Fun Course
I had a lot of fun playing this course and I bet with play here you would learn how to play it better. It seems pretty short but I think just banging away is not the answer I just need to play it more often. Some more play would also help on the greens they are a little hard to read properly your first time out. The Starter said they all break to the water so I guess beings you are on an Island he was right.
Fun Course and great value give it a try
Thank you Grant for the four star review! We are glad you had a great time out on the course. See us again soon!
Course Seemed "Tired"
I have played Mare several times in the past but this was the first time that I found the course to be in rather sad shape. The bunkers were like concrete clay pits with no sand. I only had one bunker shot and that was like hitting off a cart path.
The fairways had large areas where there wasn't any grass or if there was grass, it was in patches.
The pace of play was very slow with a 5-some ahead of me.
Overall not as good an experience as I remember. I will not be back the rest of this year.
I was also charged more at the pro shop than Golf Now said I was to pay.
We apologize if your expectations weren't met on your summer visit at Mare Island earlier this year. We are always improving the course and customer experience. Hope you can try the golf course again in the near future.
Mare Island review
Not happy. Driving range was closed though I called two hours before and was told it was open. No food available ( afternoon cook didn't show up) Tenth and first holes reversed so my Garmin golf watch had to be reset. Beautiful though very demanding course but remote and hard to get to in an abandoned and rundown old naval base. Sad, really, but clearly owners are struggling here to stay in business.
Course conditions
Greens on 1 through 9 are disease (inputtable) overall conditions of course have deteriated over past two years.
It is in Rough Shape...
I got a great deal playing here today, and thank goodness. Otherwise I'd be upset. The fairways are mostly weeds in the center, dirt on the sides. The greens are bumpy mixed grass. The carts are on their last legs... I had to babysit mine, with a broken windshield and broken parking brake. The flags were all tattered, faded and held in place with tape. The bunkers were just dirt... they aren't even making an effort. I don't know what's going on with this course, but until they get it back in shape I can't recommend it unless you get a super deal.
Great course
Course is challenging yet fun. Great views. Will definitely play again. And will definitely recommend it to everyone. It was cool to see all the old military structures and bunkers. Staff is super friendly. A word of advice. Definitely stay in the fairway. Off fairway hits are very unforgiving.
Thank you for writing a Five star review! We are pleased to hear how you had a great time. Hope to see you again this season.
Play here!
This is a good course in decent shape and fun to play. Except for the bunkers that Donny have any sand in them the course is in good shape. I'm a Mid 80's golfer and I found to a good challenge.
Nice layout but needs lots of TLC!
First time in this golf course and really looking for new places to play at the Northern California region. The conditions were average and the greens were patchy. Some areas totally dry and some very nice. Needs a lot of TLC to make it a great place to play, as the laout is very different as the regular links type of courses around. Being there done that!
Worth the trip
challenging course, the front has a lot of change in elevation and the back is more links style. The fairways could use some TLC. The greens vary in speed and have quite a bit of break to them. Overall, it was a good time. I would recommend playing first thing in the morning because the wind will pick up in the afternoon making this place really tough to play.
Don't Let the Pictures Deceive You
Course was in awful shape. Reviews of the course that I read were fairly positive, and all of the pictures made it look amazing. I figured at least some of them must be recent. Wrong - the clubhouse is nice but the course itself is falling into disrepair. The rough is completely gone on most holes, there's only mud, and they're starting to lose most of the fairways. Some greens were decent, many seem to have a poa annua problem and are very bumpy and uneven. Bunkers are all hard as rocks, many have grass creeping into them. Very poorly maintained. Unfortunate because it's a pretty good layout and could be a challenging course if it was well kept.
Not the best experience
The course was not in the best condition. It also had a huge number of flees, which made it a poor experience. I felt it was not worth the price.
If you like history try this course
After the history of this course there isn't much to brag about. The staff were a bit overbearing and didn't give any recommendations on the course. When we approached the first green we realized why, it looked like a vegetable salad. Not much maintenance on this course but for a few greens near the clubhouse.
