Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

Loved having a time to hit a few before tee time
Totally relaxing day of golf! We did pause for a breath on one hole though - we found ourselves and our ball between a huge alligator in the pond and a baby one in the fairway!
After that we left all errant balls to fend for themselves, if they were in any wooded areas. Happy hunting!
greens were quick and "hilly"
solid layout. pace of play was good, as was the overall experience. course has trees down, but they are not in play and frankly I don't understand the criticism in some other reviews. good mix of holes, made more difficult by the contours (pin placements) of the greens. good value with a hot deal.
Challenging!
On a cool but sunny day I played with my wife., son and son in law. The course was an excellent challenge for all of us as we used three sets of tee boxes. The greens are large , fast and undulating. Unfortunately we were stuck behind a foursome of men who probably were over ther heads on a course this tough. We waited on every shot for 18 holes and the course was empty in front of them. We would definitely return and recommend the course.
Firm Greens and free range balls
Got lucky with a hot deal for $20 on a chilly windy afternoon. The free range balls to start the round were great. The range and practice green were well maintained. The fairways were great, tight turf and challenging. The greens were firm, quick and not a flat spot on them. I loved this course and played in 2.5 hours as a single.
Arthur hills
No gps - lot of trees down - fairways not in good shape pace of play good : but not busy and still 4:30 hours
Two Great Courses at Palmetto Hall
My wife and I enjoyed playing this course. It has become an annual play for us. it is nice to come south and get roll this time of year.
Excellent golf experience
Readily enjoyed playing the Hills course at Palmetto Hall with my son. The greens were in excellent shape and the rest of the course was in fine spring condition. The practice range was readily accessible which enabled us to limber up prior to our round. As a twosome we played 18 holes in 3 hours; we readily enjoyed the overall golf experience.
Arthur Hills likes Rolling greens
Played the Hills yesterday at Palmetto Hall. Needs a little TLC from Tees to Green, but Greens were awesome. Tough layout. Greens offer lots of undulation. Flat spots rare. Don't go for the amenities.
Buildings a little tired. but a strong foundation of a golf course. Will return to play the Cupp course
DOWN HILL 4 A.H.
Condition of course speaks for it self. I noticed not one worker all day long working to improve the course. Tee boxes, rough, and fairways scruffy thru out the 18. The layout of holes are very nice. Pace of play was great for us, because no one going to pay what they ask for here (over priced). Management needs a wake up call.
Tough Course
Second time playing this course although u remembered very little of it. Course is a lot tougher than most of course I play in Hilton head. it is a lot tough than the other course at Palmetto Hall. I had a bad day but the guy I got pared with who was a much better golfer had a lot of trouble around the greens due to pin placement and layout. Ig you are good golfer and want a challenge give this one a try. if you like me play the Robert Coup course it is a bit easier and you well enjoy it a lot more. Site has great practices facility that is included with Green fee. Range ball or included and they have two large chipping greens with a few bunkers to practice from with plenty of balls to hit.
Johns Palmetto H day
The course conditions were very disappointing. The tees had a lot of bare spots, sand in the bunkers was thin & hard. Turf in the rough was very thin in many areas or just dirt. Greens were in good shape and were challenging . Fairways wre dried out and brown.. Range balls were included in the price, but there were on;y a few balls lying on the range to use for warm ups. The hole layout/design for # 12 was not pleasant. Tee time intervals were too tight and we felt rushed the whole time even though we played the 18 holes in 4 hrs. This course is not even close to being worth the $ 85 pp that was shown for a pm tee time tomorrow. Very disappointing round for the four of us.
very challenging course
having never played this course before, and we were on our own (wife and I), it was esp. tough when you did not know where to hit your shots close to the green. There were some grass bunkers, depressions etc we could not identify from the distance . I would love to play this again with some course knowledge. Some very tough holes around water hazards, with occasional narrow landing areas. Greens are huge, well maintained. Bunkers were quite nice. A lot of activity going on still cleaning up from last years . hurricane. The pace was pretty good.
Another Good Round
Course was in great shape for time of year. Pace was good and greens were fantastic. Clubhouse folks were great as always. Will be returning for sure.
Tman
Challenging layout for avg golfer. Fun to play. Playing conditions were good. Recommend playing this course for avg and above player. If first time, play it forward for most fun experience.
Average Course
Place just seems to be mismanaged. All kinds of issues with the Ttimes, not enough carts, no on course beverage service and the course was packed.
Staff was very friendly, and helpful but that didn't help with the frustration of t times being off because of no carts. Greens were in good condition but the rest of the course needs attention. Can tell they are still working thru the remenants of the hurricane in October and it is February and the course won't be perfect. Just glad we found a reasonable rate on GolfNow otherwise we wouldn't have been very happy.
Quick round on a good course
played round in three hours. Greens in good shape with average fairways.
Our first time playing this course, so arrived one hour early to hit balls, chip & putt. No carts available upon arrival, so range balls were complimentary, which was very nice. However, the delay in getting carts did not allow our group time on the putting green, which definitely had a negative impact on our game. Also had to let some single golfers play through our foursome. Course in good shape for winter conditions & despite hurricane damage in the area.
Were happy to hear you enjoyed your rounds with us. The wildlife can be a bit tricky out here at times but it only adds to the experience!
