Keep it in the fairway
Tale of 2 nine hole courses. The back is subject to the winds and is very hard and dry. Should the ball leak, you're in trouble as the 1st cut and 2nd cuts are hardpan and the ball will jump out of site
Nice Day
Weather was Great and the Course was in great shape.
Great deal, convenient location
Course was in great condition, greens smooth and fast, soft enough to hold approaches. Tees and fairways in reasonable shape, a good deal for the $.
Played in afternoon, virtually no one out there. A very pleasant round, our twosome finished easily in 3.5 hours. A beauty of a course, great views of the bay, no houses and well-maintained playing areas.
One of my top 5 places to play in the Bay Area.
Best I have seen greens
Had fun time joining three others. Have played course 4 or 5 times before and will have to say the greens were the best I have seen them ever. The fairways and tees could use a little more attention though. Overall, a very challenging course at a very fair cost. Would highly recommend the experience.
Mosquito Infestation
Bring your bug spray...
Mosquito infested... My threesome received at least 30 mosquito bites combined!
Grounds keepers are aware of the problem but told us we should have brought mosquito repellent?? Maybe this "warning" should be on the web-site?
Beautiful course. No food or drinks were being served.
Good course combination of traditional and link style
Good feature to have both traditional and link style course in one. Enjoy the beautiful at the high point of the course.
Great value, great views
Fantastic views on every hole, and a great value for $30. The course was in great condition for the value. I do wish there was more variety on the back 9 (8 of 9 holes are par 4's) but the views made me forget that. Most of the homes you can tee of with an iron because of the short but strategic holes. Fun course and I'll play there again.
This course is challenging
A great course. Challenging, but with the weather it was worth it. A lot of fun, would play again.
2 different courses
The front 9 is an old style short course. Be care of trees and most greens need a club up. Back nine long, let it rip. Great views. Well worth the drive from Sacramento. Fun and fast depending who you follow.
Nice course, but staff was kinda dickish
I've played here once or twice before. A lot of fairly short par 4s, and some longish par 3s. Overall a fun course, but kind of out of the way for me. Good value at $28 to ride, however.
Staff was a little off putting. Not particularly polite. Offered a "hotdog/soda/2beer/handful of balls" combo at the start of the round, but insisted that it could not be purchased at the turn, with no real explanation of why. Snack bar was out of all sandwiches at the turn. We were playing later in the day (tee of at 2ish), but still.
Overall, would go again, but won't make a point of it.
course was fine
course was fine greens were punched a couple weeks ago so they were a little bumpy but with a good mowing the greens will be fine other than that had a good time out there...
Island of Mares
Course is in fine shape considering the water problem in the area. Bunkers were inconsistant. Speed of the greens varied. Other than the having to follow slowest group I've ever encountered , it wasa pleasnt day
Always Thrilling
Very much like to play MI. Picturesque, interesting holes, challenging but fair, the history: All makes for a good golf vibe.
wicked par 3's
Be conservative on your tee shots and reward yourself on your approach to each green. Length while helpful is rarely necessary. Down hill holes roll out so keep the driver in the bag unless you know you can split the fairway. Most days the views are great. Back 9 is much newer and the greens run truer due to modern construction methods. Most fairways pretty thin so don't always expect a perfect lie. But, the course is fun, fun, fun to play and reasonably priced for what you get.
Great diverse course!
This is a very unique course. Front nine plays in the woods and shot placement is important while the back nine is a great links style with lots of elevation shots and wide open with stunning views!!!
fun
Had a blast! The mosquitoes found the weapon cache and are now mini birds. We were saved by the marshall and her bug spray haha. Very fun will be back again.(with bug spray)
Mare is in great condition in March 2014
Mare Island should be an easy course and it is if you get off the tee straight, I did not and had a wonderful day trying to find my ball. Oh well, my playing partner shot a best score for him and I had some excellent holes for scoring. The weather is awesome right now, although I think fall is Mares real time to shine. I walk, this is not for the faint of heart. There are some challenging uphill treks that will get your attention. We had a blast, I love this course.
Mosquitos!!!!
Greens were a little slow. Overall, the course was in great shape. The starter offered insect repellant spray. It wasn't enough. Bring lots and lots of repellant. The mosquitos are fierce as they haven't yet done anything yet to kill them off.
Mosqiuto
So bad full of mosquitos so bad wouldnt play for free
Great Time
Enjoyable round of golf with beautiful views of the surround area. Great breakfast at reasonable prices.
