A great day
awesome place to golf. The grounds crew did a great job for being flooded out, can't wait to play more rounds this summer.
Nice course, great value
Redwood Canyon is a hidden gem in the Northern hills of Castro Valley. A flat course with modest challenges, it can easily be walked. Not in the best of conditions when I went, probably die to the crazy winter, but clearly they were working hard to get it in good condition. Greens were perfect.
Under repair
This course could be much nicer but it seems the maintenance has not been kept up. Far to much of the fairway and rough is dirt and not well cared for. There was excavating on the 10th hole and workers on another hole, many holes had mud/swampy areas on them though we didn't have recent rain. the greens were extremely sandy. there was an extremely slow 4some 3 or 4 groups ahead of us but no marshals around for the whole round.
That having been said, I was still able to play and had a good time. I wouldn't play this course again at full price, but at $16 with a cart I may go again.
Fun Course
My father-in-law and I had a great time playing this course. The greens were in excellent shape, fairways were still recovering from the heavy winter/spring rains but overall course in pretty good shape. The front nine is tight and rewarded with accuracy. The back nine opens up with some great holes to bring your score down. Had a great time and would certainly come and play again.
An old favorite
It had been over a decade since I last played this course, moving, retirement etc. all interfered with that.
I was reminded of the course while a playing partner and I tried to find a new challenge
Despite the course having been actually under water very recently it was rough but playable, the greens being fine, the fairways mostly so but rough in spots. I expect that, in a short time, it will all be fine again.
The two nines are markedly different, the front being tougher and narrow, the back ,wending through a deer filled canyon, lush and very pretty. I loved this course long ago and now have renewed that with my recent play here.
Last thing, do not fail to order the Tomato Basil soup in the restaurant, it is simply ambrosia! The ample menu is am=n added touch and what we ate was delicious.
Christmas Eve Round
Played the course Christmas eve 2016. Had a 10:06AM tee time and showed up about an hour early. Course was completely empty and wasn't going to be open until 9:45AM due to frost. Ended up being first out and the front 9 was completely empty which was great. A few of the holes had not been hit by the sun so it was still some frost on it.
Once we hit the back 9 we saw the first groups around but it was not busy at all. Fun round overall. No carts for the day so we ended up walking.
Pros:
- Straightforward and relatively forgiving golf course
- The drier sections of the course were in great condition
Cons:
- Driving range is into water so you don't know exactly where the ball is landing
- Some greens are quick and some are slow. Not even throughout the round
Day on the Green
Played 18 holes at Redwood Canyon. Picked up a tee time at the last minute. It turned out to be a great outing. The course was a little muddy from the recent rains (which we desperately needed) but the pace was fast and the overall condition was good. Thoroughly enjoyed my 3 1/2 hours of play!!!
A day to relax
always enjoy course some hazzards on right that make play somewhat a challenge
This course good lay out.
This course can use more grooming on the green and around it.
Very interesting
My son and I found the course to be fairly narrow in most places. The greens very very difficult as the grass would cause the ball to move in different directions, not influenced by the slope. The grounds keepers were watering the greens just before we reached some of the holes so the pace of our puts was not consistent and gave us a lot of 3 puts. Very friendly staff and I would recommend this course to friends. We will go back again.
Pick up
Great place to meet new people to play a round of golf during the weekday
Redwood Canyon
Touchstone is making great strides in making this a course that locals and visitors would love to play. Beautiful setting.
Friday off
I injoy playing at this course price in good
Avoid
I hate to write this, the course is fun but if you pay more than $20 you overpaid. Sorry but on the rare occasion I hit the fairway I dont want to hit out of huge patches of crab grass or even worse dirt/sand. Only a few holes had actual sand in the bunkers, the greens were in bad shape, the entire course could've been ground under repair. And to make matters worse I paid $50 playing on a holiday weekend.
Good price, bad condition
Course was beat up, greens were beat up.
Hidden Gem
the !st hole tests your medal.. San leandro creek zig zags through the course, and always a threat. Fun and challenging course.
Always enjoyable but...
Course is always enjoyable but this time there were two negatives
1- Person at check in was not friendly at all, almost hostile. I wonder if it was because we were using the hot deals at Golf Now.
2- Cart we were given had no full charge. We never would have made it up to the top of the 4th hole so we had to turn around and go back to exchange carts. Almost didn't make it back. We had to start all over again since we couldn't simple cut in line on the 4th hole. Obviously poor equipment maintenance.
In addition the 2nd hole has had water in the middle of the fairway this whole season. There was a maintenance person working the area both times we went by. Don't hit the ball in the middle of the fairway, it will stop in a puddle. Equally bad maintenance issues on the 15th hole.
No marshal at all to help out with the dead cart. The golfer we played with didn't even know there were marshals although we have seen them maybe 1 time in 10 that we play.
relaxing scenery
Great cool weather plus good scenery. Friendly staff is a plus too. They have new ball washers and water fountains. Some of the fairway have no grass and it's just dirt. There were a couple of spots on the fairway that were soggy. Overall this is an okay place to play golf with family or your buddies.
Good local track.
So this place has recently gone under a little facelift. The course still gets a little crowded, and the greens/fairways/tee boxes aren't the best. But the wildlife and scenery here make up for it. If you are a pampered golfer who only plays the best courses then stay away. But if you are an average joe who likes to hack it up this is the place for you.
