Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University
About
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State University was designed by Arnold Palmer with the help of N.C. State graduates Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson. It's home to the university's men's and women's golf teams but it's open to the public as well. It's a favorite among locals who claim it's one of the toughest golf courses in the Triangle. The course sprawls across more than 200 acres on the southernmost portion of Centennial Campus, a location that is easily accessible from I-40 and offers scenic views of the Raleigh skyline. The greens can be difficult to read and they are often framed by rough
areas and strategically placed bunkers that make them even trickier. It's an especially tough golf course to play on windy days. Lonnie Poole G.C. is a beast from the black tees but the shorter tees make it accessible for high handicappers.

Great course. Great value
I had been wanting to play Lonnie Poole for while, and had a chance on a recent business trip to Raleigh. Frankly I was more than pleased. LOVED the course, even though I did not play particularly well that day. Challenging course, but multiple tees allow you to match to your game/skill level. Local knowledge on some holes would be helpful for next time...and there definitely will be a next time. Lots of topography variety, greens in good shape. I would highly recommend the course.
pace of pksy
Way too slow. Twe times too close together. Need a Marshall to keep track. People playing the tips and can't get off the twe box.
Give this course a few more weeks
The grass is still dormant, but the course is playable and the greens are rolling true. Brand new club house and grill. Very nice staff. We played behind a foursome who eventually let us play through and the two of us walked off in just about 4 hours. I really wish i could have seen it when it was totally green. Nice views of downtown.
GREAT TRACK
Great lay out. Staff is vey out going and friendly.
Does it Matter
Did not enjoy being behind all the NC State and Duke walkers. Why would they do this on a Sunday when everyone wants to get home for the Super Bowl? Doesn't matter what I say as nobody will respond or care what I think...
Challenging course
Beautiful course with skyline of Raleigh visible on many holes. Course plays long and many hazards to overcome. If you are going to score well at Lonnie Poole you had a 225 yard drive and a 225 yard three wood to a well bunkered green on most par 4 holes. Par 5 holes are over 500 yards so long and straight is good. Great course but vary challenging. Great location and great staff and amenities. Plan to play again soon.
This course has fantastic view of city skylines
Great course with really nice greens, but was only abled to play only 15 holes due to frost delay and frozen greens. Management did provided free range balls to keep us occupied. One of my favorite courses in Raleigh area.
Great course
Had a great time playing the course. Will definitely play again.
restaurant service horrible
the service in restaurant was horrible. The foods they prepared is also terrible.
First class experience
My first round at this course. Facilities and course are first class. The course is in great winter condition. Largest sand traps I have experienced so beware and stay clear of them. My round was cart path only what a bummer, can't wait to play again but under dry conditions.
Fun course
Good layout and in good condition.
Greens have a lot of ball marks. Sand in traps soft, good for advanced golfers hard for the average golfer.
Challeging but amazing
The bunkers are really scaring! In some holes, you could see the bunkers bigger than the fairway.
One of the best in the RTP area
This was my second time around Lonnie Poole and it was a real pleasure. Previous round was marred by slow play that left us unable to finish, but less crowds this time let us get done in about 3:40. This course is designed well - the hard holes are very long and very difficult but there are scoring opportunities too if you can take advantage of them. I am typically happy breaking 100 so by no means an expert, but breaking 90 out here is within reach for me if I played smarter than I did today (lay up, dummy!). Greens are fast but fair, and staff is all great. Pricey normally but with a hot deal a great value, especially as it is so centrally located for the Raleigh area.
Nice Course
The course was in great shape and played well. Great price too
This course is by far one of the best in the area
People are frendy and for the time of year the course is in great shape. The club house is the best that I have seen. Would like to see cheeper rates for the winter
Caddis
Course was as good as it can be in the winter dormant state. . Forgiving off the tee on most holes . Challenge came on the greens and approach shots. Great view of Raleigh skyline on a number of holes on the back nine. Would love to play again in prime growing season. Staff was friendly and helpful.
My first experience with Lonnie
I probably should have done some research on the course design etc. before trying to play this course but that's not how I usually choose where I play. I had an old friend coming in for the weekend and we had played Finley a month or so ago on his last visit so I thought it would be fun to try Lonnie Poole. I think the course is what they wanted, but is way too unforgiving for a recreational golfer, very narrow and once you get off the second cut you either drop another ball and go on or do the easter egg hunt deal. All four of us had some issues keeping the ball in play and once you missed the fairway even by a yard you probably would never see your ball from that shot again. My first shot off the first tee was a wonderful blast that was farther than my next opponent by fifty or sixty yards, I was ecstatic. But I missed the left side of the fairway by two yards at the most, first ball drop... The foursome behind us we noticed had a fifth person that was just walking ahead of the players spotting the ball. Something I had never seen before, but now understand. They had obviously played the course before. My friend and I had had enough by nine and headed for the clubhouse. We had found a forgotten wedge by a previous group and we were going to turn it in to the lost and found. The two guys we were playing with, had also mentioned that they had been given a great rate for the afternoon when they found out we had booked through GolfNow at 69 per person. They only paid 44 dollars apiece, the special afternoon rate at LP. However our discussion with the boy in the clubhouse was less than encouraging. He insisted that we had contracted with GN and that was our rate, he could not change it. I know that is not the policy with other courses in the area, they have told me of their lower rate and honored that on several occasions, when I paid for the round. The only other thing I want to mention was about the carts. Carts were new and in good condition, however the GPS did some weird things, stopping us from driving in certain areas and the screen was locked so it would not tell us yardage and course hazard data that is usual. That was just our cart, the other cart's GPS assist seemed to be functioning as normal. Hope your experience is a better one than ours.
Love This Course
Lonnie Poole will never bore you. There's a challenge on every hole, try it you'll like it. I would recommend this course for an intermediate golfer as hitting the fairways is crucial.
The fairways are turning dormant however greens are still in great shape.
Lonnie Poole has improved greatly
The last time I played Lonnie Poole was before their new clubhouse was built and I thought that the course at that time was very hard. Now they have the new club house built, and it is beautiful, they have also done some course improvements. One that I greatly appreciate is they took all of the "love" grass out! Before there was "love" grass in the sand traps and it was extremely unfair, I thought. Now all of the sand traps are beautiful, if you aren't in them, and the course plays much fairerr. They have also taken alot of woods out and opened up areas around the greens. The course is very nice and now rates as one of my favorites and a little better the UNC Finley, and I'm a UNC fan...The carts all of gps and maps of the course!
Great Course
We enjoyed our vist to LP.
The staff was very friendly from the Bag drop - to the Check in - to the Starter. The course was wonderful. The GPS in the Carts was very helpful. We got a great deal on Golfnow and we look forward to coming back soon.
I couldn't help myself on commenting on this less than accurate review.
First, more than enough room for an average player to keep the ball on grass at Lonnie Poole. If you're having problems keeping the ball on grass work on your game, don't rip the course design.
Second, the way GolfNow works is they buy the hotdeal times directly from the course so when you purchase that time GolfNow receives the money directly. The longer you wait to purchase the tee time the lower the price one usually receives. Absolutely nothing to do with Lonnie Poole or their staff.
Lastly, many carts are set up to keep golfers off of certain parts of the course they should not be.
Really, a 1 star review for a golf course you can handle, purchasing a tee time then complaining about the price, and carts not going into a restricted area that you wanted to go.
Disappointed with people who trash golf courses for reasons like this. Lonnie Poole Golf Course deserves better!!
