Firecliff at Desert Willow Golf Resort
About
A lot of courses say they're all about nature. Desert Willow Firecliff Resort in Cathedral City actually lives it. Natural desert plants are the star of the show here. So much so that the course was featured on the front cover of Smithsonian magazine.
Bobcats, coyotes and desert rabbits have free run of the place, adding another dimension to any round. When you see a bobcat out in the distance of the desert brush, you're not chasing after that golf ball. No matter how much cash you plunked down for the latest in long-distance technology.
Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry designed Desert Willow and it offers a good example of how you become a rising name in the golf architect game. The sand sculpting demands attention from the first hole.
The course looks intimidating to play. With a 138 slope rating, it plays that way too.

Fabulous desert curse
Far and away my favorite desert course, with an abundance of challenges, but with good course management the rewards are worth an occasional risk. Bunkers dot the fairways and protect the greens, so accuracy must be in your bag. Firecliff is one of the prettiest courses in the area, well maintained and the restaurant/bar offer a great opportunity to take in the beauty of the place. Your ball striking skills will be tested, but the smart golfer will be rewarded by good decisions. I will play this course every time we visit the area.
We liked the fact that the course still had lots of natural terrain
We had a great round of golf, played the round in 4 1/2 hours because we were almost the last twosome of the day & took our time to enjoy the scenery & smell the roses so to speak, We did let the few singles play through. The course was in great shape & for a 20 Handicapper most enjoyable from the white Tee's.
Good layout, rough conditions
I played when they were preparing for over-seeding(wasn't mentioned when I made my time online) and the course was brown and rough. Greens were OK but didn't see this courses best face. Good layout with some nice views of the area. May try it again but not the best first impression.
Extrememly Accomodating / Beautiful Courses
We played on one of those rare desert days when the rain actually can chase you off the course / The Pro Shop staff was extremely accommodating in getting us back out 48 hours later on a beautiful desert day........Unfortunately, my game didn't improve over that time frame !!!!
Good, not Great
Firecliff was on a must play list in many places so decided to give it a try. It was priced in line with other top tier publics for the low season and was not on par. The greens were shaggy and did not play nearly as well as Classic or Indian Wells. Course was in average condition but did offer some nice views and a decent challenge. Would recommend Silverorck, Classic Course, La Quinta or Indian Wells over Firecliff any day.
Always A Challenge
Greens are in great shape and the course is moving along quite well. I usually give this course the highest rating however there are many rough areas on many of the fairways form either the heat or some disease and that is why my rating is not the highest.
Still a great value for the money and plays very fast.
Exceptional value
9:30 tee-off, done at 1:30. Had the course to ourselves. As usual, course knowledge is paramount. If in, doubt dial back off the tee and play in with what you're given. I basically played bogey golf, but didn't mind a bit because the place is gorgeous! (Thus making my wife happy!) Staff is very attentive and the clubhouse outstanding; plan on lunch! Will return on our next visit to the valley.
This course needs marshall
First nine was fine, got to the tenth tee box and was informed by a twosome waiting to tee off that the pace was very very slow, three twoswomes in front of them that ment four twosomes infront of me. Decided to quit after nine, was offered to play the first nine on their Mountain Course but declined.
The most beautiful course I have seen. The views are a mazing!
I thoroughly enjoyed playing on this course and will do so every time I visit Palm Springs
Love the course
Excellent staff. Ice machine not working on front side. Bunkers were not raked!
What a brilliant Course, wow, we are coming back
Just played in Late June, course was in brilliant shape apart from 1 tee 16th. The welcome from the starter and pro shop was really inviting and the range facility was really good. The desert blue tee boxes set back from the fairways were picturesque and challenging, the fairways were luscious and green, although we did dodge a sprinkler late in the round and the greens were in really good shape compared to others in Palm Springs on this visit. This is really worth a visit for golfers who shoot under 90 consistently and will test your all round game. Go play
Very challenging course.
Very tough course, requires you to think about your approach shot. Fairways were in pristine condition for the summer, the greens were true and fair. Interesting dog legs and long par 5's require distance of the tee. One of my favorite desert courses in the area.
A great course for all levels.
A favourite to visit while in Palm Springs, this course should be near the top of every golfers list for the area.Always in good condition,it has a good variety of holes, long and short..The pick being the 18,scenically very good, pleasing to the eye and challenging..water comes into play on the drive-lay-up and the approach to the green.Afitting end to an excellent course.
Very friendly staff from arrival to after round lunch
Great course and variable difficulty depending on which tees you play from. Will definately go back
great Track.
Great test of golf. Godd condition on the irecliff course. Very pleasing to play and a great summer value.
A great tract for serious golfers, not for beginners
A beautiful and challenging course. Moderate and above skills required, not for beginners
Great time!
From the moment we pulled up into parking lot, the staff was friendly. The young ladies in golf shop were very helpful. The starter let us go early which was great. The course was in excellent condition and noticed many of the grounds crew were out on course working hard. Will definitely be back to play again.
Great shape. Great off-season price.
The course was in great shape. With the reduced summer rates for desert golf kicking in this is one of the good deals to be had.
One of the most beautiful and exquisitely maintained courses in the whole Coachella valley!
A very enjoyable course to play, w/ one proviso--you better first brush up on your sand trap skills 'cause there are bunkers everywhere! Otherwise, it is very fun to play and a scenic delight.
