Grand Canyon University Golf Course
About
Grand Canyon University Golf Course (formerly known as Maryvale Municipal Golf Course) offers an 18-hole track designed by Ted Robinson, Sr. and built in 1961. The par-71 golf course measures 7,269 yards from the championship tees and is open year-round.
The Bermuda grass Grand Canyon University Golf Course gets plenty of shade during the summer, thanks to several onsite trees, and features flat and wide fairways.
The fourth hole, for one example, is a 160-yard par-3 where you'll have to shoot over the water - and past the brick wall that separates the green from the water.

Great layout
The course has a great layout, but was recently aerated. The greens were a little bumpy as expected. Some bare area on the fairways.
The restaurant wasn't open until 9 a.m. Our tee time was 6:58, so we were too early.
They have a driving range and range balls aer reasonable.
Overall, it was a good experience.
Ho hum
I realize it’s summer… but the course was in really rough shape… fairways well below average and greens were recently airated so balls bounced not rolled… pace of play was well below expectations, mostly due to no staff on course to manage pace of slower groups… I will play again but wait until course is in better shape
Decent course
Enjoyed our round at GCU. Fairways were spotty in areas, but that is to be expected in the 100+ temperatures of the Phoenix area. Overall a nice course with a large amount of bunkers to increase the difficulty slightly. Bacon Avacado Chicken wrap ordered at the turn was amazing!!
Bad Timing
As a resident this course is usually immaculate. What I found on Fathers Day was the the course in the worse shape in over 5 years. Greens were bumpy, some edges of the greens lost, aprons to the green were totally lost to mud or try dirt, fairways were with large holes from plugging machine to get Bermuda to grow. Sad for the residents but the barest to play is winter months but green fee is substantially higher
Not worth it
The green fees are downright exorbitant. For what you’re paying, you’d expect pristine fairways, impeccable greens, and top-notch amenities. Unfortunately, that’s not the case here. It’s like paying for a five-star meal and getting fast-food quality.
You’ll find yourself glancing nervously at your parked car, wondering if it’ll still be there when you finish your round.
Nice afternoon!
Really enjoyed this course!
Challenging and plays well!
Greens are garbage
Still love the layout but not sure how they are hosting a college team here. The old Maryvale course had better greens than this. So bumpy and patchy and this was early in the morning so I can’t imagine how bad they are late in the day. Greenskeeper placed holes in gross chewed up spots on some holes that didn’t make sense. Aguila by comparison is by far better even when they punch their greens. The fairways are ok but near the greens they seemed overwatered. Bunkers were pretty good once dry. Wet was like hitting out of a Slurpee. If it wasn’t for the facility I don’t think I would come back.
Golfnow Misrepresented the Greens fees.
GolfNow quoted $75 per player for the round. I was charged 89 at the course.
Unfortunate
Great layout and the fairways are in pretty decent condition. The greens are in tough shape. It’ll be interesting to see if they can save them. Pace of play was ridiculous and there was no ranger on the back. 5+ hour round. Unfortunately this is close, but not worth the time or money. I’d look elsewhere…
Overt priced for the condition of the course
The course is a little rough. But not having to worry about hitting a house on an errant tee shot is great. And the sand in the bunkers is actually nice. And the course is long. But for the price, it’s a reach.
Easier than it looks
Very forgiving. No real disadvantage for missing a fairway, unless behind a tree trunk. Drives struck low roll out quite a distance. Golfers used to Georgia/Florida golf should remember to use a club or two less on approach. Overall, an enjoyable round.
Overall a good day
An excellent layout but greens a bit slow and some of the fairways and tee boxes were a bit rough in spots but not in bad shape. Overall a good day and a good challenge.
Good overall
The course was in good shape. The pace of play was complete nonsense. I left after playing the first 9 in 3.5 hours. Seen the ranger once and he didn't say a word to anyone. 7 hours for a round of golf is garbage.
Expected Better Conditions
The greens are patchy and scarring. The fairways are fine. The tee boxes are the best thing about the course. I havent played here since it was Maryvale and with GCU acquiring it i expected much better conditions. The new layout is more challenging but youre penalized on the greens as they do not roll well. Focus on the maintenance of the course and less on bag drop. Stick to the basics.
Flat and walkable course
Decent facility but gets easily backed up on some holes. 9:30 tee time was 10 minutes behind, then there were 3 groups on the second hole, a par 3. Happened a few more times for no apparent reason. On course beverage girls were stopping by regularly on a hot day. The only real negative was that the two useless greeters handing out power carts were too lazy to put sand in the divot repair bottles. One of mine was completely empty, and the second one was almost empty.
