tough course at great price

views are spectacular, especially if you like to take photos while you golf. great views of both bay and outdated industrial rusty old marine base structural archives. great challenge, not a long course but you have to pick you shots wisely. distance is not always key to conquer this course. very windy and going long might lead to big big trouble. stay in fairway and you still might have elevation trouble, especially on windy days. not for the novice player, yet they will love the shorter course and views. greens were rolling nice last sunday, but pin positions were on slopes and made putting very technical and difficult.

This course has a wide variety of challenging holes.

I played this course many times between 1976 and 1990 when it was a full-length, 9 hole course. It was always in good enough shape back then, but you wouldn't call it pristine. Since it was converted to an 18 hole course the maintenance has come way up - it appeals to the eye now. The new 9 holes have been blended in with pretty good respect for the original course's personality and yet in an enhancing fashion. The views of San Pablo Bay, Carquinez Straits and Mare Island Channel are fantastic.

Greens roll nice !!!!

Just played Sunday with my 8 year old daughter.
(They are junior golf friendly!!!!!)

I am a member of a private course in SF.
So I am used to fast true greens. And with a pleasant suprise.
The greens at Mare Island are GREAT!!!
Fast and true!!! I will play Mare Island again.

Good and cheap

Mare island is your basic muni. The wind is usually about 10-15mph. The elevation changes on the back nine are challenging. The Bay views are great and the staff usually let's me go out early as a single. The greens are fast and the pace of play around 5pm slows dramatically with the twilight walkers coming out. The best day is a 3:00 tee time for $20, go early, and finish before 5.

Mare Island Golf Club- A true gem in the ruff

Being able to play in the Bay area for under $30.00 is nearly extinct. With the great value that Golf now has been able to offer I have enjoyed playing this little know bay area gem in the ruff. With its tight fairways, small challenging greens and elevated tee boxes it is hard to find a better value in the SF Bay area. The food is very good and well-priced. The views off the back nine of the SF Bay are second none! Combine that with a great staff and you will find yourself coming back again and again.

The course was in good shape and is not that easy. Most holes play uphill, and there are seveal false fronts to the greens.

It was a good deal for weekend play. They keep the course in good condition.
