Rating 73.3

The Legends at Parris Island offers a unique golfing experience and a challenging layout, amid a beautiful setting. Near Atlantic coast beaches and surrounded by beautiful marsh views, Parris Island is situated on a park-like military base where Marines are trained and equipped for U.S. military service positions all over the world. Golfers must have a tee time in order to come aboard Parris Island.

The golf course truly is a legend, having been rated as one of the top 10 military golf courses in the world. Yet it is little known by the outside world, tucked away from crowds, and a place of peaceful solitude.

The 18-hole golf course is lined with live oaks draped in Spanish moss. It features 6,898 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 73.3, and it has a slope rating of 131. Designed by Fred Findley and George Cobb, the Legends opened in 1947. Clyde Johnston redesigned it in 2000.

Overall nice course. For 5700 yards it played long. Greens rolled true. One trap I was in was in good shape. Will play again.

Salute the marines on your way to golf

Really fine course for all the public to play. Fairly wide open compared to Hilton Head but just as pretty. Drive right through the training base.

Location unusual

There are no houses, no out of bounds which is most unusual for American courses!

The greens had been sanded although this did not affect their speed or quality.

Enjoyed our day.

Always a solid course

This is by far one of the best courses in SC. Course is always in near pristine conditions. Recently, the greens have been better than ever and tee boxes and fairways have very few blemishes. Staff is always friendly and accommodating. Practice areas are worth the trip alone. Highly recommend this course

Awesome course!

In my opinion the best course in the area! Even with the greens being aerated, they still held, rolled true, and were in very good condition. I will be playing there more often.

Returned after a year and a half travels. Course was in better shape than I remember it. They have done a lot of clean up work on the whole course. Keep up the great work!!

Dissapointed

I’ve read all the reviews and I disagree completely that this is a great course. It’s fair at best. The only “good” thing about it was the greens. The hassle to get on base was amplified by the fact that our names “were not on the list” of golfers provided by the golf course. Our car was searched as if we were terrorists and we were kept in a trailer for 45 minutes waiting for an escort to the course - who never came. By the time we made it to the course, we had missed our tee time and were hustled to the first tee without a warm up. The pro shop was pretty rude about it all and our inquiry about former military duty rates. We were paired with a military member who gave the impression he was annoyed by us and rushed us through the round. The entire experience gave us the impression that everyone there was inconvenienced by us civilians. I’m not going back, especially when there are plenty of other and similarly priced options.

Hidden Low country Gem

The Legends course at Parris Island is one of the best layouts and best kept public courses in the low country. Smooth lush fairways and fast greens. The layout is challenging for all skill levels with some forced carries, wind exposed greens, and a lot of water. I always enjoy playing this course and with the hot deal of $14 through GolfNow it was a no-brainer.

Nice course, great value.

Course was in very nice condition. Pace of play was good, relatively fast. Greens in very good condition, rolled true, and a bit difficult to read.

Worth the drive

We played the Legends course on a hot day in June. Fortunately, the course had plenty of drinking water available. The layout is very good, with some straightforward holes and some with hazards coming into play. Our biggest complaint was the greens. They are Bermuda with a lot of exposed sand - causing graininess and bumpiness. But the course layout makes up for the greens. And the experience of playing on a USMC base was fantastic. Two fighter jets flew right over us on the fourth green - an awesome sight to see. The gentleman in the pro shop was extremely nice and very informative. It's worth the drive to play there.

Good layout

Mostly straight away, but quite a bit of lateral water. Watch out for the alligators! Note when making reservations that the Golfnow rate quoted will be the active military rate. (Course is at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.). John Q Citizen pays $55, but good value. Beer and range balls are more than reasonable. Don’t miss the target range silhouettes on the driving range. Semper Fi!!
