Firecliff at Desert Willow Golf Resort
About
A lot of courses say they're all about nature. Desert Willow Firecliff Resort in Cathedral City actually lives it. Natural desert plants are the star of the show here. So much so that the course was featured on the front cover of Smithsonian magazine.
Bobcats, coyotes and desert rabbits have free run of the place, adding another dimension to any round. When you see a bobcat out in the distance of the desert brush, you're not chasing after that golf ball. No matter how much cash you plunked down for the latest in long-distance technology.
Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry designed Desert Willow and it offers a good example of how you become a rising name in the golf architect game. The sand sculpting demands attention from the first hole.
The course looks intimidating to play. With a 138 slope rating, it plays that way too.

Give it a shot Photo submitted by u091450548 on 09/06/2015
Great shape, Greens we’re firm but putted true
Love Desert Willow, got a little warm today 102. Was told the greens weren’t holding , but I found they held just fine. One of my favorite courses here
Great Layout and condition
Challenging course, played from the Purple Tee Boxes. Greens are somewhat tricky with some interesting slopes. Approach shots are key. Greens play true. Pace of play was good: 4 hour round.
Great course
I loved this course very challenging
Beautiful view a on every hole
Good deal for the money
Too much $ for condition of course
This course charges way too much money, and obviously can get it. I used a hot deal; paid about 50% of rack rate, and still thought the course was not really worth it. It’s only April, but the fairways are burnt, the greens are bumpy, and most irritatingly, the bunkers do not have enough sand in them and produce erratic bounces.
Desert Willow is Top Rated public course in Desert
Firecliff is the tougher of the two courses, but its a beautiful and well maintained course especially for a public course. Greens were holding well, and rolled medium fast. Definitely a true roll and challenging. Be ready for the tight track and bunkers, but a well played shot always has plenty of room.
Desert Oasis
From the time you checkin until the time you leave, Desert Willow is a top notch experience.
Fairways were lush, tee boxes maintained and greens smooth and rolled true.
Guys at the Pro shop were professional and inviting /same with the starter. Highly recommend this course and can’t say enough!
Play every year
I play here once every year. The course was in good condition, not excellent. The greens weren't as smooth or as fast as in the past, but they were certainly very playable.
