About
Nestled at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Toiyabe Golf Club (formerly known as Thunder Canyon Country Club and Lightning "W" Ranch Golf Course.) has a picturesque landscape of shimmering lakes, meandering streams, and towering pines. This course has a traditional layout that features contoured fairways and fast, generous greens. There are nearly 50 bunkers strategically placed throughout and water comes into play on 14 holes. Elevated tees provide spectacular views of Mt. Rose and Slide Mountain. The golf course is challenging but still player-friendly with seven sets of tees. In addition to the course, Toiyabe Golf Club also offers practice facilities that include chipping and sand practice areas along with an expansive putting green.

ENJOYABLE COMPANY
The course is in excellent condition and the price was about right. The pace was extremely slow as we had to wait on every shot. I know there was a tournament, and the starter was sent on course to try and get things sped -up, but it was still painfully slow.
The course is great. I have played a couple times now where I was left as a single in between larger groups without being paired up… if I was paired with other groups, either before or after it would speed up play overall
Nice gem off beaten path

Fun but challenging!
This course is a great course but I hadn’t played it in a while. I forgot how difficult this course is. It’s beautiful and really well maintained. It’s just not a course that’s very forgiving. If you go into it with a bad attitude then it might be a tough day.
Unfortunately they had a number of groups qualifying for the Barracuda tournament and play was too slow. The managing director gave us several rounds of golf and was very apologetic.
Golf
Staff was awesome but was sent out with cart full of garbage. Course was in good shape. Pace of play was good up front but was terrible on the back. Overall not great but not bad.
Very tough course. But it is beautiful and fun to play.
The snack bar is closed which is very inconvenient and the pace of play was slow. But that wasn’t the courses fault. As it was the bad 4 some. Windy day so it made an even tougher course but still so much fun.
Best Public Course
Toiyabe is always in great condition, and I love the layout of this course. Unfortunately my friends and I played on one of the windiest days of the week, with even a little rain sprinkled in there! We braved the elements and had a great round regardless!
Beautiful
The course itself is a beautiful course and seemed to be well maintained. We happened to be playing here for our first time in extremely windy conditions, so it was hard to gauge if it was the course that was that difficult or if it was the wind. I am leaning towards a combination of the two. We played on a Saturday afternoon in the middle of June and there was no beverage cart out on the course due to lack of help. Food and beverage prices were high even for a golf course. Pace of play was good and the views were spectacular. If I come back to the area I would like to give the course another shot under less windy conditions.
