Grand Canyon University Golf Course
About
Grand Canyon University Golf Course (formerly known as Maryvale Municipal Golf Course) offers an 18-hole track designed by Ted Robinson, Sr. and built in 1961. The par-71 golf course measures 7,269 yards from the championship tees and is open year-round.
The Bermuda grass Grand Canyon University Golf Course gets plenty of shade during the summer, thanks to several onsite trees, and features flat and wide fairways.
The fourth hole, for one example, is a 160-yard par-3 where you'll have to shoot over the water - and past the brick wall that separates the green from the water.

nice layout and moderately challenging
Greens were some what slow on this day, but I was told they are generally fast. definitely enjoyed playing and would recommend this course to others. staff were friendly and pace of play was acceptable for this time of the year.
Looks like it’s in summer-shape, not March-shape.
Love the course, the guys I played with have joined me for numerous rounds there, and we all agreed that the course looks like it’s late May when they’re struggling to keep it up, as opposed to a cool March when it should be in great shape. Several fairways were looking quite bare, there is not an inch of rough to be found that looks like it’s seen water in a month, and just all around not what I’ve come to expect of the course in the 6+ years I’ve been playing it. Same course in mid-June, I’d say they’re doing a great job, but in March, for $100, we all expected better.
Nice Track / Great Value
Nice course, bunkers do come into play often on drives so leaving driver in the bag may be better option. Staff very courteous and efficient
Inner city course
A good track, lots of car noise as would be expected. Was a bit slow as a tournament was going on. Anywhere off the main fairways was very hard. Greens were in good shape and the fairways were nice. Lots of sand!
Classic Layout with Abundant Bunkering
I really feel like this is a great value in the Phoenix area. Less than $100 during the week is pretty good when you are staring at $200+ greens fees all over the city. We played 2 rounds here during our trip in February.
This is a traditional layout, far from a desert feel. Fairways are mostly generous, and there are plenty of places you can find yourself in trouble. Most holes are lined by mature trees and there are a few lakes out there that will grab a ball or two.
The most notable feature of the course are the bunkers. They are huge and plentiful. Avoiding the sand here is a nearly impossible task. Many of the fairway bunkers are well placed right where you'll want to hit your tee ball, and the greensiders go deep well below the surfaces of the elevated greens. Conditions in the sandy areas were very good in most spots with a few areas having less sand than others. I feel like I played out of most of them.
GCU offers a lot of varieties of holes with a few tough par 3s and gettable par 5s. On the back nine there are some fun and relatively short par 4s. You may want to go for the green a couple times. I found myself hitting every club in the bag and loved every minute of it.
Conditions were very good. The overseed on tees, fairways and around the greens is in great condition. On days we played, the greens were in excellent shape. In a 5 day trip, GCU had the smoothest and most consistent greens we played amongst all courses.
There were really no negatives to report here. All around a solid and very fun golf course. I really enjoyed my rounds at GCU!
3.5 Stars, “Bunker City”
If there was an in between rating I would rate it a 3.5. Seemed like one thing was good, next thing was poor.
Greens rolled nice, but there was a lot of sand on them from all the bunkers around the greens which made clearing lines tedious. Fairways were in good shape, rough was a lot of dirt. Bunkers were good, carts need to be replaced.
If your desperate to golf...
The staff was amazing, the course, eh. The layout isn't bad but the conditions were not good. Greens had food coloring and were rough. This course is very noisy with roads bordering it on all 4 sides.
We were coming from Chicago and a played on the day we flew to AZ. If you're desperate to play this is something to consider.
Jim’s Review
The cart seats had open rips and foam showing through them, and the cup locations on the greens had not been changed in probably a week. The price was $135, and it was probably only worth $50. The staff had an event in the morning in the restaurant area, and it was completely closed for several hours. On a Saturday no less. GCU needs to get serious if they want to be in the golf course business.
Dangerous course
Everything is poor on that course, the layout, the conditions, the amenities, the pace, but most of all, the course is very dangerous, the fairways are too close too each other and we have seen somebody in our fairway almost every hole. The rating of that course is way too high. We hated that course.
Great day
Great time, great young people working there, only issues a few traps had a lot of sand other traps similar to playing off the cart path. With the difficulty of the green complexes there, you can’t get the ball out of the traps with no sand, the traps with too much sand were hard to rake smooth or get a lie with out a mound of sand behind the ball. Went to raking first. Or tossing the ball to an area with sand. Will be back.
the course was packed with players , we waited on every hole . Quit after 10 holes which took almost 3 hrs totally unacceptable . not going back
Too slow
7 min btw tee times just isn't fair for those trying to get an afternoon round in... Golf should not be a 5+ hour game... Never saw a player Asst/Marshall...too bad because layout and course conditions were decent
