Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University
About
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State University was designed by Arnold Palmer with the help of N.C. State graduates Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson. It's home to the university's men's and women's golf teams but it's open to the public as well. It's a favorite among locals who claim it's one of the toughest golf courses in the Triangle. The course sprawls across more than 200 acres on the southernmost portion of Centennial Campus, a location that is easily accessible from I-40 and offers scenic views of the Raleigh skyline. The greens can be difficult to read and they are often framed by rough
areas and strategically placed bunkers that make them even trickier. It's an especially tough golf course to play on windy days. Lonnie Poole G.C. is a beast from the black tees but the shorter tees make it accessible for high handicappers.

Great course, but challenging. Watch out for poison ivy, it's everywhere off the fairways!

Best conditioned course in Triangle
And that includes the private clubs!
First time to Lonnie Poole. Twilight golf, but we got in 15 holes with a 5:20 tee time. Nice staff.
Course is difficult, to say the least. Course would absolutely punish high handicappers with tall (waist high) grass off most fairways. Junior tournament there this weekend, and I can already tell we;'re going to be looking for balls... a lot!
But, the condition was top notch, and the layout (5 par 5s) was memorable. One of the best around.
Thank you so much for the great review. We are glad you had an incredible time, and we hope to see you again soon! Thanks for choosing Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University.

It’s tough. The greens are fast. Beautiful layout. Very challenging. Everyone was friendly to a guy from out of town.

Save the Drive to Pinehurst. Enjoy this treat in Raleigh!
Back nine is considerably more difficult than the front. Greens are fast, which is good, but won't accept high-lifted shots with spin. Everything rolls through. Very interesting layout though.
Thanks so much for your wonderful review. We are thrilled to hear how much you enjoyed your time with us. Please visit again soon. Thanks for choosing Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University!

Tough course, bring your A-game
A beautiful facility from top to bottom. Raleigh golfers are lucky to have a place like this in their area. I'd love another crack at the course since I didn't bring my A-game.
The course itself was in fantastic condition. This is a tough track with a lot of visually intimidating holes. But if you hit good shots, you'll be in good position. I played the red tees, and they played just a little too long for me. But I feel like if I moved up to the Wolfpack tees, the course might've felt too short and not challenging enough. Perhaps the right thing to do would be to shorten the reds slightly or lengthen the Wolfpack a little.
Very few complaints about this course. One of them might be that the type of sand they use in the bunkers. I wasn't in many bunkers, maybe 4-5 shots total, but every bunker shot was a fried egg which is tough to hit out of if you're not accustomed to it. Also, it would be great if they had a place to practice chipping and bunkers prior to the round. Maybe they did, but I didn't see it.
If you're in the area, play this place. It's worth the money, and it's in tip-top shape.

Consistently Great Value
You'll use every club in the bag, especially if you're over 60 and a 15-22 handicap. There is a driving range and putting green, but no place convenient to practice chipping.
Thank you for your review. We will pass along your positive 5 star experience to our team at Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Good Greens
Bentgrass greens in good condition. Fairways greening up and filling in...still a little thin. Pace of play was not the greatest....had a foursome of younger guys ahead of us thinking they were on the PGA Tour....all dressed to the nines, playing bogey golf and taking way too many practice swings.
Guy at the counter could have been a little more friendly....
Growing the game, slowing the game seems to be the new thing at lots of courses.

Great course and friendly staff
I played for the first time at this course yesterday and walked the course. Conditions were quite windy at times and temperature in the 50s. Great course layout that is challenging for all levels of golfers (as long as you play from the right tees). Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. My only suggestion is to NOT walk this course as it is extremely hilly in several holes and the distance between holes in some cases is too long. I was pretty tired by the time I was done with the round and I'm used to walking in golf courses a lot. Other than that, it was a great experience overall.

Great course - pace of play miserably slow
Was hoping to get out by myself but they require you to join other groups if 2 or 3. Originally got paired with 2 other guys, then while we waited another 10-15 minutes to tee off a fourth joined us… could hardly get through 9 holes at twilight.

JIM BYRD REVIEW

Great layout but...
I've been playing at Lonnie Poole literally since it opened. It's a great course, and I recommend everyone play it. It can be visually intimidating, but really isn't too challenging when played from the right set of tees. The layout is 2nd to none, there are a multitude of great individual holes and for that alone, it's worth you playing. Now the but... But I find the conditions to be average at best. The course gets a tremendous amount of play, to be fair, but still there are areas of the course that make you question the price you payed to play. They've struggled with green collars and bunker collars in specific. I personally wish they would not have messed with the long grass around the bunkers, that feature alone made the course truly unique, but they were totally renovated years back to make the course more playable. Overall, the course has been great for growth of the game in the area, so I'm not here to trash the staff or anyone, but I also feel like this fantastic Arnold Palmer layout deserves a bit more TLC.
