Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University
About
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State University was designed by Arnold Palmer with the help of N.C. State graduates Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson. It's home to the university's men's and women's golf teams but it's open to the public as well. It's a favorite among locals who claim it's one of the toughest golf courses in the Triangle. The course sprawls across more than 200 acres on the southernmost portion of Centennial Campus, a location that is easily accessible from I-40 and offers scenic views of the Raleigh skyline. The greens can be difficult to read and they are often framed by rough
areas and strategically placed bunkers that make them even trickier. It's an especially tough golf course to play on windy days. Lonnie Poole G.C. is a beast from the black tees but the shorter tees make it accessible for high handicappers.

Very difficult track
Played the "red" tees and wish I hadn't. Slope of 132 but played even more difficult due to very dry conditions, hard and unforgiving greens still recovering from aeration. Sand traps had more soft sand than Caribbean beaches where your shoes sank several inches with every step. Staff was very friendly however.
Overpriced
The course layout is fabulous and a well designed Palmer course. I have no qualms with this portion of the course. It is usually pretty well kept too but I have been in the past, usually in the fall, when the course was not in good shape. The staff always seems to be a little rude or snobby in some kind of way. The range is overpriced and the course price has gone up since the addition of the new club house in the recent year. I like playing at this course and it is usually always fun but its more of a rare occasion as I think its value is poor. I used to book on GolfNow and get out here on the weekdays for $35 or weekend for $50 but that's near impossible now. You will be paying $75+ on the weekend and about $50 on the week... just too much for me to play out here frequently
Great place for golf
Great course, great view! A lot of undulations and change in elevation everywhere. Long course and right ball placement will make the difference
Great track!
I joined up with another Golf Now member and had a great time!
Played this course a few times. Can be tough. Lots of elevation changes and if you miss the green on some holes, good luck recovering. A lot of the holes you need to hit your landing spots. Very Challenging but a great course.
Great course layout with views of Raleigh
Lonnie Poole is a great course, challenging course layout with beautiful views of downtown Raleigh. Several elevation changes throughout the track, large undulating greens and very speedy, watch out for those downhill putts. Sand traps frame the fairways and greens, deep edges and thick sand so don't dig too deep with your wedge. Playable from any tee marker but it's long from the tips. Enjoyed it every time I've played it.
Hi "BKSherman" Thank you for the great review! We appreciate the great comments regarding the course conditions and overall layout, we will definitely pass along these kind words. We appreciate you coming out and playing and hope to see you again this weekend!
Got paired up with three other guys which, obviously, I expected. Little disappointed when one guy had jeans on and another a tee shirt. Good guys, but not good golfers(which they admitted and played from whites). Point is that our group really slowed up the of play. The ranger came out and told us that we needed to pick up the pace and probably let the group behind pass on a par 3; excellent job, I commend him for saying that. It's only fair because other people payed to play, too.
Walking into the clubhouse to pay, I've never seen anybody with a smile on; it's not they most inviting atmosphere, but they're aren't rude either, so it's whatever.
Course conditions: Challenging course that's well maintained even in the winter. I've played with a few higher handicaps here on different occasions, and they all seem to have a tougher day, so don't be afraid to play it forward. Plenty of tees for different handicaps.
Hi "aaustin" Thank you for the great review. We appreciate your understanding when it comes to pace of play. We also appreciate you making us aware of any customer service flaws and we will be sure to make note of it. We hope to see you again in the near future. Happy New Year.
Fun Layout
Great course fun from start to finish. The greens when I hit them were firm and rolled true. The wind made sure I second guessed every shot. Would definitely play again.
Hi "gunny64" Thanks for the excellent review. We are so glad you enjoyed your round with us today! Please come back and see us again next week.
1st time at Lonnie Poole
My son and I played this course for the first time and we thoroughly enjoyed playing this course. I had been warned to make sure I played the proper set of tees that I should handle and it did make a big difference. Plus we played with a couple guys who had played there before and that was very helpful too. The course has several risk/reward holes that make the course interesting. Plus, the Par 3's were fair for any golfer even though they may have lots of things going on to draw your attention to the danger The greens were rolling very smooth and very quick. Find your line and get her started There was someone at the 18th green to clean your clubs and give a friendly word, which is class in my book. I only wish their prices were a little lower, but I guess you can chalk it up to you get what you pay for.
Hi "David8531234" Thank you so much for the excellent review! We appreciate the great advice and we hope to see you back out on the course before the end of the year.
Stay away from the brown rough
I am not a greens keeper or a landscaper so I do not know what kind of grass the tough is, but DON'T go there! Stay in the fairway. The tough will eat your ball. You will be standing directly over your ball in the tough and will not see it. Lol. Kind of frustrating. But other than the tough, it's a gun course but very challenging. The clubhouse and proshop are nice and the staff was friendly enough. Players need to make sure they fix their ball marks. Too many ball marks on the greens. Not the fault of the greens keeper though. I will play again. It plays a bit slow, I guess due to the difficulty of the course. If your ballgies into the tough, you will spend a bit of time trying to locate it.
Hi "Slickpack " Thank you for the great feedback, the rough is very difficult. The course can be easy if you are hitting it straight, but if your not it can be a long day. We appreciate the kind words and hope to see you again soon.
Always Fun
One of my favorite places to play in central NC Love the Arnold Palmer Design; challenging yet fair. Large greens; quick but consistent. Could tell bent greens have recovered from summer thinning Very friendly place.
Hi "dmoalong" Thank you for the great review. We appreciate the kind words regarding our staff and overall course conditions. Don't forget to book your next online tee time with us!
