Sanded greens
The greens were sanded heavily but For $25 you can't beat it. This course has great scenic views and interesting hole configurations. I love the nautical history that is represented.
An interesting course but not at the right time
Played back nine twice because front nine was under repair. The greens were good but the fairways were barely acceptable. The group in front was very slow and it took us more than 4 hours to play a relatively short course.
Mare Island
The course was in excellent shape, the weather was awesome and it made views of the bay fabulous. The greens were receptive and it is good challenge. Thanks.
This course is well manicured with beautiful views.
Fantastic , i enjoyed the course, however some of the clientele were less than receptive and displayed a lack of etiquette.
Challenge for Course Management
Played the white tees for first time here. ~5800+ yds. Even though short, this course is VERY challenging due to elevation changes and tight fairways, especially on front 9. This is not a 'grip it and rip it course"! You have to think about placement on every hole, and how to approach greens. Greens are VERY fast, with a lot of slope so you need to be below holes! Stay out of bunkers as they are mostly adobe below thin layers of sand.
This course has fabulous views
It was the most beautiful day at this course that I can remember. The course was in good shape. The weather was gorgeous which made the views even better. The pace was fantastic, however, I know there were several tee times open. The day was great!
Mare Island Dissapointment.
This was a bust from the get go. They airated the fairways with 1" holes and left the mud chunks everywhere. I had to clean my shoes every hole! What's up with that. The Starter sent us off on the front nine with the wrong pin placement. The conserving persons took 20 minutes to give me a cold Polish dog and had to put on the condiments in the kitchen, what is that? Overall completely disgusted with the service and conditions.
Challenging
First Of all, Mare Island IS NOT THE OLDEST course west of the Mississippi!!! That distinction belongs to Aetna Springs in Pope Valley (1891)
Great Views. Hilly. You better be in great shape if you walk this course!
Greens putted great. 10-11 stent.
Winds are a factor.
challenging course
Mare Island is a fun but challenging course. Not that long, but must hit it straight. Fast greens; ball will roll if you don't plan your approach and have some course knowledge.
Best part is that early morning rounds finish in 3 and 1/2 hours!
Beware Overzealous Cart Boy at Sunset
Never seen this before anywhere in the USA. Cart boy drives down the course at Sunset time of 5:20, with plenty of usable twilight left for a few holes of golfers to finish. He demands that people end their rounds so that he can put the carts away. Huh? Crazy bad customer service, and lots of cursing golfers in the parking lot packing up their clubs in bright twilight. I was the only person in my group to finish 18 holes, and we had a 12:05 tee time. Pace of play is horrible. They do not police pace of play with rangers at all, then have the gall to send cart boy out to harass groups trying to finish a long round. PATHETIC management and customer service.
Fairways and irons washers
A lot of the fairways are dirt. One should not be pentlized for hitting a fariway. Due to winter condtions and at other times, an iron washer at every three holes would be nice. Thanks You for your concerns.
Great Course
Oldest Course this side of the Mississippi, it's very nostalgic. Classic front 9, tougher back 9 greens. Tough course fun to play.
Always a fun challenge.
We went out at 7:30 a.m., so pace of play was good.
The greens, as always, were very good.
The fairways were fine, but with a few scruffy spots. This is understandable given little rain during the summer.
Our Golf Now rate was great.
If you haven't played Mare Island yet, try it. There are pretty holes, challenging holes, elevation changes, trees, no trees, lots of bunkers, few bunkers, and you get to drive through historic Mare Island.
Best kept secret
Mare island is one of my favorite courses, it's challenging well kept and simply a beautiful course. Iconsidering buying a package for everyday play here.
You will definitely love this course.
Great views.
Great views, challenging. You definitely need a cart. Very hilly back nine.
Hidden Gem, but Mother Nature Key
Beautiful challenging course due to it's variety & long par 4's. However weather report is key when playing here. Course to avoid on windy days, my drives were reaching only 150! leaves blowing all over the greens & i was disappointed the fairways were dried out, thought with the recent drought crisis, this has become the norm. I'll continue coming back for the views of the bay, sometimes you catch a ferry departing Vallejo, & the simple fact each hole plays differently whether it be sloped greens or downhill drives, it's a course worth experiencing. Bar food was average & the driving range is IRONS only. Extra star for the putting green, beautiful bay view backdrop of Marin county. Dress warm for morning rounds & expect wind to be factor. Not a walking course for sure.
Pleasantly surprised
I Great variety of holes and challenging without being unfair. Since this was my first time playing the course I was pleasantly surprised by the course. Some spectacular views for a muni course.
Where's the marshal
It's been a couple years since I've played here and the course was in nice shape after all the rain two weeks ago. I forgot about the driving range being so short that drivers weren't allowed...bummer. After playing two slow holes I reac the third tee to find it stacked up three groups deep. I figured it was just due to three being a tough par three. How wrong was I!!! We stayed three deep the rest of the way, with long waits on every tee box. Five hours later I reached hole 15 and darkness engulfed the course. No marshals ever came around to move groups along. The only staff I saw was a guy collecting aluminum from the trash cans. I mentioned the unacceptably slow play to the staff after nine and they basically turned a deaf ear to my protests. This course needs to learn how to properly space tee times and for all our sake please please hire marshals.
Fairways are coming back
The recent rains are already showing their effect on the fairways that were getting a bit ragged. New blades are sprouting aggressively. Greens continue to be well cared for. There are a few blemishes here and there, but overall, they roll quite well.
