Mare Island Golf Club

I love playing this course, I learned how to play golf on this course. Two times within the last year I have been referred to as "HEY STUPID" once by a marshall and just recently by a groundskeeper mowing grass on the practice range. If the driving range is closed the starter in the Pro shop should not have giving me a token for golf balls. I thought the groundskeeper was picking up golf balls, at most driving ranges you can hit balls at that time. The groundskeeper mowing grass comes up to me as says "Hey stupid I have been waiting for two hours to cut this grass don't you know the range is closed . I said,"No I did not know and why did the starter give me a token for balls, and I am a customer you can't talk to me that way, his response was "stupid is what stupid does and repeated this statement several times. I finally lost my cool and said somethings that I should not have said. Groundskeeper Supervisor and Pro Shop starter gave me very weak apology . I called back after my round, 4 to 5 hours after the incident and spoke to the General Manager who knew nothing about incident. So that makes me think that Groundskeeper Supervisor and Pro Shop starter had no intention reprimanding the groundskeeper which is totally unacceptable.
This incident should have never happen and referring to your customers as "Hey Stupid" is totally disrespectful . I hope my treatment is not because I am a minority.
Before this Mare Island was my favorite course to play .

Course was hard and allowed for long rolls. Greens also hard and made greens fast. A bit of a challenge sometimes

This is not a particularly long course (6,150 yards from the back tees). There are some uphill and downhill holes where your drive will need to be accurate to find the fairway and avoid trees and /or hazards. You will also need to gauge your distance control as there are many downhill and uphill approach shots. The defense of this course is its many small undulating and quick greens. Overall, a fun course to play.

Got a great deal on golfnow.com by the way! I thought majority of the holes were quite challenging despite the fact that it was our first time. One had to play good shots to score. The front 9 was less open and the back 9 made up for that.

Despite being asked to join up with two super nice golfers in front of us, we still waited for the two geniuses in front of them. Still trying to figure out why they were playing the back tees!! I agree with some other posters that the drive up was a bit spooky (played with my 15 y/o son). All in all however a great experience. We should be back.

This is one of the many courses I play in the North-Bay area and the bang for your buck value is there if you can get on for under $40. Challenging shots, some great views, but the course needs some attention.

Positive experience, especially since we were slightly late for our tee time. The course was quiet, due to the 49er's playoff game, and we watched the ending in the clubhouse with the remaining patrons. Greens were like lightning, maybe due to no rain in a while.

Chilly day but well worth it. Best looking January course that I have played this winter. Fairways were dry as could be, greens were readable, sand was sand. I will for sure go back and play after playing it in this condition.

Carts off paths and fairways dry enough for balls to bounce and roll, greens very fast and well maintained.

Staff was friendly.
Allowed us to go out early.
Marshal was professional and allowed us to finish w/no pressure.
we were the last group on the course.

This course has great drainage for solid winter golf. Greens are fair to good and fairways stay playable even after several days of rain.

Mare island is in good condition, the fairways are challenging and the greens are rolling great!!!

This course is fun and unique. Wonderful views unlike no other in the bay area. Some marshals need to step up and do their job to keep pace of play moving. I've seen Marshals do nothing after being told that groups are playing much to slow and are holding up pace of play and they could have actually let us play ahead or told the group to speed it up.

Enjoyable round there. Great views. Cart recommended, the only drawback.

A well maintained public course, with few divets, maintained greens and nice sized fairways. The staff was very friendly and inviting. The views of Mare Island gives you some nostalgia, and allows one to wonder how the course was played with the shipyard was active. The only downsize, only 1 par 5, so few occasions to use my favorite club (the 3 wood). However, you have plenty of opportunities to bring out the big stick.

The course was in good shape. I did not realize greens were recently punched, but that was not much of an issue. I would play more often if I lived closer.

Mare Island is like playing two courses in the same day. A links style course and a wooded course. Had a good time.

The course features great views and is a pleasant golf experience.

Some tight green locations, and high tee boxes. Plays up and down hills, nice layout and always a fun shot.
