course looked and played well however there were a lot of burn off near the greens. I wouldn't of expected it so early in the summer. The greens themselves were in good nick and rolled ok.
On a negative note we hired a buggy which was £25, this broke down halfway around the course. We called the clubhouse who said they'd find a green keeper and call back. That call never so I called back to be told we just had to abandon the buggy and no one was available to bring us a replacement! Not the best with heavy trolley bags and an imminent hip replacement.
I've since emailed and rang for a refund which was refused by the bookings office. I complained again and was told management woukd be in touch, guess what? Radio Silence :-(

return visit organised for you.

Lovely course
Great course set in some lovely surroundings, a few of the tee boxes could do with some work but other than that it was spot on. Club house and beer garden is perfect with a good pint selection on offer, will be back to play again!
Would recomemd
Great course, second time playing here. Great layout with some challenging holes with well placed hazards and long par 3. It was a quiet day when I played so no slow play and I got round in 3 hours. It was such a shame that they were sanding the greens so all the greens had a thick layer of sand making putting incredibly difficult. Other than that the course was in good condition
No winter greens
One of the few courses in the area that had full greens open due to recent bad weather but they were in great condition for the time of year.
Nice golf course
Fairways were absolutely sodden. Course should not have been open for play due to water logged fairways
Hi u277826520, I am a member at this club and ive got to say your review is somewhat unfair it makes no sense to rate a course 1 star due to slowplay you probably just got unlucky with the particular day and time on which you played - Usually things are nice and relaxed out on course.
