Super slow
Great layout and enjoyable overall. We had breakfast but wished we hadn't. Food and staff not impressive. Pace of play 5.5 hours. No Marshall. No bunker rakes with a full handle. Typical public course where it's all about overbooking and no supervision to keep players moving. We had a drinking group in front of us spending 10 minutes looking for lost balls. Too bad such nice course in a great setting. Won't go back until we see changes. They could take a lesson from Blue Rock Springs.
Great Value for the Average Golfer
The course was great as far as fairways and greens. Rough wasn't cut very well and only thing I'll say is the sand traps were poorly maintained. Was like hitting off hard dirt.
As long as you stay in the fairway and out of the bunkers, you'll love this course for the price.
After this round, I made the decision that since I only get so many days to go and play golf, I'm going to play well maintained courses. It's worth the extra $20-$30 bucks to me to play a "true" course
No sand in traps
Every trap contains dirt. You cannot
explode the ball out of the trap. You must play it like hard pan. It takes some getting use to. Actually,
you should not have to get used to this condition.
Fear The Mare
The best bargain and most bang for the buck! Challenging course. Not too long but trouble here and there, windy and the vistas are so beautiful they can be distracting! Often crowded which translates into slow play. Not very walkable due to the elevations of the Front 9 (formerly the Back 9). Food and beverage snack bar with friendly staff everywhere. I highly recommend it if you can find it.
Spectacular views
We had very little wind and plenty of sunshine.
Foggy Day
Came out on a Saturday morning for a 7:10am tee time. Very foggy at first. The first 6 holes were dramatically slowed due to not being able to see 20 feet in front of us. Slight weather oversight on our part, can't blame the course for nature's curveballs, but just giving a review on that particular day. After the fog burned off, it was a very nice day of golf. Mare Island is a very nice course because of it's surrounding views of the San Pablo Bay and the Bay area, however, there is room for improvement on the greens and the fairways. There are many areas that need consistent grass and landscaping. .
Slow as turtle in molasses
This was my first time atmare island. It was a terrible experience the pace of play was so bad it took 3 hours to do nine holes there were four sets of 4 in front of us. I lost all my concentration by the time I had gotten to the 12th hole there was no Marshall out there telling them to keep the pace of play it took them almost 25 minutes per hole that was a terrible pace to be playing by by the 13th I decided to to call it quits I will not be going back to that course again
Great Pre-Christmas round
Came here after work and had a blast. Just played by myself to try to practice on a few things and had a great time out. The weather was perfect for a December afternoon. Skies clear as crystal and not too cold. I chose to play here since it was on my way home from work. While it isn't the most glamorous golf course to play, it has some character and I like the change in elevation on many of the holes.
Cold, but Nice day out
Played her on a Tuesday morning in December. Temps were in the low 30s to start and we had a 15 minute frost delay. I love the views of the surrounding areas from this course and it has an old feel to it. It isn't the best course in the area but it seems like they are working to improve it.
A tough challenge
This is a great old course, not very long, but it has a lot of places that you do NOT want to hit your ball into. It has lots of elevated tees and up- and down- hill shots, the greens are undulating and roll very well.
Our only disappointment was the fact that the kitchen was closed when we finished our round at 1:20!
Disappointed.
I have played here several times over the last 2 years, but this was the first time in @ 6 months.
Had to start on 10 as they said they are considering changing the course permanently , despite all signage still original. First cart I choose had a broken bag clip. Cart Pathways are in terrible shape, with many broken fences. Fairways are scrappy. Several greens had mower oil damage and were bumpy. Pin placements on some holes were in impossible sloped locations. No drink cart on a weekend.
Bottom line I was very disappointed in the course conditions, and for the same money could play other nearby courses in much better condition including Napa and Eagle Vines.
Great course and layout
Loved playing at Mare Island! The course was in good condition for the time of year. Had a feel of Harding Park.
Great Value for surrounding area
Reasonably priced. Lots of challenges. Greens run fast. Careful with approach shots. Many holes if you miss long will result in OB.
Fun course with great views
Really enjoyed layout of the course with great views
better hit straight
perfect day weather wise... haven't played here in a couple of years..forgot how narrow the front is ( the original course) .. greens in great condition
Greens were perfect
Fairways were a liitle dried out... welcome to Northern CA but the greens were awesome.
Nice Track
This course provides a challenge for all levels of ability. In good condition considering the drought. Great value. Would play again and recommend it.
