Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation
About
The 18-hole Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina is a public golf course that opened in 1994. Designed by Tim Cate, Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation measures 7089 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 140 and a 73.7 USGA rating. The course features 4 sets of tees for different skill levels. The greens are bent and the fairways are bermuda.
Panther's Run was born to be a different kind of challenge than Lion's Paw. Golf course designer Tim Cate has unleashed this cat to prowl along the edge of a natural preserve and continually tests your ability to stay out of, or hit over, the surrounding marsh land. Wide fairways that twist and turn with a variety of elevations, plus scenic water features blend perfectly.
The front nine picks its way through hardwood forest while the back nine is more open. The course is laid out along the edge of a natural preserve and tests golfers' ability to negotiate the surrounding marsh land and water. The fairways twist and turn and show a variety of elevations, as much as 60 feet in fact.

Horrible conditions
This course needs significant attention. This was the only course in my life that had more crabgrass than actual grass.
Great course layout but poor greens
The course layout is challenging and very pretty visually. Fairways are wide and in good shape. Don’t get in the rough here and if you do, club down at least one club. The average golfer can play this course and enjoy it. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Now the not so good parts. At least 2/3rds of the greens have damage, some significant. We played several greens with a 2 putt rule because of the awful conditions. The tee boxes had crabgrass and had a thick layer of grass that needed to be cut. Fuzzy tee boxes. Overall I’d like to give the course a 4 but with these two conditions, it’s a 3, average. I do understand the extreme heat conditions are challenging so my advice is to tell golfers the true conditions.
Horrible greens
I used to look forward to playing this course every time I visit Myrtle Beach. What a huge disappointment. I will not return. The conditions were horrible and the greens were pathetic. I wouldn’t pay $20 for this course. Pace of play was awful. What a shame. I have crossed ocean ridge plantation off of my list.
Greens are in need of repari
Greens were not in good shape, I've played here in the past and this is worst I've ever seen them.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Panther's Run. Your round was played during a period of extensive summer work on the greens (the rates were discounted for this purpose) and they were defintitely not at their best. Fortunately, the hard work has paid off and the greens are now recovering nicely and will be in very good condition as we move through the remainder of 2023 and beyond. WE hope you will visit us again and see our continued progress.
Great fairways terrible greens (Panthers Run)
I’ve heard rumors in the past about the courses at oceans ridge. I wanted to get out and play as early as possible and panthers run fit the bill for this day.
This review is lengthy, but is comprehensive. Note: this was one of my best rounds of the year (89 from the Whites).
Directions (google):
GPS directions may take you to the cart pick up/return area. There is no signage at this turn to tell you otherwise. Not a big deal, just unfortunate. The bag drop attendant informed me where to go after dropping off my bag.
Staff:
Bag attendant friendly and polite. Check-in/behind the desk also friendly and polite. However, neither people informed me about the condition of the course, other than the 90 degree rule.
Putting green:
This was the first sign of trouble. The putting green had just finished being water when I arrived (slightly before 7am). I give the putting green a rating of 1/5. Saying it is “patchy” would be nice. There’s only a handful of spots you can roll putts from without having to putt through damage or areas of missing grass. At best you could get maybe a 10-15ft putt in. If more than 3 people where on the green, it wouldn’t be worth it. I rolled maybe 5 putts and said “not even worth it”. The speed of the putting green did not match those on the course.
Course:
Tee boxes: Most where in good shape. Some needed to be mowed a little tighter. Most important (to me) is they were mostly flat.
Fairways: Were in great shape. Well kept with minimal damage and no burnt out areas. Best part of the course by far.
Bunkers: I understand there was a good amount of rain the few days and night before. However, there was little to no sand to speak of in the bunkers. They were mostly mud and very compact. Some bunkers even had “holes” from the rainfall (I found a ball in one of these said holes).
Greens: To be brutally honest, all 18 greens had some sort of “damage” to them. Multiple areas of the green had significant portions of where ZERO grass was growing. 90% of the time you had to putt through these areas, which made the putt nearly impossible to read. At one point I considered doing an “automatic 2 putt” rule since they were that bad, but decided to play it as it lies.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Panther's Run. We agree, the greens were far from their best on the date of your visit, but we have just completed a very extensive restoration procedure that will have them in very good condition once again very soon and for the long term after. We hope you will visit us again and see our continued improvement.
