Very good and challenging course
We enjoyed Mare Island Golf Club, it is a very good course and challenges every aspect of your game. This is our second time playing there and will definitely be back.
Course has great sweeping views of the Bay
The course was in good condition and I enjoyed playing. They paired me with a member and we had a good time. The rate through GolfNow was great.
Great Value, History and views
First I love Mare Island. However on this day we had a "HOT" tee time of 2:06 pm. Upon arrival we were told that there was a "shotgun " tournament in progress and that it was running over an hour late. As this did not fit our plans, we left and went to another course. We were not happy.
Nice a golf course with great views
Nice location looking at the bay and San Francisco. Weather was nice. Not crowded in the afternoon. Friendly staff.
Two different 9 hole courses
I love Mare Island. I try and play here at least once a month. It is readily apparent the course was originally 9 holes. The front nine have some tight tree lined fairways and lots of O.B.'s, The back nine are wide open with their own unique O.B.'s and ways to lose balls. Can get windy, but that adds to the challenge.
One of the best deals around!
The course is in great shape and is really challenging. Robin Nelson did a fantastic job with the redesign. Can't wait to go back!
Overall, the course is very nice and somewhat challenging.
The course has several challenging holes. Hole #16 which seems to be a relative easy hole can turn into a disaster because of how the green is nested within the hill and a gully. You can hit a super shot and end up in the gully. There is a need for some cart path repair on the front nine.
Course worthy of playing for me once a year
Mare Island's original 9 is the oldest east of the Mississippi River if I remember correctly. Some would play it just for that reason. I live rather close to the course (15 miles), so for me it's a once a year thing. There are just too many courses that I like more in the neighborhood. Hiddenbrooke, Eagle Vines, Chardonnay to name a few .... Greens were a little bumpy and the pace of play was alittle slow this time around. Fairways could be and should be in better shape. Course layout is decent, with the back 9 playing more up and down the hills.
Fun, classic course
Played this course some years back and its just how i remember it, FUN. Its short for the most part but there are a couple par 4s that play longer than the yardage would suggest, and only 1 par 5. Love the change of style on front/back 9, some TINY greens and great views. I'll always return for good times.
Great service, managed well.
Got off on time with little or no waiting. Staff was cordial and the course was managed professionally.
Mare Island is in great shape!
I played a very enjoyable round sunday morning at Mare Island. The price was great and the pace of play was wonderful for a sunday morning. The greens were in great shape as well. The course was in the best shape I have seen it. I played a couple of weeks ago just before they punched the greens but they are better now. My only complaint is with the sand in the bunkers. Very chunky. Everything else was great however. Not a 5 star establishment, but well worth 4 stars.
Don't pick a windy day and you might have fun.
Play early in the morning. If you start around noon the wind on the backside will knock you around and your slacks will flap violently in the wind. The rough area under the eucalyptus trees was branch strewn and many roots exposed..I moved my ball so I wouldn't break my wrists(in the rough). I don't get excited with up radically uphill or the opposite down hill or hitting uphill against the wind where you smash a 5 iron and it reaches its apex over the green only to come back at you when it starts to come down. Play the course in the Winter when it is calm outside.
A-One Shape
I've played Mare Island quite a bit in the past, but I was particularly impressed that it was in such very good shape this spring. Bunker sand is hard. Greens in good shape, but have a lot of tricky twists and turns. I'll be back.
The views are great!
The views are great. A few greens were bumpy, but otherwise, this course was a great value!
A must Golf Course
I've played Mare island many times, but for some reason this particular experience was by far my favorite of all the I've golfed here, Maybe because I was with my brother and haven't been able to golf together for awhile. I totally recommend this course to all who enjoy scenic beauty as well as the history that goes with it. I always look out across the bay and wonder what things were like back in the 1960's. This course is the oldest course this side of the Mississippi, pretty awesome!! Enjoy!!
The course could use some maintenance.
The greens were pretty bumpy. Cups were cut very roughly, seemed like they hadn't been changed in multiple days. Awesome views!
A challenging course which is a good value.
A challenging course which is a good value and with friendly staff.
Great features
Love the way the course lays out... Greens had been punched and hadn't recovered yet. Could have been rolled maybe. Alot of bare patches in fairways. Many greens with Blackberry bushes too close around the green. All in all...a very fun course. Will be better when greens heal
Breathtaking views, challenging holes
I have played this course on a routine basis for the past 15 years. I have always looked forward to the views from several of the tee boxes. With the subtle balance and shift of old, traditional holes to the new modified links style holes, each round always presents a set of new challenges. Ball control is a must and rewarding.
course has canllenging green
enjoyed playing @ mare island course is pretty chanllenging but it's fun to play. price is not bad i don't mind going back there. may be mare island should have e mail especial like some other course.
Mare Island has a local rule that you get free relief from an exposed root. Too bad they did't tell you that before you played!
