The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

First time
Overall I enjoyed the course but the greens were slow and in average condition. I thought the layout was challenging but playable. Decent value on GolfNow but I would have been dissatisfied if I would have paid full price.
Bad Greens
Tee's and fairways were OK to go along with OK design. The greens were horrible. Will not go back and plenty of other golf courses to pick from on HHI.
shot makers delight
One of my favorite courses on HHI. It is a shot makers course. On many holes you need to have your tee shot be in a certain position or you will be in jail. It also means you are not always hitting driver. Hole #2 don't hit driver. Hole #17 don't hit driver just get it to the right spot..
Such great character to the course and a lot of fun.
The greens look like the need some help some brown patches. One green in particular I want to say #4 or #5 seems like every time I have played it has in the front of the green areas that are chewed up.
Don't let that stop you, if you are not scared by the price then make a trip.
Good track for the money
Greens had just been punched so very slow, still enjoyable, worth playing
Tough when out of position but fun.
Tree lined fairways require hitting drives that give a player small areas to hit to.Makes for some interesting 2nd shots.Greens recently aerated but we're recovering well.Looking forward to playing it many more times.
Nice course
In spite of the sanded greens we had a beautiful round. Hardly any people. Very friendly staff.
Hilton head trip
First time to play this course after coming to Hilton Head for years. The course layout was great. Not a much water and sand traps as other courses in the area. Made the experience more enjoyable.
Good Course
Course was in very good shape. There is nothing extremely exceptional about this course but it is very nice. The pace of play was very good and the staff treat you well. Would recommend esp. if you can get a good deal.
A average place to play
The course was dry and cluttered. Given the hurricanes extensive damage to the entire area, all courses are suffering so I believe all should be given an out, however, this course was the worst shape of the five we have played.
Great course to play while on the island. Staff were very friendly. I played with no one before or after me so pace was fantastic. Greens were well taken care of, with great pin locations that were challenging but not unfair.
Picture perfect day in HHH
We enjoyed the course which is in good condition, some burnout on fairways but greens are excellent and fast.
The sand traps really need some work, difficult to get your club through the ball.
Staff was very friendly and accommodating . We would definitely recommend this course .
