Rating 74.3

Grand Canyon University Golf Course (formerly known as Maryvale Municipal Golf Course) offers an 18-hole track designed by Ted Robinson, Sr. and built in 1961. The par-71 golf course measures 7,269 yards from the championship tees and is open year-round.

The Bermuda grass Grand Canyon University Golf Course gets plenty of shade during the summer, thanks to several onsite trees, and features flat and wide fairways.

The fourth hole, for one example, is a 160-yard par-3 where you'll have to shoot over the water - and past the brick wall that separates the green from the water.

Like playing this course

I always like playing this course. One needs to be a fairly good bunker player as you will find yourself in them. Course is challenging and geens have subtle breaks. The day I played there was a frost delay so pace of play was a little slow.

Problems

Me and my brother in law played on Sunday and I have been to GCU a few times before but the pace of play on the back 9 was absolutely terrible. The foursome behind us hit into our foursome 3 times before we finally said something and the ranger was just a young kid. I get this is a college course but there needs to be some better management or something because for 100 dollars I have to say was quite disappointed fairways were in good condition but everything else was poor. Plus on like 5 holes they have wood chips instead of rough. Is that a normal thing? Overall have to say was not worth the money. I play Palmbrook all the time and it’s always in good shape with respectful people for almost half the price with GPS and range balls included. Will not be going back anytime soon.

Very challenging but fun

Many deep bunkers guarding the greens make this course fun to play. A bogey is success.

Great as Always

This course is really consistent as you would expect with a course that hosts a college golf program. Pace of play was right around 4:45 which would usually be slow but for a Saturday in December in AZ was fine. It didn’t feel slow, just realized the time at the end. Course was a little more wet than usual and had a couple of balls plug on high wedge shots but that was the only thing that wasn’t as good as it usually is. Worth the money and you always know it’s gonna be a good round.

Yearly golf trip

Every year a group of friends come down to play for a week and we hit GCU for a round. We absolutely love the bunkers! The only issue we had was there was zero sand/seed anywhere to fix divots. Empty in the carts and nothing on the tee boxes. Taylor the cart girl definitely keeps you hydrated on the course and we’ll definitely be back next year to see her

Bunkers

Heavily bunkered with next to zero sand in bunkers makes it a tough slog and impossible to score.

Worth playing

Always enjoy playing GCU course. I believe it's the best value for your money around Phoenix. Althouth they had 18 tough pins( greens keeper had a bone to contend) the course played fairly and had all the maintenance up to date. OVERSEED HAS TAKEN WELL and the greens putted well.
