Glad to be back!

It's been about a year but it was great to play here again. We always enjoy playing this course. Managed to pick up a great last minute price on a tee time when we had not even anticipated playing that day it between the weather and the price and how much we love this course we could not pass it up.

We even played halfway decent.

Top budget course

Played an afternoon round. My average score is around 100 I found this course challenging but open enough that I was able to scramble around. Greens had some issues this May but for a public course in Vegas it was par for the course. Great pro shop and nice retro bar and grill at the end.

Over priced for conditions.

We had high expectations for this course since the price was over $120 and the pictures looked great (but they always do). Sadly it was a disappointment. Let’s start at the tees. Some were very hard and crowned. Several of the par 3s I couldn’t get a tee in the ground. Some thinner spots on the tees and I’m not talking about divot holes, just thin areas. Ok moving to the fairways, very tightly mowed grass. Spotty grass throughout the fairways and hard surfaces. Positive side was the fringe wasn’t very thick. Now let’s talk bunkers. Oh my! Super hard! You didn’t have to worry about leaving footprints or even raking they were so hard! We treated them as if you landed on the cart path since they were just as hard and did a free drop. Hmmm the cart path may have been softer. Finally the greens, inconsistently mowed. Some were tight, some were thicker, some had splotches, some had very thin grass.

Overall layout is nice. Shot placement on some holes is required. Not super narrow but water can come into play. I moved up one set to the blue tees since the winds were steady at 20mph with gusts over 30 mph and it was my first time playing the course. Shot 84 so was happy with the very windy conditions.

The best part about the day was the staff! Super friendly and helpful! Kudos to them and how they treat the players from taking your bag to clearing the driving range. Thank you!

So bottom line for me is this course could use some TLC. Not worth over $100 but probably closer to $70. If conditions improve then maybe $100.

Fair value May golf

Played Chimera Monday the 5th. It’s a pleasant layout, only 124 slope from the tips. I was surprised the grass hadn’t grown in more eagerly yet. Fairways were very thin, some greens have small bare patches. Red tees were in good shape but the more use blue tees were almost bare.

The course was pretty full but the pace of play was good. We played 17 holes in less than 4 hours and we skipped 18 when the downpour hit.

At the $72 local rate this was fair value for May. One guy we played with said it was a much better deal than Bali Hai, which he had played Sunday.

Grounds Crew and Beverages

Grounds crew showed no consideration for your game, mowing while taking a swing or in your way.

Never saw a cart girl for beverages the entire day!

Nice Layout

Chimera was one of the courses we played during our Vegas trip. Found the layout to be fun but the course conditions were not ideal. Greens were bumpy but they seemed to roll pretty true but slower than expected. Some dry spots on the fairways but this is desert golf so not unexpected but definitely not worth the rate I paid for our twosome.

Everyone we encountered (workers) at the course were friendly. The starter was a bit grumpy but I think that was due to being a bit overwhelmed due how busy the course was. They were starting everyone off the 10th hole, but they hooked us up with a couple of members and he sent us off the 1st tee where we had no wait teeing off. and were able to get through the front in less than 2 hours. The back nine was slower due to the back up but not to bad - got through in about 2 1/2 hours. The guys we were hooked up were a hoot and we really enjoiyed our round.

I know this is high season in Vegas for golf, but what we paid for the round based on the conditions I don't think it's worth it. Would love to play it again, but it has to be at a more reasonable rate.

Chimera Golf Club

This is my 3rd time playing Chimera over the last couple of years. It has some good challenges. The conditions have improved over the last couple of years. I didn't get quite the 'bargain' Tee Off Times rate I'd had in the past but it was still much better than many other options.
