Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University
About
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State University was designed by Arnold Palmer with the help of N.C. State graduates Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson. It's home to the university's men's and women's golf teams but it's open to the public as well. It's a favorite among locals who claim it's one of the toughest golf courses in the Triangle. The course sprawls across more than 200 acres on the southernmost portion of Centennial Campus, a location that is easily accessible from I-40 and offers scenic views of the Raleigh skyline. The greens can be difficult to read and they are often framed by rough
areas and strategically placed bunkers that make them even trickier. It's an especially tough golf course to play on windy days. Lonnie Poole G.C. is a beast from the black tees but the shorter tees make it accessible for high handicappers.

Excellent
Course was in in fantastic shape. The greens were a little quicker than usual, but that is what made it a little different from the other times I have played it.
Not your average course
Great course,very challenging,would be tough to walk.cart gps is best I've seen.bring your A game !!
Great for the price!
GolfNow had LP for $27. Couldn't pass that up. The course was in great condition. The greens were nice and fast but very true. When putting, don't play the break, because it won't break!
Oh yeah, avoid the bunkers, it's real sand.
Must play!
Always a treat playing here. We got on late in the afternoon and was not able to play all 18 holes but I would go back anytime. Excellent experience. Not for the faint of heart! This course can (and will) eat your lunch!
One and (probably) done!
First of all, let me just say that I could normally not afford to play this course, but when a GolfNow offering popped up for $30/person, I jumped at it, as it's usually $60-80/round. The guys who were paired with us were much the same, as they won a round as a gift at some event, but get this - they still had to pay $25 each to share a cart. Really, NCSU? REALLY?? That being said, let's get through the obvious - the course was incredibly beautiful and pristine. Some of the vistas were breathless. The natural and native areas throughout the course are superbly placed and absolutely increased my enjoyment. The onboard gps was perfect! What lessened my enjoyment was the lack of instructions from the staff (who knew we were first-timers) - we weren't advised where to buy snacks, where to go to grab our cart, that we were paired with anyone and to wait for them. Also disappointing was the unusual number of golfers on the course with boom-boxes blasting bad country music - seems like a course ranger would occasionally meander by to check on such things but none was ever around. Overall, it was really good. Better customer service would have made it just about perfect. I'm "one and done" mostly because I'll probably never find a deal like that again. There are great golf deals out there, but NCSU obviously likes to weed out us scrubs by regularly asking a king's ransom to play Lonnie Poole. BTW - I'm a big Wolfpack fan and broke 90 on my outing.
One of the best courses in the area
I am a little biased as I am a member at LP. The work that has gone on to renovate the bunkers and tee boxes since May is really beginning to pay off. Not only is it a visually stunning course it is playing really well too.
On the playing front there are a few holes that are suited to the bombers out there but generally it requires thought and shot shaping to score well. It takes a few rounds to get a feel for the undulations in the fairways and knowledge of good positional play. So keep coming back.
Great course, overall.
The course is designed amazingly, and makes you show up with your A-game.
Currently, they are doing work on the course, so the conditions are a little rough in spots; but I can't wait to see the final product.
The greens were punched, so it was a little rough, in that aspect.
There is a touch screen GPS in each cart. that made a world of difference in my game. I never want to golf again without it!
Overall, the normal rates are a little steep, considering the amount of other good-quality courses in the area; but it is absolutely worth the splurge, occasionally!
Challenging Course
I am a 14 handicap and fon this a fun challenge. I played with some members of the course so they helped me navigate and choose shots.
The course is user construction in spots for improvements. Other than that it is in beautiful shape.
Great day on the links!
Thoroughly enjoyed the round. Great staff and the layout of the course is spectacular! Very picturesque and challenging but fair. Greens were perfect and fast. Would definitely play it again!!
Nice course with lots of elevation changes
Played this course for the first time yesterday. Really nice course. Fairways and greens were in good condition. Currently back 9 is having sand for the traps changed out and 2 holes were not playable, but still had a great time on the course. Fairways are nice and wide to accommodate any level of golfer. Play from the back tee markers would be a really tough and long play.
