Lots of improvement
Have not been to Redwood Canyon for some time as the course was going down hill under the prior ownership. New owners are working hard to improve the course and are making real progress. Still has a way to go but a great value for the money.
Fun / pretty / short course
Not a major golf challenge, but a fun and pretty course. A nice walk with a little golf thrown in. The holes are short. If you are on your game and hitting straight, you can play a lot of wedges to greens. Course is in sort of not great shape right now. A lot of very thin grass (meaning dirt/clay/mud patches showing through - probably they have had to cut back on watering) all over the course and the greens are kind of bumpy, which I think is normal. But it is a pleasant place to be and it's cheap, and some of the holes are very pretty and even interesting, so you just accept it for what it is.
Has potential.
Hadn't played there since it was Willow Park. Kid in the pro shop was very abrupt and discourteous. Seemed like he didn't want to be there. Fairways were pretty shoddy; needed to bump the ball out of the hardpan. Greens were a little bumpy and could have been rolled. Some of them were still unfair; severely crowned and the pin placements made it even more difficult, with the ball rolling off after a putt. A lot of the sand traps could have used some more sand. Sometimes hitting off clay. ( I know, shouldn't have been there in the first place ). While waiting for the group in front of us on the 10th tee, witnessed a flier from the 18th fairway hit the golfer on the tee box in the face. Could use some more screens to prevent that.
Management of pro shop
Booked a tee time at 07:22 am though golfnow and arrived at 07:00 am . The pro shop was closed until 08:00 am. Wasted our time.
Greens were plugged and sanded
Greens were plugged . would have liked to have been informed before I booked the tee time
Much better than before
Although course being remodeled course is kept in good shape greens are nicely manicured and an overall challenging outing it might need a few more improvements but progress is shown.
Tight short course.
Fun, nice setting, Short course, but challenging .
Challenge for the Hackers
Every course we go to these days has brown fairways and empty water features - no different here. "Average" conditions from that standpoint. Clubhouse staff and Marshalls were very friendly...pace of play was excellent. In and Out in about 4 hours and we walked it.
The "poor" rating for Food/Bev - there was no drink cart at all. We played from 8am to Noon on a Saturday, 90 degrees by the 13th hole and I would have paid $20 for a gatorade at that point. Nobody came by all day. Only course I've played in the Bay Area like that, so was disappointed.
Great spread of Par 3's, 4's and 5's...very narrow so hackers like me better take a dozen balls.
Overall, well worth the $45 or so to play 18.
Work in Progress
Substantial improve tad to the tee boxes have made the course more playable. Farr too many barren spots in the fairways are hopefully on the near term agenda. I can give them a pass for another year then reassess. Beware that you will play winter rules unt then!
Nice Little Course
Conditions were beautiful: perfect weather, moderate crowd, great company. Picked this course due to its short length - I forgot how unforgiving it can be though! You gotta keep the ball in play - the creeks throughout will swallow any errand shots. The drought has made itself evident on some of the fairways. The crews were working hard to mitigate this though. All in all though a very enjoyable round.
This is a great location but course is in ragged condition
the course has large dry patches and all but the best shots end up in the creek which runs through the course. Balls in anything outside the playing area are not likely to be found. Better to leave any club in your bag that does not promote accuracy. The sand traps could use some fresh, soft sand. I hit out of a couple that felt like well-used cart paths!
Much Improved
They are doing a good job in improving the condition of the golf course..
Good Value
For the Golf Now price, well worth playing. Tee boxes and fairways are not in very good shape, blame it on the drought. Greens were very good. Rough cart path. Weekday around Noon, very few other golfers out there.
Could be a lot better
Greens were decent but the overall condition of the course was bad. Fairways were super dry and weeds with patchy grass and dirt everywhere. It was cheap to play so couldn't complain but not a very nice course. Hopefully the new owners will put some money into it and fix it up because the location is awesome and it has great potential.
work in progress
Excellent value for the money. Will recommend it to friends. You don't have to be a long hitter, but keep it straight.
A course in transition
Once one of the favorite places for celebrities like the rat pack, this beautiful course is currently in management limbo while the non golfing county politicians decide when will the facility be assigned a permanent semblance of what once was.
That said, the course still plays fair, requiring accurate driving and ball placement.
Significent improvement
This course has improved dramatically over prior ownership. There still is a ways to go but current ownership has gotten a very good start. Keep up the good work.
Narrow is the way, a few find it
This course is being improved by new management team and improvements are welcomed. The course is narrow in many places with lots of trees on one side, with a small creek on the other side of the fairway. You will see lots of wild life as you play the course, fun yet challenging course.
Probably a Better Experience on a Weekday
Teed off a half an hour late, why? Because they do not have enough carts so groups (multiple) had to wait until other players returned their carts. Pace of play was ponderous. 5 hours and 20 minutes. Greens played as it they hadn't been cut in a week - sloooow. And what are called on most courses sand traps, Willow Creek features dirt traps. The experience would have been better on a weekday, however, that wouldn't change the greens or traps.
Better than some reviews suggest. Will be back in the future.
I used to come here 10-20 years ago playing back-9 mostly. Used to love the serene and secluded setting.
I was looking for an ad-hoc 4-some golf Sat at 9:00 am, and Redwood Canyon had an opening. Read the reviews, was a bit hesitant, but decided to go because as we golfers know, it is better to golf than not golfing - if you know what I mean.
And I was pleasantly surprised. Yes there is work going on. Workers were redoing the roof of all the structures. They now have electric carts. I could tell the management is looking to update the facility to bring it up the standard.
Yes there were some bare spots, but those were mostly between the holes and in the parts of the course that really does not matter. And the greens were in very good shape. I've seen some greens in more expensive courses, and I think the greens at RC is fine and well maintained.
Was the first time walking the 18 hole, using my newly purchased push cart. good experience. Lot of shades. The setting is really secluded and serene. It is actually quite a beautiful course.
Probably because I shot my personal best today (80), I had a good time here today, and will definitely put RC in my rotation.
