Laurel Hill Golf Club
About
Laurel Hill Golf Club has some of the best conditions of any public course in the area, which is why it is popular amongst the locals. It is hard to believe that the club sits where the DC Department of Corrections facility at Lorton used to be located. The layout has a traditional design, but unlike older golf courses it runs a lengthy 7,102 yards from the back tees. The greens are lightning fast and undulating. There is defined contouring throughout the course, which allows for some interesting holes. Although the fairways are wide open they are still punishing towards errant shots. There are dramatic elevation changes throughout the golf course, making a flat lie nearly impossible to find. The course provides a formidable test for even the most seasoned players.

Hole 16, Par 3, 185 yards Photo submitted by EthanZimman on 06/17/2013
Magnificent Muni
I don't play the course often because it usually commands a high fee, especially for a muni. However, we had a "Hot Deal" Golfnow price and started about three hours before sunset, yet we still got it in. Considering it was late in the day the greens were less than perfect, but the course was in great shape, especially for the price. I'd recommend the course anytime, but it's a much better value when you can score a "Hot Deal".
great course
Always enjoy playing here. The greens can us some patching but overall very satisfied.
Nice layout, good scenery
The course had a nice layout. Some long par 4's mixed in with a few easier ones. Par 3's were challenging with the elevation changes. Few par 5's were 3 shot holes and others you could get to in two. Greens were fast and true, people could use a lesson on fixing ball marks though. Bunkers had nice sand, just maybe not enough. Fairway bunkers were placed very well to catch the errant tee shots.
Enjoyable course, used every club in the bag, would play again if the price was better. Even with a golfnow deal it was pricey.
First time playing a great course
It was the first time I played this Fairfax County course. I had a great time. It could have been more challenging if I hadn't played with someone who has played the course before and gave some very helpful hints. I am a casual player and play probably 2 to 3 times a month. I was hitting the ball great and chipped it on the 18th green even though it was raining. The facilities were great. The only concern I have about the course applies to the users. The greens could have been better if the player would repair their ball marks. However, it was a challenging and fun course to play and I will play it again.
big boy golf course
marginal shots WILL BE PUNISHED. you can score in places, and you can put up big numbers in others. you will be faced with shots that don't fit your eye, sooner or later. you'll know the state of your game as you play, and when you're finished.
Great Public/County Course
This course carved out of old Prison grounds so that is unique. It is a really great course. It has challenging holes and focused putting is a must for scoring. A few forced carries off tee but fair if getting ball up into air. Visually attractive and quiet course. Do have a GPS or Laser Range Finder with you because yardage markers are intermittent and there are no 150 yard poles for determining distances to green. Greens roll true and a little fast. Like a lot of public courses would be better if people would fix their divots! Wonderful Northern Virginia option for golf-- better than many of the Myrtle Beach courses.
Greens need maintenace
The greens were pretty chewed up. For what we paid, I would have expected something better.
Beautifully Tough Course
Stunning course which is well cared for yet is very challenging for playing on the first round. Lots of undulating hills and blind tees which often play 2 clubs more (or less) than the yardage would suggest. I recommend playing with someone who knows the course and try not to get too fancy. Keep it in play as the rough...is rough. Don't expect to find your ball if it travels a few feet into the rhubarb...it is gone.
Great Course
Nice wide fairways, large well kept greens and a longer than average holes is how I think of this course. It was a great day for golf last Saturday and we highly enjoyed our round.
Fell short of high expectations
I was slightly disappointed, considering the high reviews it's got on this web-site. It's above average, but certainly not five-star worthy.
Firstly, if you go to play, make sure you bring your own clubs. The mix of clubs I was provided can at best be described as eclectic: a worn out Titleist sand wedge, a good set of regular flex Bridgestone J40s (5-PW), a reg-flex Ping G20 4 iron and hybrid (both with massive off-sets), a stiff-shaft Ping 3-wood, grip worn out, and a regular flex Driver. It is, perhaps, asking a lot from a municipal course, but for $35 I was expecting at least a complete set of golf clubs. Getting some decent stiff-shafted irons is surely not too much to ask.
The course itself was very challenging and fair. The rough is quite brutal, so you are rewarded for being accurate from tee to green. The condition of the course was pretty good. I'm not a huge fan of the grass in the fairways and rough, but it was in decent condition.
The greens ran relatively true, but there were pitch marks everywhere. The 18th green was full of geese-poo.
It was a good course, but how it can be given 5 stars is beyond me. There are too many niggling negatives: no proper rental clubs, no proper starter, no pin sheets offered, no course guides, no dramatic holes, no scenic views, not a particularly welcoming staff.
It's all about golf here.
Very demanding. Tests all facets of your game. Absolutely wonderful golf course. Play this course!
This course is excellent - keep up the great work!
I had another fantastic round of golf at Laurel Hill. My threesome had no issues. I always love when the grass area of the driving range is open - that was an added bonus!
Laurel Hill, keep up the great work!
Still in good shape
Grass in great shape. Traps need more sand. Many ball marks on green, but they don't affect play. Great course still for weekday play and price.
This course has great features
Very Good course and look easy but difficult course
5 STAR - MUST PLAY
My new favorite track in the DMV. OUTSTANDING! Immaculate conditions. Layout offers a variety of holes. I really enjoyed the challenge. Fast greens with some undulations, but nothing to the point where its not fair. This track is very long so you should probably tee it forward from your usual tees. Can't wait to come back.
Great Day at Laurel Hill
The golf course is very challenging and an excellent choice for your golf experience. You can't beat this course for a PUBLIC golf experience.
Laurel Hill
Great course and fantastic staff. Great value for a well manicured course. Some holes provided difficulty and other holes just wide open to swing away. Will definitely play again at this course.
Play from the Appropriate Tees
A well-designed course, LHGC takes advantage of the existing terrain and elevation changes. The course can play from about 5,500 to over 7,000 yards, so it is IMPERATIVE that golfers play from the appropriate tees.
I saw a foursome playing from the Blue tees; these guys should have been playing a pitch-and-putt course!
The pace-of-play issues are invariably because a couple of groups are playing from tees that are beyond their abilities.
I regularly play form the Gold tees (6,000 yards) in the early season and Blue tees (6.700 yards) in the warmer weather.
Hat-tip to the course superintendent and his groundskeepers for maintaining the course in good condition all year long. Last year's bunker renovation project was a huge success, in my mind.
Now, if golfers would only replace or repair their divots in the fairways, rake the bunkers and fix ball marks on the greens ...
The staff is pleasant and the marshals very engaging and helpful.
I can see why the USGA selected Laurel Hill for the 2013 Public Links Championship!
A round of expectations.
I was underwhelmed by the staff. It started with the lack of a welcome, through the check in, the starter, and ended with a grumpy reception at the grumpy reception at the club house. . The friendliest staff interaction was at the bar.
The course is wonderfully challenging. The fairways and greens were in great need of players filling divots and repairing ball marks.
Course in great shape
Great shape, needed marshall to pick up the pace of play!
