Editor's Note: Course closed for business in Apr 2018.
Villa de Paz Golf Course was voted the top affordable 18-hole course in the Valley of the Sun, according to the Arizona Republic. The parkland course challenges top golfers, though it's not so difficult that beginners will wish they'd golfed elsewhere. After a 2002 remodel, the par-71 course measures 6,700 yards and offers water on 10 holes. If Phoenix in summertime intimidates, fear not: at Villa de Paz Golf Course, shade abounds, due to mature trees lining several fairways. Shoot for birdies or eagles, do so, but wisely. Reward has risk. Shooting sharply is especially required on holes like the fourth, a par-4 450-yarder with a severe right dogleg. Hitters dig the seventh, eighth and 15th, par 4s that can be nailed from the tee. The 18th mixes distance and skill. The par-4 470-yarder doglegs right and requires a carry over a lake to reach the three-tiered green. Fancy a warm-up before the Villa de Paz Golf Course? Use the handy practice area, with its range, two-tiered hitting zones and highlighted target areas at different yardages so you can check your length -- and the wind.

Short and narrow...
The Villas been around as long as I have been playing...
Several owners and conditions have ranged from surprisingly good to trash...
Current owners are trying to maintain like everyone else.
Price is low so there is a lot of play and conditions reflect that.
Course layout is short and narrow... If you can hit a 5 iron straight all you need is a putter besides.
Back tees are on the absurd side, kind of like they stuck them where they could with no consideration for continuity or flow... 9 and 18 are prime examples... the latter of which will leave you scratching your head.
Years ago when people still read newspapers, Arizona Republic ran a feature every year in the sports section called, The best 18 in Phoenix, where they identified a hole from different courses they felt warranted that praise. Oddly enough 18 was listed on several occasions, and probably rightly so, given the times and the layour back then.
So there are a dozen plus easy, straightforward short holes, a couple with a bit of a twist and another couple that will require an above average effort (16 and 18 specifically).
Anyways, I like the course, have to admit I lived nearby for several years and convenience and cameraderie were certainly factors.
Golf's cheap, food and drink are decent and resonable... Not a 'must play' by any stretch, but pleasant and relaxing, if you are into that sort of thing.
Great Value
Good layout and a fun course to play. The greens and bunkers were very nice! Staff was excellent, great customer service skills. Definetly will recomend and certainly play again.
Needs some work.
Needs some work but a nice layout, i would play here much more.
Budget course
Golfing in the winter can get expensive in the Phoenix area. At first, Villa de Paz was like a breath of fresh air. What you get for what you pay is actually a pretty darn good deal. But that isn't a whole heck of a lot.
The greens tend to be in pretty good shape, but that's about the extent of it. There are large sections of the course that are just plain dirt, and I don't think it was intended to be a desert type lie, either. The signature hole here is definitely hole number 4. It is a very short par 5, but it's also one of the hardest holes I've ever played. You have a narrow driving area to a 90 degree dogleg right. Then you go over water to get to a green where, if you miss right, there is no telling what your ball is going to be sitting in.
Hole number two has a ridiculous tee box with no grass. The green had tire marks across it as well. Now this is the worst hole on the course as far as upkeep goes, but it's one of the worst I've ever seen.
The other thing you have to look out for here is the dogs owned by the residents. I have, on more than one occasion, invoked the rule where I am allowed a free club length to drop out of range of vicious dogs that seem intent on reaching over their fences and grabbing a hold of my shirt.
Great course for the price
My wife and I played this course a few days ago. It was a great price for the twilight rates. The course plays pretty simple. Keep the ball straight, hit a decent approach shot and you'll play a good game. Not too challenging if you hit the ball alright most of the time.
I would recommend this course for the twilight rates. It's only a good deal at less than <20. Needs a little TLC. Pro shop looks nice and decent carts. Staff was friendly all around.
i like this course
this course is fun and challaging.i have pretty much made this my home course.it is close to my resident and the prices are good
big value for average challenge.
The value of this course is in it's price. The t boxes, greens and bunkers all require work.
good layout format
although it is a little rough looking, esspecially around the edges, I would loved to have seen it in the early years, it looks as though it was a real pretty course, before the demagraphic of the neighbour hood changed. The fairways are OK not great but OK, the greens are in good shape with some moderate unqulations, sand traps are again OK, I have always enjoyed the format and layout of the course, I always like lots of lakes. The course is valued right, and is great to play.
what an awesome value.
Talk about a great value. Mature course with huge trees lineing the fairways, plenty of shade. Conviently located between I-10 and the 101. Did I mention my 30$ round came with lunch. Can't beat it.
Enjoyed the course
17 of 18 greens in good condition, not a long course, but must stay in fairway, trouble left and right on many holes. Many water hazards.
Course has great fairway & greens. Fun course.
First timer at course & verry happy with golf course & staff. plan on returning A S A P. TEE UP PEOPLE.
This course is ok but the staff and slow pace of play is bad.
The course layout is fair being fairly straight up but the course was unkept and difficult to find your ball even though it is in play. The staff not very friendly and nobody regulating the pace of play. It was nice to hit the ball around but this course is not a great place to do so.
Crowded
The course tries to cram as many tee times possible and it creates traffic. It would've been fine if the marshals were proactive.
Challenging
Greens are rough. No one repairs ball marks. Some tee boxes need attention. coarse is challenging
good value-nothing fancy
Course has nice variety of hole designs. Grass is thin in the fairways. Greens role nice.
Don't expect resort experience as fairway homes are full of barking dogs, trash, laundry hanging on the fences and bed sheet patio curtains. Watch your clubs when near city streets. Someone had their bags stolen by a speeding truck. Cart paths and parking lot haven't been tended to in years-potholes.
Resort wear not required. Won't see the 1% here. Staff and playing partners friendly and laid back. $15 in Dec. is a steal.
I have already booked another T-time !
VERY FRIENDLY STAFF and a coarse that offers GREAT VALUE !!!!!
I will continue too play here when I can, and I have already booked another T-time.
This year.. course is looking better than last year at this time.
I have played this course for nearly 10 years now. It has had its ups and downs. This year.. seems like it is one of the up years. Thank you to all that own it.. maintain it.. We will be golfing it a lot more this winter 2012...
Open Fairways, winding holes, and some great staff!
I have played this course 3 times and I enjoy every round that I have played. The staff is awesome and the course is well enough maintaned. the surrounding areas left something to be desired but overall I tend to focus on the course and the course it good. Lots of doglegs and some interesting approach shots on many holes make this course different, every time I played.
