Lot's of hills, and great views
Though the course has moderate difficulty, with lot's of hills, I found that the bunkers were more dirt than sand, and very few rakes. It was a holiday so 5 hours to play round. Staff was friendly, burgers very good, but beer that was bought in can, wasn't as cold as could be.
Goodvalue
Decent condition and good price and fun course to play...good value.
First time playing
Let's start out with my level of play Begginer ! Went with 3 advisors and we had a remarkable day! Just as we started the sun burst out , what a view ! The greens were fast the fairways are up! And down! Just a great a great course, looking forward to return to play! Lots of great history at Mare Island. Hidden Gem.
Mare Island
The drought is taking its toll. Lots of bare spots throughout the course ~ greens were in fairly good shape though. Pace of play was extremely slow.
Hot Day...But Fun
Although we were riding, there were too many areas where the cart was not allowed, and that can wear a person down when the temperature was hovering around 90 degrees. We knew it would be hot out there, and prepared ourselves with lots of water and ice cubes from home. Brought fruit along to give us more energy, too.
Decent outing
A fun track suffering from drought a bit. Windy as heck.
Excellent day to compete with NFL opening day.
Several two and threesomes in front and behind us. Pace of play was never an issue. 82 degrees at start time. Only windy on the higher holes. Wind effected play on three or four holes. Elevated tees added to enjoyment and challenge. Brown patches on fairways, but the greens were in fantastic shape, although very fast. Food was great. We caught Happy Hour at the turn ($3 Well drinks). OB's are unforgiving. Tried to hit out of a lie near blackberry bushes. They drew blood. We will definitely return.
Hidden Gem
This course is definitely out of the way, but once you make it, you are in for a unique treat. The course is adventuresome to play, and while we played in the early spring, it showed promise of becoming more fun as the summer went on. Very wet in the low parts of the course when we played. The old military grounds were interesting to look at and play around.
Challenging course
I like playing this course because of the layout. You will have to really play target golf to score. Great views of the delta and 10 degrees cooler when playing in scorching hot weather. GolfNow fees are too much compared to other sites. No incentives to continue booking with this site. Have booked over 50 percent less this year on this site due to the fees, but playing 30 percent more. Using other sites more.
Terrible service
Proshop staff was rude and unfriendly, the course was decent a few good holes, but a lot of dirt areas. Also the snackshop closed the grill at 4pm!!
Submarine Alley
This course is at the old Naval Base and there are still munition bunkers all over the course. The greens were great. You can drive the cart to your ball....and with the hills you're going to need it. Fun course to play.
One of my favorites
Challenging, well maintained, good value for the buck. Ideal for intermediate and advance players. But high handicappers will enjoy this course if they manage the course well and play within their limits. Some fairways are narrow and lots of hazards to take care of errant shots. Lots of elevation changes and the greens are fast. If not for the commute, I'd be playing here more often.
Great overall course
Tough course but enjoyed it. A bit slow and no marshal to keep slow players moving.
Bring your bug spray!
This course has the potential to be pretty good, but it's horrible right now. They are watering it very little because of the drought (I guess they don't have access to reclaimed water), so you can often hit from bare patches of dirt even when you hit the fairways. Most of the greens are uneven and very dry. And, they have a GIGANTIC mosquito problem! Thousands ands thousands (not exaggerating!) of mosquitos, that will land on and bite you while you're hitting, lining up putts, riding in the carts, etc. Be warned: asked if they have sprayed for mosquitoes or bring bug spray or you will be itching bug bites for days.
Great fun!
Long overdue for my first round at Mare, I finally grabbed an early tee time as a single and walked 18 holes. Tons of fun! Although next time I will wear pants and/or wear bug spray. What the course lacked in today's length standards, it made up for in demand for accuracy and creative shot making. I don't believe length is everything anyway! I finally hit a log jam on 14 as I believe they started letting people off the back 9 early as well. A twosome joined me which was enjoyable. The staff was also very friendly and helpful! I will be back here very soon in the near future as the surroundings and value for the Bay Area are second to none!
Is great to play a mountain course
Half of the Fairways are getting to be very dry.
Bunkers dirt to hard is like hitting of the sidewalk.
Nice Views
Course has a variety of challenges and lovely views. Some greens were a bit erratic and fairways ranged from average to poor condition. Traps were crusty concrete. Still, I was not disappointed and was able to escape from 100+ temps in the central valley for a day.
Revenge
TRULY A BARGAIN FOR THE ARCHITECTURE LAYOUT!.
This was the 2nd time I played here at Mare Island. From the Blue tees or White, the layout of the course is a very challenging both greens and fairways. After my performance on the first time playing poorly a month ago, I had to get my revenge for all the shots the course had stolen from me.
This time II was very happy to have made many more pars in spite of a couple of double bogeys I managed to get 13 over par for the round.
Perhaps due to the drought the course conditions were rough:The :poanna greens were bumpy and fairways average.
Don't miss out on the challenge and beautiful views!
Ugh!!
I've played here many times over the years. The conditions (greens, fairways) were terrible. Went to call the snack shop at the turn.....and was stunned to find it was closed.
I was told by the group I was paired up with "the course is under new management"....so far it was terrible. It will be a while before I go there again...
