Well maintained course, good challenge and a good nature walk
21/10/16 13:10 Friday - Beautiful, autumnal, sunny day, 11 degrees
Summary
Well maintained course, good challenge and a good nature walk
Managed to get a hot deal £17 a head including fee, definitely a bargain
Location and wildlife
The course is leased from Wharncliffe estate which means it is surrounded by trees and hence wildlife. At this time of year there's an abundance of pheasants, squirrels and even the odd stoat
Course Layout
The course is well laid out with only a couple of points where it is advisory to hold off from teeing due to proximity to other holes - no holes cross one another or feel dangerously close. The woodland is very mature but the holes are not excessively tight so you are not overly punished unless you hook or slice severely. The holes are laid out across a hillside and some have significant rise or fall from tee to pin, you will notice walking particularly if you are carrying!
Condition
The course was in great condition considering recent rain. It was clear that the greens keepers had been extremely busy (many were working as we went round). There may have been a recent or upcoming competition as clear fencing and markings were out for GUR wherever the course was too soft.
Difficulty
This course has a good variety of distance, elevation and obstructions to make it interesting and challenging for me as an irregular, high teens golfer.
Members, facilities
There were precious few people on the course but those we met were friendly. The facilities are all in good order, and food is good value. One drawback is that the practice area is a bit of a trek
Great location
Excellent course apart from the greens had recently been hollow tined leaving the surface very bumpy.
Would have been nice to have known this before I booked as it took away the enjoyment of play this course.
4 seasons
Booked in with ease with the professional. Course in very good condition, greens had been top dressed but we're very true and good to putt on. The round took a little longer than expected due to a hail storm, snow and rain. Would love to return later in year when weather and greens in top condition but overall excellent value.
Course was in great condition apart from all the greens which still showed signs of hollow tining making them very bumpy to put on.
No info about this when I booked the round.
