Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation
About
The 18-hole Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina is a public golf course that opened in 1994. Designed by Tim Cate, Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation measures 7089 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 140 and a 73.7 USGA rating. The course features 4 sets of tees for different skill levels. The greens are bent and the fairways are bermuda.
Panther's Run was born to be a different kind of challenge than Lion's Paw. Golf course designer Tim Cate has unleashed this cat to prowl along the edge of a natural preserve and continually tests your ability to stay out of, or hit over, the surrounding marsh land. Wide fairways that twist and turn with a variety of elevations, plus scenic water features blend perfectly.
The front nine picks its way through hardwood forest while the back nine is more open. The course is laid out along the edge of a natural preserve and tests golfers' ability to negotiate the surrounding marsh land and water. The fairways twist and turn and show a variety of elevations, as much as 60 feet in fact.

Terrible conditions
This course is in awful condition. This course is the worst conditioned course in the surrounding area. The fairways are full of crab grass as well as the tee boxes. Many of the greens have pot holes and play like crap. Ive never seen a fairway so poor. I felt like i was playing on a closed course or one that went out of business. Many of the ocean ridge community has taken their business elsewhere and are not happy with the overall conditions of the cat courses in the neighborhood. I can only speak for this one but I can see what they mean. Meadowlands, crow creek, and sandpiper to name a few are much better places to play and more reasonably priced. This course is premium prices for awful conditions.
Not bad
The course gets terrible ratings but I had a good time. The sand traps weren’t raked and some of the rough wasnt mowed, not sure if there is a lack of staffing. Greens were rolling true 7/10 and fairways were good. It’s clear that the revenue managers are trying to capture higher rates for walkins because it was dead when we played. Probably giving too many discounts to memberships which hurts the regular transient rates. This course would clean up at $35 until 12 and $20 after noon. We tried to replay 9 and quoted $27. This is too high.
What happened
I play Panther’s Run years ago, I thought it was a beautiful course. My recent visit was very discouraging. The course has deteriorated to point of almost unplayable . The rough, although recently cut with the grass clippings all over the place were still 6 inches deep. Half of the greens needed serious work..
What happened
I’ve played this course years ago, I was very impressed. This time I was very impressed, but for the wrong reasons. The rough was recently cut. That must’ve been a foot high with amount of grass they left on the shoulder. There was crabgrass in the fairways and greens were bumpy. Very sad to see this course so rundown.
We apologize we were unable to meet your expectation on your most recent visit to Panther's Run. We did have some explosive growth of grass due to heavy rains prior to your date of play, which makes it difficult to get the mowers out to some of the areas on the course. We had the World Am tournament on two of our other courses that day, so it took some time to get the blowers over to Panther's Run, to blow off the clippings. Fortunately this has all been caught up and the course is mowed out very nicely now. We hope you will visit us again and see our continued progress.
Good Valued Course
Played Tigers Paw a few days before this, and enjoyed it more. Panther was a little banged up, many bald spots on the green. A lot of grass clippings too, might’ve just be unlucky on the day we played.
Last Round
I try to play this course ant the other cat courses each time I visit the Myrtle Beach area. In the past the courses have been great. What a huge disappointment this time around. Rotted out greens. Three groups on one hole. This will be my last round at Ocean Ridge Plantation. You would think Golfnow would warn us before we paid for this course in lousy condition. Shame on you. My last year with Golfpass as well.
We are happy to hear that you are a long time visitor of the Big Cats courses and that you have always been greatly satisfied with your experience in the past;. We deeply apologize this was not the case on your last visit, as indicated by the two negative reviews posted for your one round of golf on Panther's Run. This course is in the process of undergoing some extensive renovations and was not at its best during your visit. Our prices have been dramatically reduced to allow for this inconvenience and each guest is told in advance of playing and given the opportunity to play one of the other Big Cats, if preferred. Fortunately the greens on Panther's have leapt to life over the past couple of weeks and are in much better overall condition now, so this should not be an issue going forward. We hope you will visit us again and give us the opportunity to provide the same great conditions you have always experienced at Ocean Ridge.
