Nestled at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Toiyabe Golf Club (formerly known as Thunder Canyon Country Club and Lightning "W" Ranch Golf Course.) has a picturesque landscape of shimmering lakes, meandering streams, and towering pines. This course has a traditional layout that features contoured fairways and fast, generous greens. There are nearly 50 bunkers strategically placed throughout and water comes into play on 14 holes. Elevated tees provide spectacular views of Mt. Rose and Slide Mountain. The golf course is challenging but still player-friendly with seven sets of tees. In addition to the course, Toiyabe Golf Club also offers practice facilities that include chipping and sand practice areas along with an expansive putting green.

Nice track

Winter conditions. Course was extremely challenging with 40+ mph winds! #9 may be the toughest golf hole I’ve ever played in the wind. Course has great views and excellent staff. Will return this summer

Great course, Mother Nature infused

Good times. Winter course conditions are as good as any in the area! Mother Nature was a bit cruel, with 40 + mph winds! #9 may be the hardest Golf Hole I have ever played with wind. But that’s the Valley. Great Views with a challenging course lay out. Will be back!

Long course, but a great one!

Greens were in great condition, even though it's still winter time.

Pace of play

I have played Toiyabe several times and up until yesterday it’s been 5 stars. For whatever reason they allowed a fivesome to play ahead of the group in front of us. Pace of play really became an issue on hole five, at one point there was a group on the tee box, where we hit our drive, a group in front of us, and another group on the green. I called the pro shop and advised them. They sent a Marshal over to check it out, he was pleasant and said it always backs up on 4-7 then spreads out. Problem is that it never spread out, we had to wait 5-10 minutes on every tee box thereafter as well as on fairways. I absolutely love this course and it was a disappointment even after getting a smoking deal. Our group had a hard time getting into any rhythm basically the entire round. The group in front of us was frustrated and so we’re we. At the turn the snack shop was closed as well… Hopefully they can spread times out and have the Marshal check back to see that the problem was actually rectified in the future.

Winter Golf

Course in decent shape based on huge snow dump in Dec., 2021; some snow/ice in bunkers; x2 temporary greens; fairways in decent shape; pick a day with sunny skies, 63 degrees high and no winds. Golf with 3 of my buddies, a good time was had by all. Good selection of beers on the 19th hole; Best of the Duncan supported courses…..

Delay start and only front 9 open

They delayed our tee time by an hour due to frost. The back 9 of the course was closed so we had to play the front 9 twice. It will be nice to know prior to booking.

Top tier

My overall favorite course in Reno /Sparks area. Always in great shape. A great layout. Only issue is one green gets icey and frozen in winter. It should be covered at night probably?

On My Must Play List When in Reno

I visit family in Reno several times every year and this course is always on my 'Must Play' when I'm in Reno. It's challengeing but very fun. Because it's in between Carson City and Reno, it's usually not jam packed like courses in town, so it's worth the 20 minute drive to enjoy a nice pace of play. I used to drive to Red Hawk, but now I'd rather drive west to Toiyabe. I'm glad this went public.
