Great time!
Had a great time at mare island! Lots of character to this course. Didn't get bored at all. Not overly penalizing and really was a fun round of golf! Will definitely be back!
Solid test
This is a well maintained public course with some very challenging holes - It can play pretty slow at times - followed a very slow foursome - wouldnt have minded if the marshal had noticed all the open holes ahead of this foursome and suggest they let the faster groups (everyone) play thru
Mare Island Golf Course
One of my favorite courses. A challenge for sure but what a view and the course is well maintained. We play this course often.
Great views
Golf Course was in good condition but need drinking water on course also no Marshall very slow play worth playing though
Great cours to play
Greens are in a very good condition, fairways and tee boxes were good. I enjoyrd playing there verymuch
Great value near East Bay
Beautiful views of the bay on the front nine and some parts of the back. The back nine features rolling links-style play in the dunes. Challenging fairways, well placed bunkers, and undulating greens mean you'll have to bring your game to score well here.
Just over the Carquinez bridge in Vallejo, Mare Island is a great option for Golfers in the East Bay. Our round ran long but it was at least somewhat our groups fault because we kept searching for balls we duff into the brush.
Very little sand in bunkers.
I was disapointed to see maintenance worker adding sand to a rut near the cart path and finding very little if any sand in any of the bunkers. the two bunkers I had to get out of had lots of rocks in them and were hard pan. The overall condition of the fairways is good and the greens are in great shape.
I am glad to see them maintaining the rest of the course.
Disappointment fairways,greens and layout
Heard good things about this course online but it appears just hype. The course is an old nine holler laid out to take advantage of the great views. The back 9 appears newer and poorly laid out with respect to the fairways and especially the greens. Maintenance improvement is needed to bring it up to the level of a $40 + venue
Great variety of hole styles here. It is like two distinctly different golf courses in one.
Course is in good shape. The two nines are very different in design making it like playing two completely different golf courses in one. Interesting elevation changes on the back nine, with old style design on most of the front nine (small greens and tighter).
Beautiful views of the bay from most holes. Very friendly staff and good food at the snack bar. I Ike this place.
Decent track w/ good PoP
I have played this course around half a dozen times. The green fee's aren't bad. I've never found the greens in really good shape. They always have some fur on them when I've played and speed varies from green to green. The sand traps are bad, usually crusty and it's just luck to get a lie with some sand under that crust or rock hard ground. I've had lies where I couldn't use my SW because it has 13 degree's of bounce.
The staff has always been good. The practice green was in good shape and gives a good review of the track itself. The range offers an elevated shot and it runs out around 220, no fairway woods/driver allowed. Old rocks for balls.
The pace of play has always been really good for me. Two things to be aware of is playing in wet weather this course does not drain. You will have some sloppy fairway lies and plugging in the fairway is guarantee'd at least once. The wind can really blow at times out there as well.
If you don't mind poor bunkers and average greens I'd recommend this track for the $.
Scotish feel in California
The course at Mare Island is a blend of old and new. The older front 9 is a tighter, parkland style with small greens. No need to know front, middle, back yardage - just aim for the middle. The newer 9 is more open with wide, rolling fairways. Wind and elevation are factors here which make wide fairways a nice feature. Get that ball up in the air on the wrong side and watch the wind take it. Some of the greens are surrounded by mounding that allow players to get creative by playing some shots usually found only at links courses. The rough isn't penal. In fact it's really more of a problem that there isn't any rough and just huge areas of hard-pan near tree-lined areas. If you miss a fairway the hard-pan will take your ball on a wild ride - possibly into a number of lateral hazards. The course is loaded with great views of the Carquinez straights and of the Mare Island shipyard. The views are really worth the modest price and they recently added a new cart fleet. Negatives about the course are the overflowing trash cans and the numerous pitch marks that others fail to repair along with fairway divots. That's not a knock on the course but more a knock on the players that patronize it. The cafe' was closed at 3:00 PM on a Sunday - that's a real negative for anyone playing a twilight round that might want to visit for a post round beverage.
old style course
if you like to challange your self on the golf course this a
great place to play. you have to be accurate off the tee if
your not it will be hard to score. tight fairways gaurded by bunkers with small fast greens with break. theres only one
par 5 and you better score there casuse the rest of the course
if very demanding. i love this course because it makes you hit
golf shots. give it a try.
Itz a TEST
This course i known to 'kick you in the teeth'! A GR8 test when you 'think' your game is on!!
Course was in great shape, greens were running fast but true
Overcast and cool till the eighteenth but our tee time was 6:41. Good day except for the long hitters behind us. Guys, you wanted to push a threesome? Its golf, not a track meet.
A fun course with many steep hills
If you enjoy long shots up steep hills and drives off of canyon bluffs, this is the best course. With the wind and elevation shifts, it is best to play with a partner who can help with club selection. Errant shots will be lost in impenetrable hazards. Everyone should play this unique layout at least each year. It makes every other course quite simple.
Have to hit the fairways to score.
Most of the tee areas should be leveled and resodded...not many flat areas to tee it up...pretty bad shape. Greens are excellent ...fairways fair shape..grass thin in lots of areas with hardpan..beautuful views for miles around..course is in a great location...
Great mix of old front nine and new back nine
Could use better marshaling regarding pace of play
Great course for a great price
Course is in good shape.Greens are very nice and roll very true.Be prepared for the wind it was blowing strong all day.Course was a little backed up but on a Friday after a holiday it was fine. For 38 bucks with a cart this course is great! Definitely wil play again.
beat the heat
I booked the course because it was so hot in my home course and I knew it would be much cooler bay the bay and I was right ,the drive of 20 mins was well worth a day of golf in 78 weather
A little out of the way but definitely worth it!
Well maintained greens and tee boxes! Fairways are in good condition but can be better. Brilliant layout considering limited availability of land. Views are fantastic from many points on the course. The layout is fair and will reward those who plan ahead. Great course!