Horrible conditions
This course needs significant attention. This was the only course in my life that had more crabgrass than actual grass.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Panther's Run. We apologize we fell short of your expectations on this trip. The course has undergone extensive renovation in the past few weeks and is improving daily. Crabgrass, while never completely eradicated form a golf course or lawn, is at a relative minimum on all of our courses due to the heavy treatment over the past two years with various selective pre and post emergent herbicides. We hope you will visit us again and see our continued improvement.
Great course layout but poor greens
The course layout is challenging and very pretty visually. Fairways are wide and in good shape. Don’t get in the rough here and if you do, club down at least one club. The average golfer can play this course and enjoy it. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Now the not so good parts. At least 2/3rds of the greens have damage, some significant. We played several greens with a 2 putt rule because of the awful conditions. The tee boxes had crabgrass and had a thick layer of grass that needed to be cut. Fuzzy tee boxes. Overall I’d like to give the course a 4 but with these two conditions, it’s a 3, average. I do understand the extreme heat conditions are challenging so my advice is to tell golfers the true conditions.
Horrible greens
I used to look forward to playing this course every time I visit Myrtle Beach. What a huge disappointment. I will not return. The conditions were horrible and the greens were pathetic. I wouldn’t pay $20 for this course. Pace of play was awful. What a shame. I have crossed ocean ridge plantation off of my list.
Greens are in need of repari
Greens were not in good shape, I've played here in the past and this is worst I've ever seen them.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Panther's Run. Your round was played during a period of extensive summer work on the greens (the rates were discounted for this purpose) and they were defintitely not at their best. Fortunately, the hard work has paid off and the greens are now recovering nicely and will be in very good condition as we move through the remainder of 2023 and beyond. WE hope you will visit us again and see our continued progress.
Great fairways terrible greens (Panthers Run)
I’ve heard rumors in the past about the courses at oceans ridge. I wanted to get out and play as early as possible and panthers run fit the bill for this day.
This review is lengthy, but is comprehensive. Note: this was one of my best rounds of the year (89 from the Whites).
Directions (google):
GPS directions may take you to the cart pick up/return area. There is no signage at this turn to tell you otherwise. Not a big deal, just unfortunate. The bag drop attendant informed me where to go after dropping off my bag.
Staff:
Bag attendant friendly and polite. Check-in/behind the desk also friendly and polite. However, neither people informed me about the condition of the course, other than the 90 degree rule.
Putting green:
This was the first sign of trouble. The putting green had just finished being water when I arrived (slightly before 7am). I give the putting green a rating of 1/5. Saying it is “patchy” would be nice. There’s only a handful of spots you can roll putts from without having to putt through damage or areas of missing grass. At best you could get maybe a 10-15ft putt in. If more than 3 people where on the green, it wouldn’t be worth it. I rolled maybe 5 putts and said “not even worth it”. The speed of the putting green did not match those on the course.
Course:
Tee boxes: Most where in good shape. Some needed to be mowed a little tighter. Most important (to me) is they were mostly flat.
Fairways: Were in great shape. Well kept with minimal damage and no burnt out areas. Best part of the course by far.
Bunkers: I understand there was a good amount of rain the few days and night before. However, there was little to no sand to speak of in the bunkers. They were mostly mud and very compact. Some bunkers even had “holes” from the rainfall (I found a ball in one of these said holes).
Greens: To be brutally honest, all 18 greens had some sort of “damage” to them. Multiple areas of the green had significant portions of where ZERO grass was growing. 90% of the time you had to putt through these areas, which made the putt nearly impossible to read. At one point I considered doing an “automatic 2 putt” rule since they were that bad, but decided to play it as it lies.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Panther's Run. We agree, the greens were far from their best on the date of your visit, but we have just completed a very extensive restoration procedure that will have them in very good condition once again very soon and for the long term after. We hope you will visit us again and see our continued improvement.
Thank you so much for the awesome Five Star review of Panther's Run. We appreciate your patronage and feedback. Be sure to check out the other three Big Cats courses as well. Thanks again!
