Toiyabe Golf Club
About
Nestled at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Toiyabe Golf Club (formerly known as Thunder Canyon Country Club and Lightning "W" Ranch Golf Course.) has a picturesque landscape of shimmering lakes, meandering streams, and towering pines. This course has a traditional layout that features contoured fairways and fast, generous greens. There are nearly 50 bunkers strategically placed throughout and water comes into play on 14 holes. Elevated tees provide spectacular views of Mt. Rose and Slide Mountain. The golf course is challenging but still player-friendly with seven sets of tees. In addition to the course, Toiyabe Golf Club also offers practice facilities that include chipping and sand practice areas along with an expansive putting green.

Best Public Course
Toiyabe is always in great condition, and I love the layout of this course. Unfortunately my friends and I played on one of the windiest days of the week, with even a little rain sprinkled in there! We braved the elements and had a great round regardless!
Beautiful
The course itself is a beautiful course and seemed to be well maintained. We happened to be playing here for our first time in extremely windy conditions, so it was hard to gauge if it was the course that was that difficult or if it was the wind. I am leaning towards a combination of the two. We played on a Saturday afternoon in the middle of June and there was no beverage cart out on the course due to lack of help. Food and beverage prices were high even for a golf course. Pace of play was good and the views were spectacular. If I come back to the area I would like to give the course another shot under less windy conditions.
Great experience
The wind always comes up in the afternoon which makes a tough course even harder. Course knowledge would definitely help off the tee. Course conditions were perfect and greens were smooth and fast. We’ll be back.
Hang on to your hat!
Don’t play this course after 11:00 am The wind was ATROCIOUS. Not a breeze but rather “can’t stand up on the tee box” wind. Blew everyone’s bags over in the practice tees. Staff was picking up baskets and mats before we even went off so that they didn’t disappear in the gales. As a regular to Bandon Dunes as well as a Washoe county resident I understand wind and don’t mind a little wind but the course conditions with the wind were horrific. At the base of the mountains, It’s like every hole is in a wind tunnel.. I would not recommend the course to anyone playing except for early morning tee time. Beautiful views but simply unplayable in the conditions we had. We are all avid golfers who play in a variety of conditions, … we ended up walking off after 10 holes.
Enjoyable round of patience.
Beautiful course in great condition however it was very slow play. We will try it again but on a different day of the week.