You know it’s bad news when the guy taking your money at the pro shop starts with we’re gonna give you a discount. Greens on the first nine were terrible, better but far from great on the second nine. Fairways were good and the staff was great. Have played all 4 courses at this club before, always a good time. If they offer a discount before you play, they for sure know you’re not gonna be happy. Would have appreciated knowing they were having issues with the greens before booking.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Panther's Run. We apologize the greens were not at their best on this visit. We just completed an extensive renovation of these putting surfaces and they are now improving daily and will be in very good condition again soon. We hope you will visit us again and see our continued progress..

FIX THE GREENS
Greens were horrible. Damaged and very bumpy. were told a lot were fixed by starter but every green had bad spots.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Panther's Run. We apologize we did not meet your expectations on this visit. We are currently in the process of an extensive greens renovation project that will see these putting surfaces restored to their former glory very soon. The playing conditions are getting better daily and will be in very good overall condition soon. We hope you will visit us again and see our progress.
Disappointed
Staff very friendly, but course very disappointing, mostly due to conditions of green. Pro shop gentleman reduced greens fees by $10 and said greens had “some damage”. That was an understatement. Some greens had some large spots with bare dirt that was hardened like concrete. Other spots were so sparse that there was more dirt than grass. Forget trying to read a putt.Bunkers not in great shape, and some were hard pan. Tees not in great shape, but at least on-course restrooms smelled good. Likely never going there again. Nothing personal, just very poor conditions.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Panther's Run. We apologize we were unable to meet your expectations on this visit. We have been dealing with a series of unexpected issues in recent weeks that have temporarily impacted our greens. Fortunately, they will be healing quickly and will be getting better daily and will be in very good condition again soon. We hope you will visit us again soon and see our improvement.
Greens under repair but great course
Greens are under repair and very bad condition. Fairways and tees are in great shape. It’s a beautiful course. Had a great time. Staff was very nice and helpful.
Greens were awful
Course staff gave us 1/2 off our booking price (thank goodness)! Tee boxes looked great, fairways were solid, but the greens were the worst I have EVER putted on. Greens were 0/10, hated we had to play on them.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Panther's Run. We apologize we were unable to meet you expectations on this visit. We have been hit with a series of unexpected issues in recent weeks that have temporarily impacted our greens. Fortunately, they will be healing quickly and will be getting better daily and will be in very good condition again soon. We hope you will visit us again soon and see our improvement.
The greens on this course were in poor condition
The fairways were in good condition, but the greens were terrible. The staff apologized before the round and told us they had lost the greens over the past few months. I feel like this will be a good course once they get the greens fixed.
Thank you for taking the time to review your round at Panther's Run. Yes, the conditions you described are very much temporary and related to a few unexpected factors. With improving weather conditions, the greens will also be rapidly improving. We are also taking extensive measures to prevent any similar occurrence in the future.
Poor Greens
Would be a good course if the greens were in better shape. Greens are bumpy, mottled and ball cannot roll true. Hope it improves in future.
A disappointment
A fine layout, a good place usually but greens in bad condition - almost impossible
We sincerely apologize for the unsatisfactory conditions you described in your review. We have been working very hard to alleviate these issues, and these greens have shown great improvement in the time since your round was played. We fully expect them to be back in good condition in the very near future. If your group was not offered one of the several options our staff has been instructed to provide our guests to help make amends for this temporary condition, please let me know and we will work with your group any way necessary to find a satisfactory outcome. My email is blong@oceanridge.com. Thank you.
Normally a fine place.- but greens in bad shape
This is course, and its siblings, always offer a fun round when we are down at the beach. But this round was disappointing- so many of the greens were in terrible condition. Bumpy, with burned out places, lots of brown and dried spots. Hope they can recover.
We deeply apologize for the conditions you described in your review. Due to an unforeseen set of circumstances, the bermuda greens on Panther's Run did struggle for a period of time. We have very aggressively treated all the conditions related to these issues and, fortunately, the greens have made great strides since your round was played. We fully expect these greens to be in very good condition as we move through the end of spring and into the summer months. I am assuming your group was offered one of the several options our staff has been instructed to make available to our guests during this temporary setback. If that was not the case, please contact me directly at blong@oceanridge.com and we will work with your group anyway necessary to find a suitable and satisfactory resolution to your concerns. We apologize for this inconvenience and we are looking forward to the opportunity to show you our great progress.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Panther's Run. We apologize we fell short of your expectations on this trip. The course has undergone extensive renovation in the past few weeks and is improving daily. Crabgrass, while never completely eradicated form a golf course or lawn, is at a relative minimum on all of our courses due to the heavy treatment over the past two years with various selective pre and post emergent herbicides. We hope you will visit us again and see our continued improvement.
