Firecliff at Desert Willow Golf Resort
About
A lot of courses say they're all about nature. Desert Willow Firecliff Resort in Cathedral City actually lives it. Natural desert plants are the star of the show here. So much so that the course was featured on the front cover of Smithsonian magazine.
Bobcats, coyotes and desert rabbits have free run of the place, adding another dimension to any round. When you see a bobcat out in the distance of the desert brush, you're not chasing after that golf ball. No matter how much cash you plunked down for the latest in long-distance technology.
Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry designed Desert Willow and it offers a good example of how you become a rising name in the golf architect game. The sand sculpting demands attention from the first hole.
The course looks intimidating to play. With a 138 slope rating, it plays that way too.

Give it a shot Photo submitted by u091450548 on 09/06/2015
Perfect for that entertaining golfing experience for visitors and business days
from the time you arrive until you leave, the staff treats you like a full blown member of a swanky country club. The restaurant is first class with a view to die for, the pro shop is very professional, the course is exceptional. There are two courses and both play well, you will not be disappointed with your outing at this place, I would give it 8 stars if I could...keep it in the short stuff,,,
lots of sand
Great course. Not cheap but worth it to play once. Lots of sand so make sure your sand game is solid. Nice mix of desert holes and water hazards.
One of the more beautiful courses in the Palm Springs area
Desert Willow is one of the most beautiful courses in the area. It has water, elevation changes and a wonderful assortment of flora and fauna. The staff was very friendly and professional. A real gem!
The course was in fair shape.
The course was in fair shape. There was damage to two of the greens. The rough had some brown patches to it. The practice area was in below average conditions.
There are too many bunkers to keep this course from being enjoyable.
This is not a resort type course. It is covered with too many bunkers and waste bunker areas. The greens were rough and covered in lots of bird waste.
The club house was beautiful and the practice area was great.
I don't mind playing target golf, but this course a grind and was ridiculous with all the bunkers.
Best in the desert
Courteous and knowledgeable staff. Pristine conditions. Tee boxes set for your skill level. Best in the desert.
If it weren't for the coot droppings it would have been Pristine
Desert Willow is very well maintained, from a turfgrass perspective. The tees, fairways, rough and greens were all in very good to excellent condition. The coots, however, are wreaking havoc on a couple of holes, and for the price we paid I shouldn't be putting through thousands of coot droppings. They should have mainetnance personnel either cleaning the green or keeping the coots from crapping all over them. There were only a few holes where this was an issue, but when you pay a premium price for golf, you expect the course condition to reflect that.
Great layout and well maintained
Played in early Dec 2012.
Layout is challenging but not severe. Course just came out of overseeding fairways were great. I like a little grass under the ball. Greens were a bit on the slow side and took some getting used to. Definitely a top notch area course and worth the higher than area average daily fee.
Only critism was that signage for some tee boxes and for restrooms was a bit confuising or lacking.
Would most definitely play again.
Beautiful, challenging course!
I played six courses in the greater Palm Springs area on vacation and this was my favorite. It was also my worst score. Even though it is a very challenging course there is nothing unfair. There are over 100 bunkers on the course and many of them are perfectly placed off the tees. The views on the course are outstanding and the course was in perfect condition. Will definitely play again!
Excellent course both in design and condition. Lots of fun to play especially if you like sand. Staff very helpful and friendly.
Excellent design and condition. Lot of fun to play, especially if you like sand. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Very well run system.
5 hour 10 minutes
Course allowed two foursomes of hackers to conduct a best ball match in the middle of the day on a holiday. 5 hours and ten minutes. This is what you get at a city park course. It shouldn't be like this at a premium resort course. This destroyed any rythm and as all golfers know, high scores result.
Excellent layout .... good challenge.
Course condition was excellent having just reopened from overseeding. Pace of play was good but a little on the slow side.
Good layout. Very enjoyable to play.
Great day of golf at the best course in the valley
In my opinion this is the best course in the valley. From the greeting on our arrival to the assistance at our departure the staff could not be more helpful. The course is in wonderful condition and we really enjoyed it. Even the sand traps of which there were many made for an interesting game. Thanks for showing us a great time.
One of my favorite courses in the Desert
Beautiful course design, challenging layout, professional and friendly staff, and great facilities.
One of the best in the valley
I always try to include a round on each of the 2 courses at this location.
Difficult course. Not for the high handicapper.
The overall condition of the course was slightly above average. However, the fairways were mowed rather long, and they were also over-watered. This made for almost no roll on tee shots. And, it turned an already difficult course into a monster. This course is not for the high handicapper. If you normally shoot in the mid-80s to low 90s, expect to shoot in the low 90s to 100.
One final note... This course plays slower than most Coachella Valley courses - at least in the summer. Our 3-some quit after 15 holes 'cause we were waiting on every shot and had already been out for 3+ hours in 100+ degree heat. If you are looking for a quick summer round, it isn't going to happen at the Desert Willow Firecliff course.
One of our favorite dessert courses.
Firecliff is a challenging course that we enjoy every time we get to the dessert. It is generally in great condition and has a nice layout with many bunkers and hazards. You can score well if you keep it in the fairway but if you stray, the course can pile on strokes rapidly. Very hot and humid the day we played even with a 6:40 tee time. We moved around the course quickly and enjoyed it immensely. Very good condition, medium speed greens.
Great track to play
Love this couse, it a great track and great price!
Nice course but expensive
Enjoyed course, well maintained, good food, not a good value price wise however at $117.00.
Challenging and fair
Liked this course. Right from the start at the bag drop and then into the shop, this is a well run operation. The course was quiet which suited us and there is enough changing scenery to make you forget that this is a square lot inside the city. The fairways and greens were in good condition considering this is September and the sun has been burning for a good number of months. Some technical holes and thought required. I would return and recommend this to any others thinking about it.