Disappointed
Our foursome was looking forward to a fun day at Mare Island. Unfortunately, we had a disappointing experience. Poor pacing, no bathroom facilities on the course, and rough greens.
It took 2 hours and 45 minutes for the first 9 holes. At the turn, a group popped in front of us and said they were given permission to play ahead of us because of slow service in the restaurant (now3 groups waiting to tee off). We went to the pro shop and requested a refund for the last 9 holes.
Compliments to the manager who refunded our round. Maybe another time.
Very Disappointed
Was looking forward to this course had heard good things, but not the case. The fairways, and greens were in extremely poor condition. Very confusing layout and rather ran down looking. Well not play there again.
Big Disappointment
Been playing here for years, even when it was only 9 holes. I've never seen the course in such bad shape. Evidently the new owner spent some money on the club house and let the course go. Bare fairways, no sand in traps, bumpy greens. Very sad. Won't be coming back.
golf with a view
Went golfing at The Mare Island Golf Club and had a wonderful day. The course is beautifully laid out and has million dollar views! I highly recommend it to everyone. The back nine has now become the front nine and so you get to feel on top of the world on your first nine holes , when you stand looking at the bay views curving into the views of the distant Mt. Tam. Breathtaking. A hawk or osprey will usually make an appearance too.
less wind, more bites
Title explanation: It was windy, but not nearly the usual summer afternoon blow. However, the mosquitoes (for being early afternoon--not dusk-- and hot and dry) were pretty relentless (so sprayed my legs before back nine....much better). OK, I always enjoy the course (beautiful views) and the pace was very good (can often be slow)--4:15 for a 3-some. Greens were in nice shape. Front nine (original 1800"s layout) is interesting, if not terribly difficult. Back nine (circa 2000) is more difficult w/ big elevation changes and more wind (w/ more views). If you haven't played it yet, it's worth it for the views and the history (military industrial bldgs, educational and former officers' homes beautiful).
It takes you back in time.
Extremely poor course management of play
My wife and I routinely play this course, weekly if possible. It's divided layout of traditional & links style is challenging and fun, and the views of the surrounding area make this a stunning experience. One perennial problem, which may seem trivial, is that the kitchen can never ever seem to keep enough Stella Artois beer on tap available for those who play afternoon golf. It's the obvious favorite beer golfers at this course. Its mind boggling that management can't figure out how to keep this beer flowing. Honestly, this issue is a regular one, weekend to weekend. Now to the truly frustrating issue for this round. Then I signed us in for our 12:40 pm Hot Deal tee time, I was told that the starter at the 1st hole left at 11:30 am, and that it was "dog eat dog" out there; groups were begging to get started early, and everyone was on the honor system. The front nine had a reasonable pace, but the back nine bogged down quickly. We finally gave up on our round after 15 holes. At the 16th hole, we we one of THREE groups waiting to tee off, with one group WAITING mid fairway on a group on the green. Thor last three holes could have easily taken 2+ hours to play. We left and went home, which was a huge disappointment to me, as this round of golf was to celebrate by birthday. I gently but firmly complained in the pro shop, and was given a coupon "2 for 1" round, but only good on weekdays, and I was told that this was all I could be offered. It was appreciated, but my wife and I work full time, Monday through Friday, and to use it, we have to take a day off of work to use it. We love this course, and will continue to play it, but this was more than a frustrating round.
Good value for a Hot Deal
I hadn't played here in about 3 years. And I don't think they have done anything to the bunkers since then. Only reason I played, it seemed like a good deal (Hot Deal), so I got my $15 worth. Since this course is two 9 holers put together, the experience is two different courses. The original dates back to the Roosevelt era (Teddy, not FDR) and the new holes are well....new. Greens are two different eras also. STAY OUT OF THE BUNKERS (unless you like hitting off of clay). On the plus side, staff was friendly and accommodating and I finished the round in great time.
Thank you for the four star review! Come back and hit the greens at Mare Island again soon!
