The Legends Golf Course at Parris Island
About
The Legends at Parris Island offers a unique golfing experience and a challenging layout, amid a beautiful setting. Near Atlantic coast beaches and surrounded by beautiful marsh views, Parris Island is situated on a park-like military base where Marines are trained and equipped for U.S. military service positions all over the world. Golfers must have a tee time in order to come aboard Parris Island.
The golf course truly is a legend, having been rated as one of the top 10 military golf courses in the world. Yet it is little known by the outside world, tucked away from crowds, and a place of peaceful solitude.
The 18-hole golf course is lined with live oaks draped in Spanish moss. It features 6,898 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 73.3, and it has a slope rating of 131. Designed by Fred Findley and George Cobb, the Legends opened in 1947. Clyde Johnston redesigned it in 2000.

Watch for the alligators
The course was really soggy. Surprised that it wasn't cart path only. Weather was great. Very nice course. Played long, as I have found most of the Hilton Head courses to play. The greens were nice, but small.
Best public course in Beaufort
I love playing at this course. It was soggy from all the rain we have had recently, but otherwise the course is very well maintained. It is very scenic, with lots of birds and the occasional gator. There are no boring holes on this course. It requires you to think your way around. Good bunkering and lots of water in play. The greens are excellent, and fast when dry.
Wow...what a nice comment! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at The Legends. We are starting to dry out and will soon be back to our usual firm and fast conditions.
Great value and wonderful course
This is a great course for both men and women. The greens are the fastest I have ever played on. About 8 foursomes on the course which allowed play in just over 4 hours. NOTE: Canadians should become a "Friend of Parris Island" (fill out forms and follow the procedures) so that you are not held up at the Marine Corp gate. Just wish that there were more spots available for "non military" at reasonable prices.
That is a great note you posted about the "Friends of Parris Island" gate pass. All civilians are welcome to complete this form, which can be found on our website: www.thelegendspi.com. Thank you for playing our course and taking the time to share your experience!
Golfforfun
Course is in great condition the greens are fast and the course has a great lay out love to play here!
Thank you for your nice comments...we're happy you enjoy playing The Legends!
worth the 45 minute ride from HHI
Nice little track...good test from blues. Greens smooth and fairly quick. Lawn mowers get in way...crew has no respect for golfers...Best to sit tight and wait till they are done.
I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed playing The Legends GC but I'm concerned about your comments regarding our maintenance workers. I spoke with our Superintendent and showed him your post. He conducted a meeting with the staff and has assured me that the incident will not happen again. Ordinarily, our crew has a reputation of being very respectful but it is obvious that you experienced something otherwise. I hope you will give us another try sometime!
Great Conditions/value
I played during the week to get some practice for my weekend round. Went out alone with cart in early afternoon. I basically had the course to myself. Twosome I caught let me play through. Course was a bit soggy from storms the previous day, but in great shape. Sand traps not raked out which has been common in this area. I played from the blues which had plenty of distance but generous landing areas. Greens in wonderful shape and while not fast, rolled smoothly and true. I thoroughly enjoyed playing, especially for the price.
Thank you for playing The Legends at Parris Island and we really appreciate your kind words! The heavy rains we've been experiencing have certainly been a challenge to the course conditions, including green speeds and bunkers. But the course does drain well and we've been able to repair the bunkers and speed up the greens now that we've had a brief reprieve. I hope that you'll have another opportunity to play the course with drier conditions!
Enjoyed it!
I really enjoyed playing the course it was a good play with nice greens. The only complaint is that there was nowhere to get refreshments after two o'clock if you didn't have cash for the vending machines. Not a big deal next time we will have to remember our water bottles. On the same note having a igloo cooler at every other hole with cold was was a big plus!
Stunning landscape
The procedure to get on to the Military base took quite a while, but it was worth it. Due to heavy rain and thunderstorm we could not finish the round. But we would come back every time. All in all a wonderful experience.
Thank you for playing The Legends and for posting such a nice compliment about your round. I'm sorry you didn't get to finish playing and hopefully you requested a rain check in order to return. If not, please contact us and we'd be happy to assist!
Worth It!
Really well conditioned. Fun layout with some challenge. Big plus is no homes, traffic is non-existent and staff is friendly. This is a very well run operation. Plenty of wildlife to see as well.
Stay in bluffton
If you are looking to play some courses off the island, I would recommend Old South and Eagles Pointe before I would drive all the way to Parris Island. We got placed behind a 9 hole scramble group on the front 9 and it very slow. Course is nice but don't play if you can't book for under $30
I'm sorry to hear that your experience at The Legends was not what you expected. We do have outings from time to time and the one that you are referring to was a Farewell Party for a Marine who is being deployed. Most of the groups who were scheduled to tee off behind the outing started on the back nine and I am sorry that this was not the case for you. I hope that you will come back for another visit, without the interference of an outing!
Beautiful course
Had a wonderful time playing Ledgends. Greens are extremely fast but are in great condition and quite challenging. There are quite a few water hazards throughout the entire course which makes for another great challenge, especially if you're a left handed golfer like myself. Can't wait to go back again and play!
Good Time
Enjoyed the course. Sand traps were not in great shape but the rest of the course was in very good shape. Good value.
A real Gem.
They received three inches of rain the night before we played and it was Cat Path Only and extremely windy. Even from the White Markers it played real long and challenging.
A great Golf Course!
Good find
Fun to play good condition a little long to go there but the Time to go there is Nothing compare the joy to play
Pleasantly suprised!
After 7 years of living in Beaufort county I finally made it out to The Legends at Parris Island. Course is in pretty good shape and but the greens are great! Smooth and fast but also receptive. Definitely look forward to teeing it up again when I can.
Great course
i would highly recommend this course. Great layout and challenging. Course was in great shape. Everyone should play here.
Good times
The Legends was a challenging, fun course. My son and I were joined on the first tee by a local who offered us quite a few tips on how to play the course. Which was very helpful. Most of the holes are pretty straight forward, but there are a few that require knowing where not to be off the tee. Visually, the course is pleasing. Local wildlife -- alligators, birds, etc. -- is hard to miss. The view of the water from the 13th green is gorgeous.
Best course in Beaufort
I've been playing here since before the redesign like forever ago. I'm always looking to explore the area for a good golf course and have found many. But, I always find myself back at PI playing it over and over again because I absolutely love this course! It's a fairly easy course but does have many gator infested water hazards (which totally adds to the experience). You will also find it to hold a true southern feel to it, from the live oaks everywhere (check out behind hole #3) to the views of Port Royal Sound. You def need to check it out and hopefully the wind won't be on it.
Paris Island
Course was in good shape considering all the recent rain. There was quite a bit of noise from the Marine base (simulated war games) while we were playing.
GOOD TIME
KEEPING IT SIMPLE --- THE COURSE WAS GOOD FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. GREENS VERY GOOD.WHAT MADE IT A GREAT DAY WAS 4 GATORS & A EAGLE (NOT GOLFING EAGLE)
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. And you're right...even though our course has excellent drainage, the rain down here has been non-stop this Fall Season! Our superintendent is very liberal with the "cart path only" policy as we've found that most people don't like being restricted to the paths. I hope it didn't deter from your experience and that you will try us again now that we've completely dried out!