WolfPack World
Nice course. Excellent facility overall. Staff excellent. Several greens in bad shape. One par 5 had to be played as a par 3 due to roped off areas of the fairway.
Hi "u000007953337" We appreciate your honest review. We will definitely pass along the kind words regarding our staff and overall course conditions. We appreciate your patience as we are currently heading into our fall transition. The greens will be improving very shortly. Please come back and see us again soon.
Interesting course
Second time playing this layout. Many interesting and challenging holes. Fairways were in great shape but many of the greens were in poor condition considering the cost of play. GPS device on cart did not work though one on cart we switched to after first nine was fine. Has been a bad year for greens in this area but would have thought that the NC State course would not have had such problems.
Hi "u000008104530" Thank you for the 5 star review. We appreciate your honest feedback as we are constantly looking to improve overall conditions. As the course goes into its fall transition we hope to see you back out on the course soon.
Nice Course and facilities
Love this course probably because I was actually playing well when I played.. Course can be challenging need accuracy. Clubhouse was very cool especially if you are a state fan. Driving range is definitely one of the neatest in the area. Even the golf carts have alot of amenities. Gps screen with ranges and keep score on them ball washers etc very nice. Pace can be pretty slow. Greens need some tlc. Scenery is awesome. Ate dinner there also and it was amazing. Course is not in as nice of shape as Finley but all of the other things carts, range, food, scenery, clubhouse every other aspect is better than Finley which in my opinion make it much better.
Hi "Patrick8252979" Thank you so much for the 5 star review. We appreciate the great feedback as we are always making the necessary arrangements to keep the facility in proper shape. Thanks for the review hope to see you again in the near future.
Lonnie Poole 9/13, greens still are poor
First time here. Had out of town friends here and wanted something special for a round before we left on our annual fall golf trip so I got a $47 rate on GolfNow.
Good news and then the bad.
Good: Layout is fantastic. However, IMO the course is very hard, even selecting the right tees. Lots of forced carries and most greens are well protected. Rough is not tall but ball settles down in the Bermuda making it very difficult to find. Tee boxes and fairways in excellent shape. Driving range is nice. Grill is nice and food was great.
Bad: I asked twice before booking how were the conditions of the greens based on reviews i read here. I was told they were healing up and maybe 2 we still iffy. Maybe not good to look at but playable. Well IMO that was way off. Almost every green was damaged to some extent and most had some damage. Were they unplayable? No, but they were very rough and I am disappointed the staff made them out to be much better then they were. I would not have played there if I knew the conditions as they were. Also, Grill room service was very slow and they were not busy. Not sure what the problem was.
Would I go back. Maybe, once I knew the greens were truly back.
I would NOT recommend this course to anyone over a 18 handicap. Way too hard. However a great track for the good golfer.
Hi "ncbrownie" We appreciate your honest feedback regarding the course and customer service today. We did not intend to give you the wrong impression regarding the greens as we believe they are still healing due to the harsh summer we have had. Once fall approaches and the weather starts to cool down the greens will be back in better conditions. We hope that your ill gibe us another try in the near future. thanks
Need to replace greens
I've played this course a lot. Love the layout. Definitely one of my favorite courses to play in this area, if not my favorite. The course is usually in great shape. They had some issues with their fairways last year but that was because of the harsh winter we had the previous winter. Their greens usually are the bright spot but this year, the greens are garbage, and I don't mean to sound harsh, but they were garbage. They have lost most of the greens and I'm not sure they will recover. Likely they will have to do what just about every other reputable course in this area has done and replace the greens to bermuda. I'm usually happy paying 40 bucks to play this course because I think it's a good deal for a great layout. But I was really bummed I payed that much to play on those greens. I won't be going back until the greens are in better shape and I hate saying that because it's a great course. I can't continue to pay higher prices to play dead greens. Unfortunate. I listed that I would recommend this course to a friend, and I would with the caveat that I wouldn't pay more than 25 bucks to play there until their greens are playable.
No. Not for 40 bucks. I love the course, but not paying that price until greens are better. I felt lied to the last time I played because I expected conditions that would equal a $40 round on a weekday and I did not get that. I understand the summer was bad, I get it. But the price didn't match the quality and I'm a little bitter, that's all. I'm hoping to get back out there once the greens are better but I doubt it'll be this year for me. Sorry. Best of luck.
HI "nmbr1dkfn" We apologize for your recent experience out on the course today. This summer the greens have taken on a extensive amount of heat and moisture. We appreciate your patience as we are starting to transition into our cooler fall season where the greens will be back in excellent conditions. Please come back and give us a try in the next few weeks.
Great layout
First time playing Lonnie poole but definitely not the last the layout is a beautiful course with nice views the tee boxes were great and the fairways were top notch the bent grass greens needed some loving but they are hard to maintain in the harsh Carolina summer All that said I give it 8 out of 10 stars
Hi "u000001801753" Thank you so much for the great review! We hope to see you back out on the course in the near future.
Burnt everything
They have lost a majority of their greens. Before you pay an expensive rate, they should warn you that the greens are burned out and are sanded. The fairways were in great shape but overall you couldn't putt on the mushy, sandy greens. Try somewhere else before you spend $60+ to play here. It's not worth it.
Hi "Dalton7187591" We apologize about your experience today out on the course. We appreciate your patience as our course is going through its summer transition. We hope that you will give us another try come fall.
Hi "onedonboy" Thank you for the 4 star review. We really appreciate the great feedback.
