Oyster Bay Golf Links, in Sunset Beach near Calabash, N.C., opened in 1983, a precursor to the Grand Strand's first true, golf course building boom.

Oyster Bay Golf Links, another classic creation by Developer Larry Young and Architect Dan Maples, is a rare blend of the various philosophies of golf course architecture.

Oyster Bay is one of the most beautiful and diversified courses to be found anywhere. It is located in Sunset Beach, NC just minutes North of its predecessor, Marsh Harbour.

"The real story is that Oyster Bay is still one of the must-plays of Myrtle Beach," a TravelGolf.com reviewer said. "The haunting layout on the shores of Twin Lakes has a collection of holes that are as well-conceived and scenery-soaked as any in the Grand Strand."

The par-70 course is just under 6,700 yards and has two island green par 3s. The course does show some signs of its age, including the clubhouse, the range with its beat-up ball machine, and the greens are old-fashioned Bermuda known for being slow.

Course was dry

Course was dry. Sparse grass on tees and greens mowed improperly leaving brown areas and uneven grass height.

Over Priced

Over the years, I have played Oyster Bay. Extremely challenging course but with conditions of the course Saturday May 3, it played harder. The fairways were very poor with some type of mulch on top and the tee boxes were either burnt out or not taken care. The Greens were the only positive of the round. Might have to drop this one from our upcoming trips.

Underwhelming

It is a great layout, but I was very disappointed with the course conditions. I know it is early in the season, but some poor fairways. Bad lies throughout the 18, moreso on the back 9. Greens discolored, but putted well. It was cool to see multiple alligators!

Oyster Bay

Course needs some tender love and care. Cart paths are terrible, sand traps need some sand and work, most greens need improvement. Played in early spring (April 01).

From a Local Golfer - Avoid this course until improvements made

Great Layout, unfortunately the conditions are pitiful compared to other courses in the area. Management either needs to adjust pricing to reflect conditions, or bring the course up to warrant what they’re charging. Many other courses in the area that are a much better value.

Oyster bay

Definitely not worth the cost to play. Patchy greens, cart paths need work, not well manicured.

course was in good condition, no Tee box signs about the hole. Pace of play was a little slow. Absolutely did not like waiting till our tee time to get to load up our gear in the cart, I'm sorry that should have been available to us right after we checked in. Lastly a little confusion with employees on where we where to start from, one person told us 10 and another said one, very confusing. Most likely wont play there again.

Nice layout bad maintance

They were 30 plus minutes behind to begin the round. Guy loading the bags and getting us started was a former police officer and he acted like it.

Pace of play was poor. Never saw a ranger after the turn until 15. Approached us and asked us to play a scramble to speed up play. No thought of the fact there were groups in front of us. Where were we going to go. Two groups in front of us then open holes. No pressure on them to pick up pace of play.

They just wanted us off the course asap.

Poor condition

Sadly disappointed with the condition of the course. Cary paths beat us up in the carts, too many foursomes within a short period of time, so we waited a lot. Gave up after four hours and only 14 holes, pictures on site are clearly photo shopped.

Not what we expected

Our first time in Myrtle Beach and this was the 5th different course we played. It came highly recommended by a couple of golf buddies.

With that being said we were very excited to play this course.

When we arrived at the bag drop, keep in mind it was only 920am or so, one of the guys acted like we were bothering him, and he appeared frustrated. The gentleman inside was much more welcoming and we appreciated that. Course was in decent to fair conditions. Green speed varied from hole to hole, which made putting more difficult than it had to be. Last but most importantly, we seen the beverage cart 1 time! The cart had very little options, no variety of beers or non alcoholic drinks. And that was on hole 3-4!

Then 3+ hours later she came by to bring a few cups of water! (That’s after we called to the pro shop to ask about the cart!) She said she closed out already and had no beer or any other beverages! At 2pm? Really? In this temperature and humidity? That makes no sense. Seems like everyone just wanted to go home. I would recommend playing there if you take your own cooler and drinks! Also to try and catch a glimpse of some gators!

Not what it once was

Our group has played Oyster Bay many times and always ranked it among our favorites. Something has changed. It seems like it either has new owners, is running out of money, or the owners just don't care anymore. During our recent trip the pace was slow, causing us to wait on every shot, without a ranger in site to speed up the group in front of us. They were more interested in drinking beer and smoking cigars than playing golf. The conditions of the course were the worst we have ever seen them. Bunkers were a mess and unraked. The carts paths have pot holes in them like the surface of the moon. What is going on?
