Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University
About
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State University was designed by Arnold Palmer with the help of N.C. State graduates Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson. It's home to the university's men's and women's golf teams but it's open to the public as well. It's a favorite among locals who claim it's one of the toughest golf courses in the Triangle. The course sprawls across more than 200 acres on the southernmost portion of Centennial Campus, a location that is easily accessible from I-40 and offers scenic views of the Raleigh skyline. The greens can be difficult to read and they are often framed by rough
areas and strategically placed bunkers that make them even trickier. It's an especially tough golf course to play on windy days. Lonnie Poole G.C. is a beast from the black tees but the shorter tees make it accessible for high handicappers.

Unique course in the area
Lonnie Poole is a tough course if you aren't in the fairway. The long worry grass and numerous sand trap/waste areas make this course a unique challenge from others in the triangle
Tough but fair
I played my first round at LP and it was terrific. The course is tough but fair. It is well groomed. The greens are smooth, true, and fast. The facilities are beautiful. The price was fair for the experience. I look forward to going back soon.
Surprising new updates since I was last here
I hadn't been here since the new clubhouse was opened. Let's just say I'm glad they had signed pointing me to the Pro Shop because this place is huge. The carts are new since I had been here as well, they are the same type of cart as before and still have the ball and club washer as well as the foot cleaner, but they now have a tablet mounted in the center that tells distance to the center of the green and can be used to keep score. They are also GPS tracked, so if you try to drive the cart somewhere that you shouldn't it will warn you and then disable the cart so you can't go any further. There was one place on the cart path on the Hole 6 where the cart started to disable despite being on the cart path. We did make it up the hill without too much fuss but it goes to show that GPS isn't always super accurate.
One thing that I was a bit disappointed about was that Hole 8 was completely close for bunker construction. They are in the process of redoing the sand in all of their bunkers. The places with new sand looked really nice, bright white and the sand was powdery fine. Very easy to lose a ball in if you aren't watching carefully. Hole 1 also is under bunker reconstruction, but was still open for play.
The rest of the course was in great condition. My brother works for a nice private course in Charlotte and every time I golf with him he is showing me stuff that would never fly at his course, and the only thing that he had to complain about yesterday was that the grounds crew were out watering the greens while we were shooting for the greens.
All in all, we had a lot of fun playing this course and was well worth the money I spent on Golf Now. I don't know that I would be happy paying full price to play here, but the course is in great condition minus the construction.
Beautiful course
Very scenic ... fairways and greens in excellent shape. They're doing some work and #8 is closed. Working on traps in other parts of the course, but it didn't detract much from the overall experience.
Good but not worth price
If you're an nc state fan you'll love it otherwise it's just not worth it. Good course and maintained well just to expensive
This course was a disaster...
Everything was unorganized from the minute we got there. Lack of directional signs, complete un-organization by the starter, multiple holes under complete construction, multiple holes on front 9 (played second) with no tee box markers, played a par 5 as a par 3, complete chaos. Worst time I've had playing golf in a long time due to the sheer frustration of just trying to figure out what is going on. This place really needs to get it together because it is a great course layout, just not being run well at all.
Former PGA Professional
Terrible!!! Don't play here!
The greens were aerated and two of the holes were closed. When I talked with the staff about two holes being closed, they gave me a canned answer about the green fee being reduced from $80 to $50. Since I used Golfnow and paid $38, the argument didn't impress me. I had called the day before and asked about the greens and been assured that they weren't too bad. I guess if I were in Scotland a hundred years ago they'd be fine. If you pay for 18 holes, shouldn't you be allowed to play them. There are much better places to play for the money.
Could be better
I always leave this course wondering how State could have a turf management school. The course could be so much more, with better tee boxes, better maintained greens and such.
Also, the bunkers were being rebuilt, so several were closed on the front nine.
I like this course, but only when I get a discounted price, because normal conditions don't warrant the higher tee time costs.
Poole under construction
Didn't know they just punched the greens until after I paid for the round. A heads up would have been good!! Lots of construction on the front 9 Re doing a lot of bunkers and #7 turns from a tough par 5 into a 150yard par 3. Hitting around the renovations got to be irritating. Quite surprising since the course isn't that old.
Not Fair
The course was under renovation. They shouldn't open to public. One hole was closed and one hole we need to tee off from the middle of fairway. When I got this deal from GolfNow, I thought I got a good deal. But after I played, I found it wasn't a good deal. If the course was under renovation, it should be stated. Aeration was marked, but the renovation wasn't stated at all. Not fair!!
Beautiful Course
This golf course was overall in awesome condition. A few of the tee boxes were sketchy and some of the collars around the green were patchy, but for the most part, the fairways and greens were almost perfect. We were sent out as a twosome and ended up playing through two foursomes and a twosome to finish up in less than 3:30. We looked back from the 18th green and saw the first foursome six or seven holes behind us...so I think slow play might be an issues here. The only issue I had was that the third hole was completely closed due to bunker construction. Didn't find that out until the starter mentioned it. Would have been good to hear from the pro shop first.
Nice Course
The gps system on the cart faded out and was not visible in the bright sunlight. Two pair of tee boxes were confusing. One on the front and one on the back. Once you play the course you understand. The 3rd hole was closed for a bunker repair but it appears you could still play around it. It was like any other course maintenance.
Awesome course!
Overall from tee-to-green, the course is in outstanding condition. If you play the right set of tee's this course is not that hard.
Challenging but fun
Hands down, the best course on the area. It will kick your butt but a great course!
Great Day for Golf
First time playing the University Course. I will come back.
Staff was friendly, provided a super overview of what to expect.
Challenging and fun course. Greens were in great shape.
One downside was a foursome in front that had family in tow. Slowed the pace, and wish the course would monitor when a family is brought on to the course. I have no objection to family members including children enjoying the day. However, children where running on green, and spouses taking time.
Manly course!
This is a gem of a course. Nice piece of property. Not for the faint of heart! Wind will fool you on some holes where you are protected by the trees. New clubhouse and grill offer amazing skyline views of Raleigh. Recommended highly!
Good First Impression
Play was slow, but the course was in good shape and quite a challenge. Will come back when fairways are not dormant.
Lots of bunkers!!
Problems Encountered with Golf Now
I booked (and paid) for a tee time for mysone and myself. When we arrived at the course, the gentleman who checked us in told us that the front 9 holes were closed for airation. And asked if Golf Now had set that expectation. I said NO. He asked if we wanted to play, or if we wanted a refund. While disappointed with GOLF NOW, my son and I both agreed to play the back 9 twice. Once we got started pace was OK, but we waited about 30 min due to people making the turn. I will go play this course again, the layout is great, and even with the dormant NC conditions, the greens were in great shape!
Lonnie Poole
Excellent course. A little wet but that was to be expected. Great staff. State of the art new clubhouse. Tough track but fair. Maybe the best the course has to offer is great staff. Make sure you can hit approaches off of undulated surfaces...not too many flat areas at Lonnie Poole.
New Clubhouse
Course was in good condition for winter. Greens a little spongy, fairways dormant but full. Challenging course....stay out of the bunkers.....the native grass in them makes them even tougher! Factor in the wind when it's blowing SW or NE. Good deal with GN or at twilight rate.
