About
Nestled at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Toiyabe Golf Club (formerly known as Thunder Canyon Country Club and Lightning "W" Ranch Golf Course.) has a picturesque landscape of shimmering lakes, meandering streams, and towering pines. This course has a traditional layout that features contoured fairways and fast, generous greens. There are nearly 50 bunkers strategically placed throughout and water comes into play on 14 holes. Elevated tees provide spectacular views of Mt. Rose and Slide Mountain. The golf course is challenging but still player-friendly with seven sets of tees. In addition to the course, Toiyabe Golf Club also offers practice facilities that include chipping and sand practice areas along with an expansive putting green.

Great course super staff
Always love playing this course. Great layout very challenging depending on the teas you pick. Staff is great Chris and Mike do a great job
Excellent Course!
Fantastic course for the $$$. Quality course with rough, fairways, smooth greens. Military friendly. Great staff. Helpful and friendly. Resort style course without the high resort fees. If you get the chance, play it!
Pace of play is simply despicable
3 instances of frost delays causing 9 holes to take over 3 hours worst pace of play in reno
Gorgeous course
A good course set against the spectacular Sierra Nevada range in Washoe Valley. It is in good condition given the harsh winter we are coming out of and plays well from any tee. Winds are tricky but the views from the pines on the back nine are wonderful. I always enjoy Toiyabe, even when my game goes south!
Spring at Toiyabe
Course was in pretty good shape for early Spring. Sand traps need some attention. Staff was great!! For the people that don't have yardage scopes, I wish the course would put some white stakes, just one per hole, along each hole to indicate where 150 grads out is. Very inexpensive and everyone in our group agreed.

Disappointed
First time playing courses in Reno area. This course received decent reviews on golf now, probably because they are locals with knowledge of the low quality golf in Reno/ Carson area.
The good: Greens in good shape and the layout was great !!
I call courses like this cow pastures. It's a rural track which lacked care.
The views of the mountains were beautiful- helped distract from the courses poor quality.
Toiyabe
Have played the course many times. Yesterday, however, turned out to be a horrible weather day with cold heavy winds and it ruined the experience. It was too late to cancel since we were already there. Had to quit after Hole 12.
Decent winter golf
I played on a warmer day in January, the conditions are what you would expect at that time of year -- a lot of frozen ground. One of the guys I was paired with had an awl for the tee boxes -- that helped! There were 2 temporary greens where the regular greens had snow on them. Overall a great course, not too hard for a beginner/intermediate golfer but still challenging enough for an experienced golfer. Great views too!
