Oyster Bay Golf Links

About
Oyster Bay Golf Links, in Sunset Beach near Calabash, N.C., opened in 1983, a precursor to the Grand Strand's first true, golf course building boom.
Oyster Bay Golf Links, another classic creation by Developer Larry Young and Architect Dan Maples, is a rare blend of the various philosophies of golf course architecture.
Oyster Bay is one of the most beautiful and diversified courses to be found anywhere. It is located in Sunset Beach, NC just minutes North of its predecessor, Marsh Harbour.
"The real story is that Oyster Bay is still one of the must-plays of Myrtle Beach," a TravelGolf.com reviewer said. "The haunting layout on the shores of Twin Lakes has a collection of holes that are as well-conceived and scenery-soaked as any in the Grand Strand."
The par-70 course is just under 6,700 yards and has two island green par 3s. The course does show some signs of its age, including the clubhouse, the range with its beat-up ball machine, and the greens are old-fashioned Bermuda known for being slow.

Feeding time on the 15th hole! Photo submitted by JackStraw6 on 08/31/2017
A little worse for wear
Played here in the past and the course was in better shape. Greens were good and tees were ok but fairways were not in great shape, especially on the back 9. Don't know if it was too rainy or too sunny that month but it was not as nice as previous rounds. I still like the course and the challenges it provides, but felt a little let down.
Lots of water hazards (almost every hole and mostly to the right) and a gator sighting are to be expected. Two almost island greens and #13 & #16 are two of my favorite holes. Others are nicely laid out too.
Pace of play
Played the weekend and despite raising concerns with slow play from the groups ahead, nothing was done by the staff to remedy it. There were several twosomes which were not allowed to play through, which the staff declared as ‘up to the players not the golf course staff’. Unacceptable especially at the weekend. We walked off on 15 as there were at least 3 groups per hole in front of us and no sign of any staff monitoring or keeping play moving.
Disappointing.
Very poor job managing split tees. No rangers on the course. Will not be back.
Can see the design quality
The superintendent is putting his money into the greens and he is doing a great job. A few hundred thousand would bring some other design elements back. Bunkers need a redo, fairways were in good to great shape. Roughs were generally quite nice. Dan Maples did a nice job of incorporating challenge and beauty on both nines.
If you like to understand the designer’s approach there is plenty here. If you need immaculate conditions probably should look elsewhere. Again, congrats to the super.
A great value for the money
The Brunswick county area is littered with courses boasting about 20 year old awards. Oyster Bay is one of the few who still should. The staff is attentive and friendly and the course itself is well maintained. It presents enough challenges to make it enjoyable for all skill levels. Greens were consistent in their speed and condition, though as can be expected this time of year, there were a few burned spots.
Overall it is well worth the time and money
Nature Park
Beautiful views everywhere. Wildlife galore. Gators, osprey. Beautiful marshes. Challenging course. Greens recently punched and sanded but still rolled true. Heat was brutal. Middle of the day, Middle of July. Staff very friendly and helpful.Classic Carolina shores style course.
Good Course- Starter induced slow pace of play
This is a fun course with great scenic holes. This wont deter me from playing here again but the pace of play was bad and it was caused by the starter. While the group in front of us was on the first tee box, he was pressing us to drive up to the first hole (so we watched them tee off) and then told us to go as soon as they are clear. The problem is all the groups get on top of each other- we had multiple holes with 3 or 4 groups on it. Stick to the allotted time instead of rushing groups off.
Water & more water
Nice layout, interesting due to the water everywhere, only minute was, that Greens were aerified
Really liked the layout
Liked the layout and different looks
No ball washers
Poor direction markers from green to next tee
Course was dry
Course was dry. Sparse grass on tees and greens mowed improperly leaving brown areas and uneven grass height.
Over Priced
Over the years, I have played Oyster Bay. Extremely challenging course but with conditions of the course Saturday May 3, it played harder. The fairways were very poor with some type of mulch on top and the tee boxes were either burnt out or not taken care. The Greens were the only positive of the round. Might have to drop this one from our upcoming trips.
Underwhelming
It is a great layout, but I was very disappointed with the course conditions. I know it is early in the season, but some poor fairways. Bad lies throughout the 18, moreso on the back 9. Greens discolored, but putted well. It was cool to see multiple alligators!
Oyster Bay
Course needs some tender love and care. Cart paths are terrible, sand traps need some sand and work, most greens need improvement. Played in early spring (April 01).