Bunker and Tee Box renovation in progress
They are in the middle of a bunker and tee box renovation. I was not happy to find 2 holes closed due to bunker renovation and allot of tee boxes closed due to being re-soded. It would have been nice to know this up front
Will be good once repairs are done
The course was currently refurbishing the sand traps and fairway bunkers on holes 12 and 13. Those holes were actually closed and we didn't get to play them. We knew going in that they were closed but still chose to play there. The course has lots of elevation changes and tons of fairway bunkers so you better hit them straight. The guy I played with lost many balls in our round. I lost 3 myself. I believe once the course finishes all of the repairs they are making that it will be a course we will want to play again. They said that all repairs are supposed to be completed by September.
Lonnie Poor
Course was under serious construction... 2 holes completely closed, tee boxes dug up, construction equipment everywhere. Greenskeepers decided to change hole locations while I am playing the hole instead of waiting till after I finished.... Play somewhere else...
Young good course that will be very good
The course is only 5 years old. During my round, the course bunker improvement construction was talking place which cause some minor issues. Ultimately, I believe it will become a very good and challenging course when it matures.
Turmoil
I know there is a course alert symbol for LP but you have no idea.
LP is in the process of removing all those "natural areas (with weeds), and replacing them with standard type bunkers. All of them...and there are a lot.
There were 2 holes closed completely. 2-3 more had construction on the bunkers going on and you played those holes among the workers. There were a total of 4 tees closed having been rebuilt and freshly resodded, so those holes all played extremely short. Also all the bunkers that have been reworked have new white sand that hasn't had time to settle, so they were extremely difficult to play out of. There was a constant buzz of tractors, work vehicles, etc going back and forth all during the round. It's good to see they are working to improve the course, but all this combined was not conducive to an enjoyable round of golf.
I would not recommend playing there to anyone until next year.
And no reduction in the fees to boot! hmmmmm
dissapointed
Unfortunately I was very disappointed with the day, Prior to booking I specifically contacted the course asked about the disruptions that were the focus of a couple prior reviews about the course and was assured that they would not be anything that would disrupt our round. BOLD FACE LIE, the course is under major renovation many holes had work crews on them, 2 of the par 4 holes had to be played as par 3s, other holes had tee boxes moved all the way to forward tees for everyone. Many holes(over 1/2) had extensive areas of the hole that were under reconstruction. I could see where the course could be very nice. Its unfortunate that the staff used the obviously coached/ canned response to the question of conditions to mislead people into playing the course when it is nothing close to as advertised
Great Course, soon to be Greater
I really enjoyed my first round on this course. Although I wasnt able to finish my full 18, I had a great time with the high quality golf carts with digital displays inside. Very nice touch. I would definitely recommend this course to a friend but would probably suggest they wait until all the maintenance is completed. Many of the holes were being worked on when I played and one of the holes was converted to a par 3 from a par 5 so that folks wouldnt be swinging into the maintenance guys. That is totally acceptable though because a student on the golf team told me that they are getting the course up to the level of conditions required for a state tournament and that once the updates are finished, the course will be very impressive. I look forward to playing this course when that happens!
This course is currentky under renovation
Lonnie Poole Golf course is normally a great place to play. they recently built a state of the art clubhouse and are in the process of redoing most of the bunkers. there were 2 holes closed and a couple of holes that they set up as a par 3 from the fairway (of a par 4). I love this course but had I known this renovation was going on I would not have played here. It looks like this will last the entire summer, so I advise anyone who plays here to beware.
Lonnie Poole
on a scale of 1to 10....A+ a TEN...
great course .great facilities
great food..great employees...
Amen!! They don't tell you when you call to make a tee time that only 16 1/2 holes are open. They wait until you get there and have your money in hand until they drop this on you.
Oh, and then they still charge you full price on top of that! Lonnie Fool will never see me again.
