Holes 18

Length 6580 yards
Slope 131
Rating 72.1

Set across 300 acres of lush Carolina Lowcountry, Hilton Head National Golf Club has earned its reputation as one of the region’s premier public courses.

A unique collaboration between golf legends Gary Player and Bobby Weed, the course offers two distinct nines that complement each other beautifully. Weed designed the front nine with larger, more dramatically contoured greens to contrast and balance Player’s strategically crafted back nine.

Among the most memorable holes is the challenging par-4 sixth — bordered along its entire right side by the course’s largest lake and protected by deep pot bunkers near the green. The back nine features several standout holes, including the long and demanding 16th, which ranks as the No. 1 handicap hole for women and No. 5 for men. And finishing strong, the par-4 eighteenth tests precision with a deep marsh running the length of the narrow fairway.

Together, these elements create a course that’s scenic, strategic, and rewarding for players of all skill levels.

Hidden gem!

What a beautiful course! In excellent condition, challenging but fair. We enjoyed our round here very much, and would definitely play here again, and would recommend it to anyone visiting the area. Enjoyable for the low and mid range handicappers!

Great course with beautiful views but unputtable greens

This course was beautiful and the pace of play was good as well. The greens were cross cut which made it impossible to read and control the pace of the putt. They have to change the way they cut the greens to give golfers a chance to read and control pace of the putts. This will make the greens consistent and give average golfers a chance on these greens.

Great Day

Difficult when windy. Wind changes directions constantly. Course was in great condition after receiving a tremendous amount of rain 2 days earlier. Difficult greens. Only complaint, finally saw the cart lady after hole #14. Still enjoyed my day.

Excellent round

We were fortunate to use a $44 per person deal the day of play. My husband and I felt the course was extremely fair to the novice player, with wide fairways on every hole. The course was in excellent shape. The starter could have been in a better mood, but everyone else was friendly.

Fantastic golf

This is one of my favorite golf courses. Bad shots are penalized and good shots rewarded. Always treated nice here. It's in the boonies, so you don't hear a bunch of noise or worry about hitting into someone's house or back yard.

Challenging layout

Eye pleasing routing with equal # of r-l & l-r doglegs. Bunkers frame shots nicely. Greens smooth and fair. Landing areas generous if right lines are picked. Staff friendly and accommodating. Practice range adequate but no chipping/pitching area. Restaurant outstanding as was service. A great early morning outing and intro to Hilton Head golf.

Driving is closed for mowing?

HH National is easily our favorite course in the area. We've played it numerous times. But our last occasion left us scratching our heads. We had flown in from TX the morning of 4/1 then headed to HH National for an afternoon 18. Paid our green fees then asked for a couple of buckets of range balls. "Sorry, our range is closed,..they're mowing,..it won't be open for over an hour,..but you can tee off now,"

You have to be kidding,..they're mowing the driving range in the middle of scheduled tee times?

"No, we need to warm up,..we just got of the plane, spent a lot of money to get there, paid a lot for green fees and want to play well, which means we need to hit a few balls on the range to warm up" we said.

Sterling in the pro-shop was irritated that we chose to wait instead of get on (and off, I'm sure) the course. Here's an idea that works on every other course; mow later in the day after the last tee time is scheduled. Here's another idea. Don't let the greens-keeper run the golf course and it's scheduling.

So over the years, we noticed some subtle signs that the facility is not as well managed as prior years. I hope our experience was an anomaly but who knows.

Good greens

The day I played it was very windy +\- 20 mph gusts. This really tightened up the fairways. The greens rolled well and I was really impressed with the all of the green complexes in general. I payed $50 for an afternoon round which I was okay with and would do so
Again. As for the normal rate of $80 or so, I don't know that I would cough it up. Overall I enjoyed the round, but nothing made me go "Wow!".

Still Good

This is one of the better places to play in the area. A nice design without too much trouble. Normally this is one of the better maintained courses. The winter was a colder than normal so the course isn't as good as it has been in the past. Still a great value

Excellent Course.Excellent Value

I would recommend this course to anyone. Great course, reasonable prices, and the staff was fantastic. There might be better courses on the island, but I can't imagine they are that much better especially given the price.

nice course but slow round

This is a very nicely prepared course that has water but not too much in play. Only downside was the 4.75 hour pace. Would play again if I wasn't playing as many courses as possible on my fist visit here.

A nice treat at the National.

Golfers of all skill levels can enjoy this course. The conditions are excellent at all times, and Gary Plater shows that he knows how to lay out a good track. There are lots of great looking golf holes to enjoy both before and after they are played.

Fairly easy course

Surprised at how little water came into play, the course is wide open with sand traps as the main obstacle.. Sand is really good, very consistent and a pleasure to play from (frequently).

White tee blocks are way forward, there were 9 par 4s around 350 yards or less.

Fairways and greens were in really good condition.

Staff were all very friendly and efficient

We got a great price through golfnow, which made the game an absolute bargain.
