Firecliff at Desert Willow Golf Resort
About
A lot of courses say they're all about nature. Desert Willow Firecliff Resort in Cathedral City actually lives it. Natural desert plants are the star of the show here. So much so that the course was featured on the front cover of Smithsonian magazine.
Bobcats, coyotes and desert rabbits have free run of the place, adding another dimension to any round. When you see a bobcat out in the distance of the desert brush, you're not chasing after that golf ball. No matter how much cash you plunked down for the latest in long-distance technology.
Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry designed Desert Willow and it offers a good example of how you become a rising name in the golf architect game. The sand sculpting demands attention from the first hole.
The course looks intimidating to play. With a 138 slope rating, it plays that way too.

Getting warmer in the desert
Very nice course and facility. The day I played it was close to 115 degrees. Ouch! Course in very good shape and layout is definitely one of the better ones in the desert. I highly recommend it. This is the right time of year too. Cheaper prices and the course is still in decent condition before summer beats it up.
Pleasantly surprised!
Would golf this course in a heart beat again. Staff accommodating, grounds well maintained. Only flaw was wet bunkers
Love it
I had a great time playing firecliff. Course was perfect. This course would be $100 a round in Minnesota. Paid $50. Wow. Temp was 84 when I started at 1130 at the end it was 95. Perfect. If you play this course and are from out of town, go memorial day week. It was dead.
Great Course
Great course, perfect conditions fairways and greens. Greens actually a bit slow for me, but that is my problem. Great setup, many bunkers which penalizes when off track, but rewards when on.
FIRECLIFF
VERY GOOD CONDITIONS OVERALL
GREENS DID NOT LOOK THAT GREAT BUT ROLLED TRUE
LOTS OF BUNKERS
CLUBHOUSE AND OTHER FACILITIES ARE GREAT
PLAYED WITH A LOCAL WHICH HELPED
Favorite Course in Desert Area
What a fantastic course, played at 2:00 for $33 (that's not a typo!).
We've enjoyed all the sight lines off the tee. Numerous bunkers in play off the tees and on approach but it's a very fair course. The fairways are very wide and generous. Greens are well protected and rolling smooth. No gimmick holes, silly mounded fairways or blind tee or approach shots. Holes 9 and 18 are beautiful finishing holes with water and the club house.
For us it's a must play course.
This course was heads Above the other courses we played during our trip. Here is the order of ranking and conditions (none had been air rated and all green fees were beyond cheap).
1. Firecliff
2. Shadow Ridge
3. Indian Wells - The Players
4. Silver Rock
5. PGA West - Players Stadium (horrific - if you want a Dye course stick to Casa de Campo Teeth of the Dog).
Didn't get to play Mission Hills due to airification nor did we play the Classic as it didn't have reduced summer rates are the others were so dam cheap. That's why another trip us required.
Everything you want in a course
Fire cliff had the best View,, beauty, challenging. The course was getting ready for reseeding so it wasn't at its best but it was really good.
Nice Course
Course was in great shape and staff very cordial. Always a joy to play. Play it in the fairway and it's a pretty easy ride. Spray the ball and you'll find one of the many bunkers or even desert. When we've played here before, pace hasn't been an issue but when we played on 10/6, pace was right at 5 hours. There were not gaps ahead of us that we could tell so everyone was pretty much slow. Only on 1 hole did we have to wait for several groups to tee off...the rest of the time, we were pulling up to the tee as the group ahead was leaving the tee.
True desert classic
Simply put..... Fabulous ! Great golf all around and be sure to eat at the resteraunt after your round.
Lovely course with great amenities
The entire facility was extraordinary. One of the best stocked pro-shops around.
Tougher than it looks
From the tees, this course looks both beautiful and pretty easy.
The desert landscaping is stunning (though I wonder how much of the plant life is native) and the color combinations/contrasts really please the eye.
With few exceptions, the holes look pretty easy from the tee. The fairways are very wide (in some cases 60 or 80 yards) and the greens are quite large. So why did I score so poorly? First, the many bunkers seemed to gobble up every shot that was not spot on. Second, nearly all the greens have severe undulations that toss off some approach shots and cause you to almost never have a straight and level putt. Third, the course tempts you in some cases to bite off more than you can chew in terms of picking a line for your drive; wide fairways don't help if you try and fail to carry over some desert in order to get a shorter second shot.
I look forward to playing the Firecliff Course again. It was a fun course to play, a great chance to enjoy the desert, and a challenge.
May be best in entire area
This is desert golf at it's best...... I have player most high end courses in the valley and feel this is in the top 2 or 3...... tons of traps and every hole is memorable... can't wait to play it again
Beautiful course
Desert Willow Firecliff is a beautiful course, hard to believe that is a municipal course and not a private club. It is challenging from the back tees and the forward tees provide a good experience for the higher handicap golfer.
Fabulous desert curse
Far and away my favorite desert course, with an abundance of challenges, but with good course management the rewards are worth an occasional risk. Bunkers dot the fairways and protect the greens, so accuracy must be in your bag. Firecliff is one of the prettiest courses in the area, well maintained and the restaurant/bar offer a great opportunity to take in the beauty of the place. Your ball striking skills will be tested, but the smart golfer will be rewarded by good decisions. I will play this course every time we visit the area.
We liked the fact that the course still had lots of natural terrain
We had a great round of golf, played the round in 4 1/2 hours because we were almost the last twosome of the day & took our time to enjoy the scenery & smell the roses so to speak, We did let the few singles play through. The course was in great shape & for a 20 Handicapper most enjoyable from the white Tee's.
Good layout, rough conditions
I played when they were preparing for over-seeding(wasn't mentioned when I made my time online) and the course was brown and rough. Greens were OK but didn't see this courses best face. Good layout with some nice views of the area. May try it again but not the best first impression.
Extrememly Accomodating / Beautiful Courses
We played on one of those rare desert days when the rain actually can chase you off the course / The Pro Shop staff was extremely accommodating in getting us back out 48 hours later on a beautiful desert day........Unfortunately, my game didn't improve over that time frame !!!!
Good, not Great
Firecliff was on a must play list in many places so decided to give it a try. It was priced in line with other top tier publics for the low season and was not on par. The greens were shaggy and did not play nearly as well as Classic or Indian Wells. Course was in average condition but did offer some nice views and a decent challenge. Would recommend Silverorck, Classic Course, La Quinta or Indian Wells over Firecliff any day.
Always A Challenge
Greens are in great shape and the course is moving along quite well. I usually give this course the highest rating however there are many rough areas on many of the fairways form either the heat or some disease and that is why my rating is not the highest.
Still a great value for the money and plays very fast.
