Country roads can take you home, but they can also lead to some pretty special golf courses in West Virginia.

The epicenter of golf in West Virginia would be White Sulphur Springs and The Greenbrier, but there are other hubs of wonderful mountain golf.

GolfPass releases a Top 10 Public Golf Courses in West Virginia every March thanks to YOU. We create our annual Golfers' Choice lists by curating the reviews submitted by everyday golfers. We use GolfPass' Ratings Index logic that weights newer reviews and combine it with a course's subcategory averages.

Each course needed at least one review and at least some public access to qualify.
The Arnold Palmer Signature Course At Stonewall Resort didn't have consistent enough reviews, conditioning-wise, to make our top 10. Private clubs like Pikewood National Golf Club and the Pete Dye Golf Club weren't eligible.

We make our Golfers' Choice best-of lists user friendly. Simply click on the photo of each course to learn more about the facility or to book a tee time (in most cases).

    Public/Resort
    4.8337864558
    167

    Green fee: $55-$75
What they're saying: "This is a mountain golf course so when traveling to it, I recommend you have written directions as the GPS signal can be lost. That having been said, it is well worth the drive. I was fortunate to play on a perfect fall day when the colors were in full brilliance. The course was in excellent condition on tees, fairways and greens. Because it is a mountain course, the ball takes a lot of big bounces to the left or right on some holes and the stances for many shots can be uneven. The greens are very tricky to read and to judge the speed. In spite of all of the aspects mentioned, the golf course was fair, challenging and fun to play for an experienced golfer, but too difficult for a beginner." - panargis

  7. Canaan Valley Resorts Golf Course

What they're saying: "Kudos to the starter/ranger who did a fantastic job of asking the slower groups to let the twosomes through. We played 2 consecutive days in under 3 hours. A fantastic experience." - alanbarton2

  8. Lewisburg Elks Country Club

    Lewisburg, West Virginia
    Public
    4.5697945845
    47

    Green fee: $40-$52
What they're saying: "Prepare to give a moment of careful thought before making each shot. The greens and fairways are good and well maintained. However, there are a number of obstacles that need to be considered. Although Lewisburg Elks course is quite short —- if I remember correctly, only about 5,500 yards - dips and curves and hills and valleys present opportunities to test your skill at shot planning and execution. I am a 12 handicap for my local course, but I was happy to score a 96 during my first round. But, as someone who just loves a reasonable challenge, I went back two days later and brought in an 89. So, as I became familiar with the course, I eliminated some of the mistakes I had made on the first try. I can’t wait to get back there. Too bad Lewisburg is 3 hours’ drive away from my home." - GolfPass Reviewer

  9. Riverside Golf Club

    Mason, West Virginia
    Semi-Private
    4.404450895
    178

    Green fee: $33-$53
What they're saying: "Course was nice. Really good condition for as dry it has been. (It was) better than all other courses we’ve played this year. Will come back and play again." - Aderon08

  10. Cacapon State Park Resort

    Berkeley Springs, West Virginia
    Resort/Municipal
    4.4899611712
    107

    Green fee: $45-$50
What they're saying: "Wow, I played on a warm (but windy) November day, and was highly impressed by this course. Conditions were amazing. And the course has some nice challenges (fairways that roll left or right, elevation changes just to name a few). Greens were receptive but fast. They also rolled accurate and consistent. The course is out there a ways, but worth the drive if you ask me. I can't wait to go play again in season and see how it is." - StevePhil73
